This world, seen in the pages of the Sea Gull, though gone, is a brief glance of a time in our lives -a time which was as short as the dim, gold, flicker- ing of the last sun ray on the nightingaleis quick eye, but as fast and bright as a Haming meteor. THESE WERE TIMES OE NEW EXPERIENCES . . New faces, new places, and a new home-- these were the events which began the Gulf Park time of our lives. The first few weeks of our year were spent meeting new friends and learning their names and, of course, getting ac- quainted with our roommates. Pensacola, New Orleans, Gulfport, and our own campus are among the many new places we learned to know and look forward to visiting. Bedspreads, cur- tains, rugs, lamps, linen, pictures, bulletin boards, '. 'gi ,f 41 . 4 I a ' ff. I . ,, , f 1 3 , , I. , yy Q. li O! DEV and record players were brought into our homes after much planning, buying, and decorating. The friends we have depended upon, the places we have visited and the new home we have made here are memories about Gulf Park which each and every one of us will remember always. Many were the minutes or hours we spent in Dean Sadler's office. We went to classes . . . sometimes we strolled, sometimes we waded, sometimes we ran, and sometimes we didn't go! Busy we were! But we had our leisure also . . . loafing on the beach, meeting a new the one, playing tricks on each other, and spending hours talking to our roommate. THE TIME OF YUUR LIFE The hrst chance to make an appearance on stage, the first time to sing before an audience, the first time to further those academic plans-these are but a few of the many f'irsts we have realized at Gulf Park. Here we have been able to fulfill, in one form or another, be it music, academics, or dramatics, these dreams for the futuref, H if fi l 552 - kg. 5,21 x Q, ,, , my 4 DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION CLASSES STATISTICS GREEKS ATHLETICS ORGANIZATIONS Q4 ifwf' 1 4 wa HONOR The Scottish playwright James M. Barrie has said that if a person has charm he needs nothing else, but if he has no charm it doesn't matter what else he has. And charm describes Colonel Eugene A. Wink, professor of European and Ameri- can history at Gulf Park. From 9:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.lVl., students find in Room 7A, a pixie-smiling, pipe-smoking gentleman lecturing enthusiastically on his great love-history. Wars, political and economical movements, and personalities become alive and important to students as they learn of their cultural, as well as historical, background. Like all great teachers, Colonel Wink has guided his students in many ways other than historical ones simply by his gentleness, his courtly manners, his willingness to help in any way he can. Because he has helped us grow intellectually, culturally, emotionallyg because he has been our friend, as well as our professor, because he is one whom we admire and love .... we dedicate the SEA GULL of 1960 to Colonel Eugene A. Wink. Vi s EUGENE A. VVINK QPLQQ-sm... UR PRESIDENT Mr. and Mrs. Gibson at Gulf Park Mardi Gras Ball. Culture is the study of perfection, and looks beyond machinery and coal, hates hatred and all sham, has one great passion, the passion for sweet- ness and lightfl One might say that this quotation by Matthew Arnold expresses the belief of Gulf Park's president, Mr. Joseph E. Gibson, for his prime goal at Gulf Park is the cultural develop- ment of the girls here. He urges high academic standing and exemplary citizenship as well as spir- itual growth for all students. The girls at Gulf Park know that they are al- ways welcome at the Gibsons, home. In addition to good food, there is always fine music to listen to, a fine library to peruse-or Nickie,,l the Sia- mese cat to play with. Mr. Gibson, we owe thanks to you for upholding Gulf Park's standards and keeping it the school it is. Mr. Gibson visits sorority party. The Gibsons welcome all girls lb - Now, you know that youlre on the top of my favorite list. u Gu1f Park College, Dr. Cooke spealiinguf 'F'Come over any night. Mrs. Cooke and I always have ice cream at ninef' l Let,s see now, you owe 331.32 to the stu- dent bank. Please take care of it as soon as your money comes in. - ff These are all familiar phrases echoing and re-echoing from the office of our daddy away from home. One may readily see the beautiful flowers so tenderly cared for on our campus, and the twinkling smile popping up from behind them which belongs to the man responsible for them. This could be none other than our business manager and vice-president-Dr. Rupert Cooke. Indeed he is one of the busiest yet best loved personal- ities on the Gulf Park campus. So come right in and tell him your problem. iYour permisxion i5n't in yet. - Aren't you going to the dance? l W'e1l, lil have to take this to the executive com- nzitteefl lvllflvy did you do it? You knew youla' be cani- pu.fea'. - Lets have a cup of coffee and talk this over. ZIP To the students of Gulf Parlc, Dean Julia Rine represents our own perfect ladyn in many respects. To those who need advice, a friendly smile to reassure them, or who just want to sit and chat, she is always there. Her congeniality radiates throughout the campus, as she lilces to laugh, is willing to compromise, and can adapt herself to the innumerable situations which arise. Yet, above all else, she is determined to hold high the standards of Gulf Park and to in- spire others to do the same. This is our Dean-de pendahle, congenial, and determined-our own per- fect lady. 19 'unh-ww. - You,ve overcut againfu - Wf7at do you mean you Want to drop this subject? l Well, g0OC1l morning, DEG-d-d-M17-Ul7.,,i .rr We're going to have to Write 4 letter l7OI71E'.,U . Renzember, I'm only one of the commit- teefi , f-N-new-. There is a Dean at GPC, Dean Sadler is his name. g Even though