The Hrst hint of this feeling occurs before even arriv- ing on campus in September. The new stu- dents are anticipating the meeting of their vet unseen roommates. and the returning ones can hardly wait to see the old gang again. Anticipation is one of the strongest and most frequent moods we experience. Remem- ber how that second hour class dragged? When it was over. we had just enough time to look for that expected letter at the Post Oflice. The feeling we had before meeting that blind date might have been called dread: but the mood of anticipation wasn't far re- moved. I M0 t Intelle tual Miss JUDY RIVARD Judy Rivard hardly conforms to the modern-day image of the intellectualee-quiet, isolated, and studious. In fact, she is far from this image. As President of the Student Council, her duties are numerous, time-consuming, and difficult-yet she still manages to have her name on the Dean's List each quarter. Judy has also found time this year to give two Diploma Recitals-one on the piano and one in voice. The excellence of both recitals attested to her rare talent, and next year, majoring in music, Judy will attend Florida State University. The most amazing thing about Judy is that she fully lives each twenty-four hours and accomplishes, with seeming ease, not only expected duties, but extra ones as well. Her contributions to Gulf Park have not gone unnoticed, and when she graduates this May, Judy will go with the admiration and affection of the entire student body. Active in her class, she was elected Sports Manager, ll post on the Athletic Association Board, and most of those decorations for the dances were executed by her skilled hand. Her main interest. of course, is art. and at graduation she will receixvf a special Art Certificate. As long as Nu-Nun can reiiieuiher. she has been drawing and painting-Aand has done many unusual oils which adorn the walls of various rooms in the school, After graduation from Gulf Park, Lana Gail will continue her art education at North East Louisiana State. Mo t Popular Miss PAM MORLOCK The person who wakes with a smile and can manage a conversation before breakfast is a rare one in these parts-qPam Morlock accomplishes both these Herculian feats with seeming ease. Pam's popularity is shown by the actions of the student body in electing her president of Delta Chi Sigma, Vice-President of the Senior Class, and swimming manager of the athletic board. Not only is she seen working for these organizations, but is a participating member in the Glee Club and several other clubs. Because of Pam's pleasing personality, genuine interest in others, and real charm, she was aptly voted the honor of Most Popular at Gulf Park. Next year Pam will be as busy as ever at the University of West Virginia where she plans to major in Speech Therapy. M 0 1? Associating with wonderful young people of your own age and with instructors and others who have much to offer you from their experience, you have undoubtedly sensed within yourself growth and development from which you can draw strength and stability during the years that lie ahead of you. I have often heard the statement that there is something distinctive about a Gulf Park student. Observing your earnestness and sincerity of effort, your courtesy and manners in relation to others, and your zeal at both work and play, I have come to believe that statement. You brought a good home background with you when you came, What has been added to your mental and spiritual capacity by your Gulf Park experience should help you face life with confidence that you can be useful and happy. I hope that you will come back to Gulf Park frequently, that you will think of the campus frequently, and that you will tell others of the college you learned to love. Gulf Park's First Family DR. Dr. James came to us with a BS. from Ball State 'I'eaeher's College, a MA, and Ph.D, from the University of Illinois, and a wealth of teaching and administrative experience. The wami welcome extended to us all by the james family has created a feeling of confidence throughout the members ol' the entire school, and through Dr. james' efforts, Gulf PZ1l'lilSll0I'llUXN have been broadened. It is with great pride that we. the 1962 Si-:A Gl'I.L staff, along with the faculty and the entire student body thank our new president and his charming family for helping make this a truly memorable year. 31 Vi e- efzblent DR. RUPERT H. COOKE Although he may be in the midst of arranging reservations for the Natchez Tour, getting dates for the girls on the Spring Cruise, or making travel reservations for the Christmas holidays, the busiest man on campus, Dr. Cooke, always has the time to talk with any girl who may wander into his ofliee. No matter what Dr. Cooke is doing, he emits a contagious feeling of energy, eheerfulness, and interest in the students. Come on over to the house tonight for coke floats is a Common ery on the Gulf Park campus, and often times a group of girls will be seen trooping into the white house next to the swimming pool. In our retrospective mood what will be the hrst thing 'to come back to our memories? Will it begthose all too short days before gradua- tion. passing down hats, the beach on Monday's, practicing for graduation, May Festival, or grad- uation night. Or will we remember-those happy r?j trips to Pensacola. trips to Huck and Ship, or those weekends in N.O.!!! And, of course, Maitcli Gras and our first ball. Remember lighting for center tables-and. what should we have but ham and yarns! None of us will ever forget our Senior Hall, our Smoker and our precious hre- escape. Within those four walls of our Smoker we had live of our most treasured possessions: fifteen empty mail-boxes, empty icetrays, a full telephone booth, a dirty rug, and, of course, our steady date ---our T.V. And remember running upstairs after dinner on Thursday nights to save a chair in the smoker for that wonderful swoon-filled hour from 7:30 to 8:30-with our hero, Dr. Kildare. YN'e even stopped playing spite and malice and knitting dur- ing that long awaited hour. Serenades will also long be remembered-around the fountain or on the stairs. And who will ever forget Ro-Ro-Shhh. Looking back, all agree, these memories will be held dear. This mood rapidly changed into one of unity, happiness, comradeship, contentment, and also . . . confusion! Throughout the year, the Skippers displayed a tremendous spirit and