Through everyoneis efforts, Gunn has built a repu- tation throughout the City and State, a reputation for excel- lence in academics, in sports and in the arts. Trophies line the shelves, overwhelming visi- tors who come to the building. Students load on to buses headed to represent the Gators throughout the area, matching skill and hard work, returning most times victorious, and sometimes having spent the time learning and growing from defeat. But even temporarily defeated, Gators return to find a student body still in total support, and it is this support and this spirit, that makes Gunn Gators Num- ber One. Each day in the halls, in the classrooms, after school, and on the weekend, Gunn stu- dents maintain a mental atti- tude that sets them apart. TEXAS 76015 The name HGunn Junior High Schoolu implies many things, but to me it is people meeting together in a building to teach and to learn self-discipline. Through self-discipline, we prepare ourselves for being totally involved in the privilege of the basic right to be responsible in every thing we do. Individual freedom, in all things, exists in degree in direct proportion to the degree in which a person makes himself be responsible in all things. Each of us, working in his own way to be responsible to all others, makes a life for himself which is unique in that it is not identical to any other. These individual differences create the need for group action in many things. Once again it has been a year of honest effort and genuine cooperation--generous in victory yet cheerful in defeat. Perhaps it has also been a year which has given each of us an opportunity to renew a pledge to guard our honor, to cherish zealously our friendships, to acknowledge quietly our errors, and to follow always the truth. On behalf of the entire student body, it's faculty and staff, as president of this year's student council, I hereby declare this Trey Shelton, Kevin Curnutt Day here at Floyd M. Gunn Jr. High. From the very start, he has worked tirelessly for the benefit of the school and its students. In his own words, he has enjoyed watching a student with a little help or encour- agement from me develop and grow. In that case, he must surely have derived a great deal of enjoyment over the years. During the 1980-81 year, as usual, Mitch has sponsored the annual. He has also helped to to sponsor the Student Council, the Art Club, the Rodeo Club and the Sunshine Committee. From spirit posters and dance decorations to the airplane-pulled banner proclaiming Gunn Number One at the ninth grade city championship footballgame, evidences of Mitch's caring have abounded. It is in appreciation of his ceaseless service to the Gunn students and in recognition of the sincere affection which moti- vates this service that the 1980-81 Gator Tracks is dedi- cated to Mitch Wilson. 5QM ,S ,il -A-1 91 il iv Af, Mitch Wilson In Memoriam and the winter turns to spring and the spring to summer and still, even as we go about our daily lives, our thoughts still return to one Sunday afternoon in January. And for a moment, our smiles will fade, and a sadness will creep into our hearts. On this Sunday afternoon events took place that would touch the lives of every student and parent at Gunn Jr. High and citi- zens throughout the city and state. We may never understand the reason things happen as they do, and why in one brief moment our friend was taken from us. For one day laughter filled the air, and the next would come no more. This loss was very hard for us - we feel it still! For this was not someone we read about. He was in our class, he was on our team, he was the boy next door. He laughed and talked with us, and shared our hopes and dreams. His memory will live on through us, for we all were touched by his loss. One day the pain and hurt will be gone, and when we remember, we will remember the good times and the happy moments - and we will live each day to the ful- lest, because we can not know what tomorrow will bring. We as members of the annual staff have also become a closely knit group - laughing and fighting, working and playing, but most of all learning that no one will do our job for us - it is our responsibility.
