i r 1 ,H Ili' 1-' F4 dk! kvE' if 35, IN MEMIJHIAM l1r. Hiuhard li. Cnx 1881 - 1957 Thursday, February 16, 1967, marked the day of the passing of Dr. Richard G. Cox, founder of our Gulf Park College. Early in the 1900's, this man of aspiration drove along the gulf coast and noticed an attractive woodland-perfect for a college. Thus, the dream of a pioneer in the junior college movement was established: Gulf Park College. Dr. Cox strove to make his school gracious, yet academically stimulating. He was the first president of any college or university to establish an annual Caribbean cruise. He instituted Gulf Park as an accredited junior college among the first to be so recognized by the Southern Association. His accomplishments were numerous outside of his administrative work at Gulf Park. He served as the President of the Southern Association of Junior Colleges, President of the Mississippi Association of Junior Colleges, President of the American Association of Junior Colleges, and was listed in Who's Who in America 1931-51. He was also one of America's first flying presidents. Through his skill and relish for flying, he conducted the college flight training program. Dr. Cox was a reserved, kind man, who had great ambition and capabilities. His influence greatly affected higher education in the United States and each person who came in contact with Gulf Park College. His life was long and full. His goals were reached. His influence lives on.
