In this edition of the Sea Gull, we have tried to represent changes by using pen and ink sketches in a style new to our yearbook. We have tried to express those feelings that never change in the quotations from Robert Frost found on each division page. Each girl has different recollections of this year at Gulf Park and we hope that the 1964 SEA GULL includes all the happiest ones. Christi Angelo EDITGR Dedzmted to The H zlglr 5211001 Wfhcn one thinks of the High School, perhaps the two words most readily associated with it are enthusiasm and loyalty. Enthusiasm builds the spirit of a school, while loyalty strengthens what a school stands for. Because it possesses these qualities, the High School has done much to make Gulf Park mean as much as it does to each student. Although with the 1965 graduation of this year's freshman class will come the discontinuing of the High School, the effects of the High School spirit will always be a part of Gulf Park, and for this reason we dedicate the 1964 SEA GULL to the High School. , Qt .Q .- . - -V gm 95 X. fx: ,-2 , N f 1? - X ,-s, '11-lg. g . x- -Il? 7 4 . While this purpose is inherent, students have found also that school days involve living in the present as well as preparing for the future. Multiplied memories of happy associations, of joys and per- plexities, of despairs and triumphs, and of pleasur- able moments accumulate during the years that one studies to make later life better. The school year represented by this issue of SEA GULL was unusual for Gulf Park. Enrollment was at its historic high, over a fourth larger than the year before. The year began under duress and the heroic response of students and staff members to President James living in a four-mile distant motel, riding the bus to the campus, eating portable-kitchen-prepared food under quickly erected army tents-these improvisations and the spirit in which they were carried out will long be remembered. Then the new dining room and kitchen and an air-condi- tioned dormitory. Life's enjoyments come from the ordinary and usual as much as from the extraordinary and un- usual. Who can forget the taste of Bennieis cook- ing, of Eva's roasts and fried chicken, of Willie's rolls, and of the courteous way in which these de- lights were served by white-coated dining room assistants? Then there were confabs in the student lounges, yelling and rivalry and enthusiasm in sports events, the latest and the loveliest in the fashion shows, suspense and amusement in superb dramatic productions, and even the struggle to get the mailbox open for that yearned-for letter that wasn't always there. These were the repeated things that will flash across memory's page so often in days to come. Of course, the prime purpose of going to col- lege is to develop one's mental power through the acquisition of knowledge and the discovery of methods to acquire even more. I hope that your education is never finished, but that the efforts of your dedicated instructors at Gulf Park will result in ever-widening horizons of thought, enjoyment, and usefulness for you. my H. Preston ames Judy james, President and Mrs. james M '-NM I Wlolllklm B. Raboum, Burinefr Manager To whom do the girls of Gulf Park tum to discuss a leaking radiator, a sticking door-knob, or hot water that is not hot? The business man- ager is the one who must take care of these small but trying troubles, while he works with purchas- ing, accounting, budgeting, food service, the Y-Hut, the bookstore, and general maintenance of the grounds and buildings. Mr. Raboum, the present business manager, handles with ease and efficiency the burdens of this complex position. Mr. Rabourn and his wife Carol, with.their children, Bill and Sheri, have been at Gulf Park for three years. Always amiable, Mr. Rabourn helps students and staff to cope with their problems that fall within his realm of responsibility. Bill, Mr. Raboum, Sheri, Mrs. Rabourn IO f is -l 'N S YU-17 l X 'xl 1 Bemrzzbce Camp Dean of Studentr Miss Camp talks with julia Brownell. This position is not an easy or a simple one, and it takes much patience. Dean Camp has proved herself capable of discharging the duties of Dean of Students with kindness, understanding and a sense of youthfulness. She has only been here one year, yet she has made herself an intricate part of student life. Her oflice and her willing ear are open to all who need her help or her advice. She readily listens to all sides of a question and willingly grants reasonable requests. It is her desire to be ,,,:--O . fair to the students, and her decisions are directed to this end. Tempering discipline with reason and good judgment, she is decisive, yet maintains a friendly relationship with the student body. Soon the enormous task of arranging schedules, registering