From its magician's pack of spells Life comes to conjure moments out of mystery: Street lamps peering through purple mist, Old trees in mossy silhouette, Sorcery in a fountainis falling spray. An image caught within the eyelidis blink. Of crystal worlds held captive in a tear. Life's brief moments are infinities. continuing Like the stars in blue-black heaven returning with midnight: Like the raindrops each new April returning with springg Like the pebbles of sand returning with the tideg And having once been lived and shared, These moments can never be relived, can ever be remembered. Girls come and girls go. and the Mama 'l'hrog whom we have known and loved dur- ing our one or two years here has been known and loved by Gulf Park girls for twenty years. Not one of her Lloyd Hall girls -past or present-will ever forget the au- thor of these familiar remarks: Who has the ice trays? . . . Well. I don't mind if I do take a little bite. Uh. what is it? . . . Bring me the money for your laundry. girls-cash only! . . . I want those rooms cleaned hefore you leave for any place! . . . Now. girls. I wouldn't want to give you any demerits. hut . . . That's the first time any- one's done anything like that in all my twen- ty years here! And all this time she has never once failed to stand up for her High School girls-even when they kept her awake at night hanging pipes or took their Release during Study Hall. No High School girl has ever had a bet- ter counselor or a more loyal friend. Proudly we dedicate this 1959 SEA GULL to Mrs. Exna Throgmorton. csv -fix' The South American Travelers f f f f ,f 44x Q W. 94. M t M, Z , 12' M937 ,s 0l'l'L6l6 urge wan Mer! A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDE T GIBSON This SEA GULL records many of the highlights in an exciting year of our lives-the Gulf Park School Year 1958-59l To me it has been both interesting and novel. unlike anything I have ever experienced in all my years as a teacher or an administrator. l have enjoyed this year. The thing I have liked most has been the cordial way in which you have ac- cepted me virtually as a member of the student body. Early in the year one little freshman summed it all up this way when she said. Mr, Gibson, you may look older. but you are really just our mental age. That. I submit. is a high compliment. so intended and so accepted. What higher compliment can young peo- ple pay an older person than to treat him as one who understands and belongs? Or. for that matter. what higher compliment can adults pay to youngsters than to treat them as their contemporaries? This is just another way of saying that we look upon each other as individualsg or that at Gulf Park, every person is a very important person! That is the very spirit of Gulf Park. The College is small enough for our daily associations to be close and friendly. The teachers and the counsellors t every teacher a counsellor, every counsellor a teacheri' I are refreshed and feel their youth renewed by living your lives with you, And you. to the extent that you are able to make use of their experience and their wisdom. you put yourselves ,way ahead tnot to say Agway out l. This hook, with its vivid pictures. recounts the exterior events in our lives, but its superior value to each of us in the future will be its power to remind us of the inner lives we lived this year: to remind us of our hopes, our fears. our sorrows. our joys, our aspirationsg to recreate the long. long thoughtsw of youth that Colne to us at Gulf Park. Not all has been joyous living, There have been hardships. disappointments and sorrows. I have par- ticular reference to the death of Sara Thomas which grieved us all. We shall always remember her. Then the death of Miss Kate Wetherbee, Registrar of Gulf Park College for twenty-nine years. was an irrepar- able loss. personal and professional. 5'Miss Kate, herself a graduate of Gulf Park. was everybodyis ideal of the womanhood to which a Gulf Park girl might aspire. Her life and work will long be remem- bered here. Many of you are leaving at the end of this year. while many will be returning-to all let me say, God Bless You. To paraphrase Sir Thomas Moore, oft in the stilly night ere slumber's chains have bound you, may fond memory shed the light of Gulf Park days around you. .,Q.g.....,, President, Mrs. Gibson, and Niki at home. He was formerly Director of Pre-admis- sions at Tulane University. President of North- western State College in Louisiana. and Director of Higher Education for Louisiana from 1941 to 1946. 111 addition to writing numerous artices for educa- tional journals and authoring several elementary textbooks. President Gibson edited The Mississippi Educational Advance, a professional magazine for El teachers. He has also served as the President of the Mississippi Education Association and as a member ol' the Associated Consultants in Education. