She left memories of her fidelity to teaching, her zest for new ideas, and her good judgement with students, associates, and friends. As a teacher, Miss Schreiber brimmed with enthusiasm for the subjects she taught: English and Humanities. Her warm smile and insight for communication transferred class time from a lecture or discussion to an adventure with language and literature. Ruth Schreiber was always aware of the opportunities life had to offer. She used her full potential to be creative and to stimulate her students. Through her guidance and ferver, The Book was simulated and years of SEA GULL publications were perfected. Her compassion for humanity generated ' admiration, respect, and a willingness to work from the students. We remember Miss Schreiber as a mature woman, humorous, yet serious. She led a goodand accomplished life. Death will not diminish the memories she left. And so, the J A l X5 JSP F ll. RQ. Hiuhard li. Cnx 1881 - 1957 Thursday, February 16, 1967, marked the day of the passing of Dr. Richard G. Cox, founder of our Gulf Park College. Early in the 1900's, this man of aspiration drove along the gulf coast and noticed an attractive woodland-perfect for a college. Thus, the dream of a pioneer in the junior college movement was established: Gulf Park College. Dr. Cox strove to make his school gracious, yet academically stimulating. He was the first president of any college or university to establish an annual Caribbean cruise. He instituted Gulf Park as an accredited junior college among the first to be so recognized by the Southern Association. His accomplishments were numerous outside of his administrative work at Gulf Park. He served as the President of the Southern Association of Junior Colleges, President of the Mississippi Association of Junior Colleges, President of the American Association of Junior Colleges, and was listed in Who's Who in America 1931-51. He was also one of America's first flying presidents. Through his skill and relish for flying, he conducted the college flight training program. Dr. Cox was a reserved, kind man, who had great ambition and capabilities. His influence greatly affected higher education in the United States and each person who came in contact with Gulf Park College. His life was long and full. His goals were reached. His influence lives on. .E ,W-,'Z,.,. X 1 I Y w . As a father of three daughters and a son, Mr. Johnson is Well qualified to counsel the students of Gulf Park. Although his duties require a good deal of time, heris never too busy to discuss a problem with a student. When Dean Johnson is not working in his oflice he does not hesitate to enter into activities with the students. He may be seen dressed in a pair of Rahs-Rahs going to Ship Island or playing volleyball. We are proud to have Mr. Johnson as our Academic Dean. DEAN Ill? STUDENTS As Gulf Park's Dean of Women, lVIrs. Ferrell has one of the most important and difficult jobs on campus. Mrs. Ferrell is a true friend of the entire student body. Every student who attends Gulf Park College will remember her sympathy and help. Her interest in campus activities and the betterment of Gulf Park make her worthy of all our thanks and praise. SENIIIH CLASS UFFIIIEHS The Senior Class of 1967-a group of girls bound together by two years, yet each true to her own sense of self. From different backgrounds and beliefs they had come-to merge and become a part of the strong intangibility that is Gulf Park. As a class they had shared much: tradition, symbolized by the Oak, the mugs, the nightshirts, the fountain, From Top to Bottom: Diane Carinhas, Sergeant at Arms, Anne Kinney, Vice President, Kathi Tontz, Secretary, J. B. Bettencourt, Song Leader, Ja Montgomery, Treasurer, Jane Friday, President. the Hall, the cannon, and the hats. As a class they had shared learning and laughter. They had become wiser in their efforts to lead-young sages who had so much yet to learn-giving as Well as gaining. The Seniors of 1967: the ones who cared. They had given themselves to Gulf Park, and in return they had become a part of the past that is so respected. But most important, 1967, to each Senior, was worth a memory. 1967 SENIIII-IS REBECCA L. IIFFIIIEHS A girl's first year at college away from home is an extremely formative year of her life. It is during this time her mind developes- her ideas, her dreams, her hopes begin to take shape. In short she begins to discover herself. Experience is the teacher with proof to back up knowledge. Friendship is kindled, leadership fansg unity flames. Each student in her own way displays the desire and determination to accomplish a goal worthy of the respect and admiration of others. This first year holds innumerable experiences of sorority pledging, long hours of studying, sun bathing on the beach, and evenings in the smokers. Life is strenuous, trying, but so rewarding. A young woman emerges to take her stand in the future. The year is all but a flash of time. 72 MARTHA ALICE AGER . . . Liberty, Texas . . . Theta Alpha. CI-IERYL AMYX . . . They sent reconnnendations to the advisory council on different matters that were beneficial to the students. Our government represented all of the students and initiated many programs -a new constitution, a surprise Christmas party for all students, the annual Christmas tea, and Dead Week. They also sent two representatives to the state conference. Deane Poellnitz, as President, with eight representatives from the two classes put forth a strong effort to make the student government efficient. The Judiciary Board, under the leadership of Carole Cole, gave the students representation in the disciplinary sphere, striving to encourage good citizenship, healthy attitudes, and a sense of justice in all students. This board was composed of a representative from each dormitory and each class who worked with the help of Mrs. Phillips. Their greatest concern was helping the Student Government to establish an atmosphere in which each student could develop her capabilities to the fullest extent.