and counseling returning students and bewildered newcomers began for Dean Price and he was always available to help students with academic problems. Cordial and discerning, Dean Price encourages each student to develop good study habits and to use time wisely. He stresses the need for a well- rounded academic background. Exhibiting great interest in the students and the institution, Dean Price contributes much to Gulf Park,s educational program. Mrs. Dowd consults with Dean Price. K. I2 8.4! R Jai 5.40.1 CifizensAiP ' miss Qnger Carre The greatest honor bestowed on a High School girl at Gulf Park is the High School Citizenship Award. Miss Ginger Garroll, this year's winner, was chosen by the entire student body as the best ex- ample of the ideals of Gulf Park to be found in its spirited high school. Ginger is a warm, friendly person who always finds time to talk to any student. She is quite active in all fields of sports, and her competitive spirit makes her well-liked by all. Ginger knows how to win well, she can also lose well if defeat comes. Her willingness to accept responsibility is ap- preciated by students and faculty alike. Being president of the high school has not deterred Ginger from being just one of the girls, too, She takes pleasure in help- ing people and is frequently embroiled in ironing out little difliculties in her dormi- tory. With all the time she spends on extracurricular activities, Ginger does not neglect her studies, maintains a good av- erage, and is an active member of the Beta Glub. As a leader, student, and all- around girl, Ginger is an inspiration not only to the high school but to the whole student body of Gulf Park. Gufsfancbng unior iss Cary CArisfian Gulf Parkls Outstanding Junior is not only able to do many things but she does many things well. Cary Christian is a good and loyal leader, a cooperative student, an accomplished athlete, a talented guitarist, a singer and composer of songs, a Five Point Senior Girl Scout, and a look into her background reveals an unusual devo- tion to others. The Junior Class is the largest on cam- pus and is composed almost entirely of new students, With enthusiasm, determi- nation, and strength, Cary, as class presi- dent, has led the juniors through tourna- ments and projects, and kept class spirit high. She is a very active member of her sorority, Sigma Psi Iota, and of the Student Council, still she maintains a high scholastic average. After an afternoon of practice for a sports tournament Cary might be seen, in the early evening, playing her guitar and singing with a group of friends. Later on she might be found studying or helping another student with lessons. In the past Cary has spent much time with scouting activities, visiting and read- ing to the confined aged, and helping crippled children learn to swim. For her friendliness, loyalty, leadership, and enthusiasm, Cary is recognized by everyone on campus as an outstanding junior. 7 -M Jn- IS 1-in 9? A' j 'l ff Qt , Q-f 3 Kyo? On the campus Susan had leading roles in A Thurber Carnival, A Sunny M0rning', and You Can't Take It With You. Her performances in the Dance Recital and Fashion Show were brilliant. She produces the weekly radio program, Meet Gulf Parkw. Doing nothing half-way, Susan not only holds three oflices, acts in and produces many programs, and helps with her sorori- ty, but she is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honorary scholastic fraternity. Vicki reigned as queen of the Bit and Spur Court at the Mardi Cras Ball and was chosen May Queen by the student body. She has modeled at fashion shows here on the campus and also on the Coast. When a recent movie was Hlmed about the Coast, Culf Park was proud to be rep- resented by Vicki. In A Thurber Carnival Julie played several diflicult roles and, like changing moods of a sunset over San Fran- cisco Bay, she moved with great agility from one character to another. Julie is president of Samovar, the art organizationg secretary of Delta Chig and art editor of the SEA GULL. 1. A 1 D: J H A. ,xv , . inc K 1. And 'cSukey,' seems to always be present to lend her helping hand. The devotion of the student body to Sue Carey is very evident, A member of Delta Chi and other campus organizations, she has served as president of the Senior Class, secretary of the Student Council, and member of the Athletic Association Board. No matter what she undertakes, she performs all of her duties with a sincere willingness. Wfilmette, Illinois, has every right to be proud of this amazing young lady whose interest in everything and everyone, along with her quick smile and delightful man- ner, has made her most popularn at Gulf Park. mosf Iversafile miss Mallory WAife Mallory White, Kansas City, Missouri, is equally competent with tennis racket, basketball, volleyball, water skis, paint brush or guitar. An outstanding leader and campus beauty, Mal was elected president of Delta Chi Sigma and is a member of this year's May Court. Last year Mallory was recognized as Gulf Park's Outstanding Junior and with versatility she has fulfilled the expecta- tions forecast by this recognition, as her skills and talents have enriched many campus activities this year. 5. 