he is so mean, ' 7 7 We My He is our handsome Dean! r ' f Have you seen the pipe that is forever being lit, the bicycle hurrying across campus, the much scuffed desk in one of the offices in the AD Building, and the pink cards that appear so mysteriously? These are all remnants of Dean William Sad- ler, our Academic Dean, and are quite typical of our forceful, inspiring Dean. Forceful in char-in his gentlemanly way-he persuades the students to see him immediatelynand to agree whole-heartedly to whatever solution he may have to their academic problem. Inspiring in that he has a way of making a student feel worthwhile and determined to improve herself. Really he is not so mean, he just wants the best for each and everyone of his Dea-a-a-uh-uhs. EMLQ. Hurry, hurry, hurry, reservations to malce, reports to write, boolcs to order, bills to pay, and bills to send. I have to hurry. I'm busy, busy, busy! Perhaps, this is what Gulf Parkis new purchasing agent, Mr. Earl Coulon, might be saying on a typical day at the collegef, He is so efficient in any action he undertakes that we have all grown very dependent on him for various matters-large or small. He seems tireless, even though his work is never-ending, he is forever consenting to another arduous task. Yet, amid all the hustle and bustle of his days, he always has a friendly smile and a hearty wave for those he meets on campus. Mr. Coulon loves to laugh and to see others laugh with him. We welcome him and his family to the Gulf Park campus. l'Vfmt ix your problem, young lady Howdy your befm1'ior.9 Ola, the twins are fizzefu HeUo-Gregory-Ufv-fu-fy-fu, w.f.' Sigma, came two Gulf Park girls who were practically neurotic from trying to decide which sorority to pledge. While the girls were waiting to see the doctor, they encountered many unusual patients, ranging from beatnilcs to a mummy. After their decision to join Delta Alpha, their neurosis disappeared and they lived hap- pily ever after. Following this skit, refreshments were served and favors given to the rushees. Delta Alpha Sigma participated in the sponsoring of the Tri-sorority dance and the Tri-sorority banquetg and, with the Delta Chfs, spent a day in April at Ship Island. AAE 1 1 2 Y 3 1 1 1 Y Mg. The Y-I-Iut was transformed into radio station S-P-S-I, where Marti Sample, the disc-jockey, introduced the rushees to some of the former members of Sigma Psi who naturally are well known today. There were several verv entertaining routines performed by famous members, such as Pam lgingeris Spanish dance, Linda Bollingens entrance as a glamorous movie star, the boy scouts' not-so-glamorous skit on Camp Kukamonga. After the appearance of the last memory which brought forth the oriicers, everyone joined in a circle, and the Sigma Psi Iota song was sung to the rushees by the old mem- bers. Following the skit, refreshments were served and each rushee was given a 45 record as a favor. A new alma mater and a new pep song, both with original music and words, and an old class song are presented by each class. The night of the final performance three off-campus judges come to determine the winner. This year under the direction of Karen Wilbert, the High School, wearing dark skirts and white blouses with gay red bows, won for the third con- secutive time. Their peppy cheerleaders appeared in white pleated skirts and red sweaters with white collars. Directed by Norma Moore, the Seniors were at- tired in Gulf Park blazers, black skirts and sweat- ers. Since the Juniors were unable to come up with a team, the Seniors and the High School met on the field to fight for His Majesty the Goat. Only one game was played. The mighty Seniors powered through a strong, but not strong enough, High School defensive line. The score at the end, with bruises and humps on every player to prove it, was 8 to O. New faces and experiences gave us little time to notice the ever fleeting, ever changing days. Now, in retrospect, we know we can never forget big sisters, little sisters, rats, rat masters, peanuts, shells, mid- night noises , serenades, team sports, beach sup- pers, Ship Island, the pier, Friendship Oak, sprained ankles and knees, pink cards, closets, roommates, and most important the all engulfing warmth, admiration, and love among Gulf Park personnel. The sadness surrounding our leaving dear friends-for we know that these partings are final-adds to qualities that make the Gulf Park girl. Yes, every moment since that day in Septem- ber has proven time and again that this has been the unequaled Time of Your Life. .N ww f X KS' 5 l !4,yQx , k pf f 1 A kv- ik! In the time of your life, live-so that in that good time there shall be no ugliness of death for your- self or any life your life touches. Seek goodness everywhere, and when it is found, bring it out of its hiding-place and let it be free and unashamed. Place in matter and in flesh the least of the values, www 'im for these are the things that hold death and must pass away. Discover in all things that which shines and is beyond corruption. Encourage virtue in whatever heart it may have been driven into secrecy and sorrow by the shame and terror of the world. Ignore the obvious, for it is unworthy of the clear eye and the kindly heart. Be the inferior of no man, nor of any man he the superior. Remember that every man is a variation of yourself. No man's guilt is not yours, nor is any manas innocence a thing apart. Despise evil and ungodliness, but not men of ungodliness or evil. These, understand. Have no shame in heing kindly and gentle, but if the time comes in the time of your life to kill, kill and have no regret. In the time of your life, live-so rhar in that wondrous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the in- finite delight and mystery of it. lime of H our Life WILLIAN'l SAROYAN HOGUE LUMBER 8: SUPPLY CO.
