Volume Five of the GURDONIAN — 1963 Gurdon High School Gurdon, Arkansas With our school days come to their close, we pause to look back upon the friends and the happiness we have had. Our last year has been one filled with many experiences which we shall never forget. The joys, the sor- rows, the fun, and the hard work - these are all parts of our memories. In the 1963 GURDON1AN we have tried to preserve for you through pictures these wonderful memories of Gurdon High School. TABLE OF CONTENTS CLASSES ATHLETICS ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVITIES ADVERTISERS ATHLETICS ORGANIZATIONS MEMORIES BACK ROW: Juniors, Lauren Cox, Rodney Scott, Wendell Plyler, Becky Franklin. THE 1963 GURDONIAN STAFF Staff examines pictures to see which ones will be best for the annual. Cropping pictures so they will look as good as pos- sible on the page. . . . AND NERVE-RACKING DEADLINES TIME FOR THANKS And so, in a too limited vocabulary and too small a space, we wish to thank those who have helped make this annual possible. We wish to thank the staff for spending many after-school hours working. We wish to thank the faculty for the co-operation, and for allowing students to miss class for picture making. We especially wish to thank Mrs. Slay- ton for assisting us in publishing this annual. Checking copies and preparing for shipment. Through thick and thin the annual staff worked to provide you with the best they could do. THE GURDONIAN DEDICATES Why do we dedicate THE GURDONIAN to you? BECAUSE you have labored for 17 years with courage and de- votion for the best interests of the school. BECAUSE you have given unself- ishly of your time, effort, and yourself whenever you were needed. Mr. S. K. Garrett we dedicate THE 1963GURDONIAN to you! ADMINISTRATION MR. ED SHERMAN Principal Mr. Sherman received his B. A. from Henderson State Teachers College and his M.E. from East State Teachers College. He is a true friend to the student body of GHS. Mr. Sherman is always ready to help the students of GHS with all problems in any way he can. MRS. T. W. BRATTON Secretary Mrs. Bratton is secretary of the Gurdon Schools. She has a long line of re- sponsibilities which she must fulfill. She must keep all records up-to-date at all times, answer the constantly ringing telephone, take up lunch money, and keep records of incoming and outgoing money. SCHOOL BOARD New teachers, projects, advice and activities are the business of the School Board. As the body with final authority they sacrificed their time and talents to make our school a better one. Friends, guides, assistants, all these men on the board who became an essential part of each student's life, gave freely of their time and effort without receiving pay, to serve the youth of Gurdon. Our team and the student body have had enthusiastic spirit throughout the year. The Band, Cheerleaders, and Pep Club added greatly to the experience of those wonderful times - the Pep Meetings. Our football team, with their Homecoming victory, made this year a more exciting one. Our Senior High coaching staff is made up of Coach Grady Cathy, who has been here for eight years, and Coach Bobby Smithson, who has been here three years. They have both done their best to give Gurdon a good football standing. SENIOR FOOTBALL LETTERMEN Football is not for the sunshine soldier. A good football player is not one who works hard only when the going is easy, and quits when everythings seems to go wrong. The one who fights hardest when the rain is cold, the stands are bare, and the odds are worst, is the real football player. These seniors were leaders during the season and thanks are due them for staying on the team throughout high school.