4 'Ji B Na - r 'M 41 JU f w s 4' . 4 3: ii- I! 1 gf.- -4 s if' . .t . Many a frown has changed to a smile due to one of her dry, htunorous remarks. MiLinda's merrymaking rightly brought her the title c'Bel Esprit. most! Ligegy to ggucceevl miss 5471142 errcyman When Anne Berryman of Ashland, Kansas, graduates in May, there will be no doubt in anyone's mind that wher- ever she goes or whatever she undertakes, she will succeed. Her tireless efforts and leadership abili- ties have won for Anne the respect of all at Gulf Park. Anne is president of the Sigma Psi Iota Sorority and an active member of many other campus organiza- tions, With the energy of a Trojan, she carries out her responsibilities with grace and ease. Anne's charm and beauty brought her such honors as being a member of the Mardi Gras Court and the May Court. When the student body bids Anne fare- well this year it will be with the sure knowledge that Gulf Park will miss her and will wish her well. esf Sporf P1 miss enneffe joAnsfon If a joke is in order or a prank is to be played, look for Jen Johnston to be in- volved. It makes no difference whether she is playing the joke or is on the receiving end of it, for Jen's sense of humor is always on display. It is for this reason, along with many others, that Raleigh, North Caro- lina's Jen has been named this year's Best Sport. On the athletic field Jen is not only im- portant as a teammate but also important in raising the morale of her team, whether in victory or defeat. She has won the admiration of all her schoolmates for her good sportsmanship. Jen's high standards of fair play led her to being elected Chairman of the Judiciary Board. Her selflessness and sense of justice have won for her the affection of all at Gulf Park. Her unique sense of humor has brought gaiety to our campus. mosf add lefic iss lpen ncy errcy Thoughts of fun or sun bring thoughts of Penny Terry. Wherever there is sun- Nassau, Gulf Park, or her own home town of Danville, Indiana-Penny is out soak- ing up the raysn and having a good time doing it. This year Penny has served as President of the Athletic Association, and her energies and talents have inspired one and all to join in the activities, both on the playing field and on the sidelines, Penny is quite an accomplished athlete. She plays volleyball, basketball, tennis and baseball like a pro, and spends her su-m- mers riding and swimming, Is there any- thing she canlt do? Pennyls Hne sense of sportsmanship is displayed whether she is playing for fun or helping her class win His Majesty the Goat in serious class competition. All this-and beauty, too. Rushees were shown that even the smallest angel could find her way into Delta Chi Heaven if she really cared enough. After running through the Stardust, the members of the sorority served their guests Mpink cloud cotton candy and lemonade for a part of the fun. With hopes held high in the clouds the rushees left the Y-Hut. At Christmas time the Delta Chis experienced a memorable time. They hosted a party in the Y-Hut for some of the less fortunate children of the Coast. The members were divided into groups and each group was given a child to buy gifts and toys for. The highlight of the party was a skit and a visit from Santa-Randy Jones-Claus and his reindeer. When it was time for the party to come to an end, the Delta Chis found it somewhat hard to say goodbye to their'l children. The party set off the Christmas spirit for the girls. . The inter-class tournaments for the goat, held each year, are a project of the A. A. These include such varied sports as volley- ball, basketball, tennis, and softball. The exhuberant team spirit that is so vividly demonstrated throughout the mounting excitement of the tournaments aids in the development of a keen sense of competi- tion and an ardent desire to excel. The annual Mardi Gras Ball, which is held under the joint sponsorship of the A. A. and the Bit and Spur Club, is one of the most momentous of the yearly projects. It is a much-anticipated event of the school year, which all students may enjoy. Among the many other activities of the A.A. are the long-remembered trips to Huckleberry Hill, twilight beach sup- pers around a Hickering fire, and Sing Song. The most important activity of this club, however, is the fostering of good sportsmanship and a love of sports.
