As we see it now, the SEA GULL represents not only ,those F L4 gateways which swing open to the future, but, f those which in the future we can open to what . 5151 ! H be the past. Later it will recall to us the intanf ' 1 bonds which will connect us always with Gulf. l wwf! 3 This year we have learned to understand, apprlz-ci and love Gulf Park and her traditions. We learned .ic ' know and greatly admire the faculty through th ' generous giving of time to sponsor our activities an to guide us in our academic work. We welcomed the friendships of each student. We recognized with pride scholars who achieved academic excellence, athletes who pulled the individual classes through sports com- petitions, leaders who took the classes through thick and thin, the queens who were elected for their poise, personality, and beauty. We enjoyed the unique op- portunities offered to each student-trips to Huck and Ship, athletic competition for class possession of ' Majesty the Goat, the Evangeline Tour, the Cruise, the Natchez Tour and Mardi Gras It was through all these that we gained the edge not only of events and ideas, but also of life, and committed to our memories the sounds of all the gates we had opened. 'T Here, now, is your 1963 SEA GULL, a record of the school year for you, the students. who opened the gates and lived the life, and made Gulf Park College what it was in 1963. These gates have now closed for the gradu- ates of '63, but this SEA GULL remains a key which will always reopen them. Certainly no one who has ever known him can express the greatness of his service to so many, nor how much he will be missed by all. Dr. Cooke came to Gulf Park in 1929 from Northwest- ern State College in Natchitoches, Louisiana. In his position of Business Manager, he faced many special problems as a result of the depression and Wars, but there was never a job too great nor too small for him to handle. After serving as Business Manager, Dr. Cooke was named Vice-President of Gulf Park in 1950. This posi- tion presented new responsibilities and more Work, but he always seemed to enjoy all the activity and readily took on more if it would help someone. In an effort to offer even more opportunities for his girls, he ar- ranged for tours to historic Natchez, the Evangeline country, the Caribbean, and Mardi Gras which have provided unforgettable memories for countless stu- dents. However, Dr. Cooke will be remembered not only be- cause of the way he performed his business duties at the school, but also because of the personal interest he took in all students. His answers to all kinds of prob- lems, from boyfriends to bouncing checks, the friendly chats over dishes of ice cream, but most of all the smile and cheerful hello at every passing will be fondly re- membered as we think of the man who to everyone, on or off campus, is Mr. Gulf Park. For his undying devotion and unselfish service to Gulf Park, we proudly dedicate this 1963 SEA GULL to you, our own Dr. Cooke. 4- Y 5 Epi RL 9 , r Y 29 X, QE 'R 'R 4- 21 ' Q P-N' 'V' Education is a controlling grace to the young, a consolation to the old, wealth to , ,Um he poor, an ornament to the richf' be ff-- bil' A 2 r My M-rkxvi . Our associations at Gulf Park teach us much moreg we have a personal responsibility for our education. We must cultivate within our- selves the wish to learn, the curiosity to investigate new horizons, the determination to produce superior work. We are fortunate to recognize this fundamental truth represented by the Gateway to Education: it does not close when the school year is over, but remains open for the rest of our lives if we have the desire to continue to seek knowledge. 7 W' Hx I ,fi Z, Q Q , 2 5 .w-nw.,-',,..0 UL1 Dr. H. Preston James. President of Gulf Park PRESIDENTS MESSAGE The student body of 1962-63 has been the largest in the entire history of the College. In your coming, this beautiful campus was graced with an assemblage of youthful energies and fine influences from many communities and many family backgrounds. In your leaving, may you carry back home an enriched and effective life that will project the highest ideals of Gulf Park. Until you return, we shall miss you, but we will be happy in the thought that you will be representing in many places the real meaning of your institution. 