enthusiasm in competition, As a result, Gulf Park's sacred goat had a nice long rest in Lloyd Hallls smoker. Pom poms wav- ing, hands clapping, and feet stomping led us to our greatest victory this year-Sing Song. Lloyd Hall, our home away from home, brings us many wonderful memories. Our misdemeanors were skillfully handled in a motherly fashion by Mama Throg. Mama Holtane, and Mama Smith. Every day at Gulf Park brought a new expe- rience to each of us. Hell always remember: Skipper hats . . . Sophomore mugs and rings . . . rat day . . . Oh! my aching back! . . . S-i-i-ing SO-O-Og Pra-a-actice. Girls! . . . the battle for front row seats to see Dr. Kildare . . . W'li0se dea merit slips, '... Mardi Gras . . . the beach . . . Ship Island . . . term papers . . . the excitement of graduation. It's diflficult to say good-bye to all the wonderful times we have had, but it is with even more sadness that the Skippers say good-bye to the wonderful friendships we,x'e made this year. A E fi S. bi' ff f rf' Far, far under the sea, King Neptune and his pretty mermaids spent the lazy summer, only to surface again in the fall to bring many happy memories of pledging, ratting, and initiation to the new mermaids of Delta Chi Sigina sorority. Lovely mermaids they were, too, as they went about their merry year of parties and fellowship. The scene opened one day in early September when King Neptune surfaced from his kingdom under the sea to pay a visit to Gulf Park, bringing with him members of his court, court jesters, and some other weird creatures who live under the sea. This sea scene was that of the Delta Chi Sigma rush party, held to introduce the sorority to the new students'of Gulf Park. With mermaids, sea horses, lobsters, and other sea fellows dancing around, King Neptune and his crew put on a play showing the various pur- poses of Delta Chi. After enjoying refreshments, singing, and rushing, the new students, dreaming of becoming Delta Chi inermaids, swam back to their dorms and eagerly awaited the time to pledge. This year in addition to its usual services, the Y. sponsored an Easter sunrise service that was at- tended not only by Gulf Park students, but by Coast residents as well. It was truly a school-community service and one which everyone hopes will become annual. ..C. The installation of Y-Cabinet. Sell 'em anything. an M. 4 i a. 4 QE? -sm 5... ar? Offering Z1 wide variety of sports, it enables each student to participate in most any sport of her choice. Its board, consisting of the officers, class repre- sentatives, and managers for each sport, supervises the athletic activities of the school. Each month the Athletic Association sponsors a non-athletic activity. such as a beach supper, or a trip to Huck. As part of its duties, the association organizes the Sing-Song program and holds tournaments for the Goat in sailing, volleyball, basketball, softball, and swimmingg and after each tournament, awards letters to outstanding players. Another project which the association shares each year with the Bit and Spur Club is the sponsoring of the Mardi Gras Ball. This year, for the first time, prospective members had to pass a test for membership which proved they knew basic riding terms. This club, one of the most active on campus, has attended several out of town horse shows-the First in November at Baton Rouge-and the last' in April at New Orleans. The annual Christmas Party was held for the horses in their gaily decor- ated stables, and refreshments were in the form ol: sugar lumps and carrots. The annual Mardi Gras Ball is co-sponsored by the Bit and Spur and the AA., and their queens and courts added much to the beauty of the occa- sion. Teve Thorne was crowned Queen of the Bit and Spur Court. Her attendants were Nancy Pace, Sara Locke, Ginny Klinke, Jan Schloth, Kathy Mathis, Peggy O'Neal, Sue Thomas, and Nancy Locke. During the course of the year the students of Gulf Park were entertained by numerous horse shows the club sponsored. Gymkhana, a strictly fun show, had everyone yelling for the balloon racers Rosserlyn Ramsay, Miss Smith, Cheryl Wood, Nancy Kennedy, Barb Simonson, Teve Thorne. Bit and Spur and clothes-horse race. The most important event of the year, however, occurs in May-The Com- mencement Horse Show, where the riding students compete for trophies and ribbons. Beach ride. The Aquettes Club has a membership of girls interested in synchronized swimming. Included in the club is a group called the g'Aquettes Chorus, which consists of girls who execute different swim- ming strokes, but are not required to do the stunts of the more advanced Aquettes. Under the direc- tion of Miss Jane Morrison. the Aquettes plan and write the choreography for the annual water ballet shows. This year the Aquettes performed at the Buena Vista Hotel as well as at the annual' water show during commencement week. The theme this year, A Pallet of Mixed Emotions, combined emotions with appropriate colors. Among others these included Red as Anger, Pale Green as Serenity, Purple as Passion, Pastels as Gaiety. HARRIET SMITH Photographer MISS RUTH SCHREIBER PAUL MONTELL MESSAGE FROM THE ANNUAL STAFF The Changing Moods that prevail at Gulf Park during the course of the year are expressed by one group on campus-The SEA GULL Staff. Confusion occurs at every meeting, as we de- cide on the theme, receive our assignments, plan the layout and mark pictures. Also, tenseness comes over us all, especially our Editor, as the deadline approaches and the annual is not finished. Our Editor constantly is yelling for help, and co-operation. Our reply is, I promise it will be in tomorrow. Then, as soon as we come back from Spring Vacation and the Annual has already gone to press, we sigh with relief and regain our peace of mind. However, we are eagerly anticipating sec- ing the finished product that we spent so many hours preparing. As it comes time to hand the SEA GULL out, sadness overshadows us. We are now realizing that our work has ended and with it the year is drawing to a close. It's only a few more weeks now and we will be saying good-bye, but may this, the 1961-62 SEA GULL, be our link of friendship and memories of good times that will be cherished always in the hearts of Gulf Park students. Come now Think, Gale! ! I get the picture. tx Nag R , . 14 3 E s D DICA T10 .wff:4Aw.f. . A - MA tcachcr alllects ctcrnityg hc can nc-yer tell whcn his influcncc stops.