8 Some dreams for your college have been coming true this year-the new kitchen and dining room, the air-conditioned residence hall, the new post office and student lounge. We have been torn up with prog- ress, and you have been most considerate and patient throughout the inconveniences that accompany new construction. I hope you have been inspired by these beginnings of institutional growth, for there is more to come, hopefully in the near future. Perhaps some of your personal dreams have come true this year. You are a year closer to the goal you have set for yourself. Maybe some perplexing problem in your life or thought has been resolved. Maybe the direction you wish your life to take has been determined. Maybe a cherished ambition is achieving fulfillment. Your friendships have increased. If this year at Gulf Park has been the time and the place where you have found increased happiness and usefulness, we rejoice with you. I hope that Gulf Park has played a significant and uplifting role in your life and that you understand and appreciate the world and the society in which you will live, that you can yearn more intensely for the noble and useful life, and that you are aware that the facts and relationships of life are just beginning to be opened up to you. May you look back upon this year as one of the happiest and most mem- orable you have known. 14 KVWVM4 and Mrs James and then daughter Judy 4.4:--M--M -V -- - .. .WWW X 9 W'-ew 1 J VICE PRESIDENT DR. RUPER-T I-I. COOKE Whether he is planning the Spring Cruise, planting flowers to beau- tify the campus, or inviting you to his home for a dish of ice, cream, Dr. Cooke is full of enthusiasm. The liveliest man on campus, he has the energy and cheerfulness that make him one of Gulf Park's best-loved personalities. Q IO DEAN OF STUDENTS For the past few years, friendliness and fairness have marked the guidance we have received from our Dean of Students. We recognize and respect her strength and refinement as we benefit from her pro- fessional advice. In helping with personal problems, working with the student government, or co-ordinating the social activities, Dean Simmons has been a symbol of gracious living. She has been the keeper of the key that opens the gateway to our society. We regret her decision to leave Gulf Park, but we wish her future success as she, like so many of us, opens a new gateway next year. DEAN IRENE E. SIMMONS l' .1 .Ss- A-,,,f ,A 1- 'x 'kgs--5. II 1 vi iw- rf---N-f-www,.,..,,,, ESQ? 5 X DEAN WILLIAM SADLER ACADEMIC DEAN The man who holds open the gateway to achievements and accom- plishments is Dean William Sadler, for no one at Gulf Park has more influence on the scholastic standing of the students than he does. His concern for what and how much we learn often spurs us on to greater heights. He is respected and loved by all for his academic and voca- tional counseling, and for his sincere desire to help and guide each student. For the past fifteen years, Dean Sadler has confined his talents to Gulf Park. Now, he believes he must once again become a student and is going to work on his doctorate. Gulf Park will greatly miss not only William Sadler, the Dean, but William Sadler, the individual, who lives by the principles he teaches. IZ F555 mn -.nl FACULTY -fur- 'Fr-r SARAH P. Henria1me's radiant personality imparts a special warmth to her associations with others. Her unfailing willingness to accept responsibilities, large and small, is appreciated by faculty and students alike. As a good scholar and Student Council President, Henrianne is an inspiration to our own class and to those who follow us. iTi+g..L- --- - A ,- ,fm 'w . M, aft: 7.5. ' - v - an WTI? Everyone was doing their best to practice and perfect the songs that would be sung on the big night. Sing-Song is one of the most important events of the school year. It is the only competition for the goat in which every member of the stu- dent body must participate. As usual, school and class spirit was tremendous. The Juniors. dressed in plaid skirts, white shirts, and carrying blue-glittered banners, came from behind the night of Sing-Song to win the competition. His Majesty the Goat re- turned to his hiding place among the Junior class. Under the direction of Mallory White and the peppy cheerleaders, the Juniors gave an excellent performance. The Seniors, directed by Ginny Klinke, dressed in pastel skirts and high heels. Their blouses sparkled with glitter. Their perform- ance was outstanding. They deserve much credit for their hard work and contagious good spirit. Black skirts, white shirts, and red banners costumed the High School Skippers. They were directed by Susy Hardwick and they too gave a very good performance. After a seemingly endless intermission, Miss Clapp announced the points, Dr. James awarded the Goat, and pandemonium broke loose in the auditorium. 'lf' ' Q . .3 i Y 5' S - .
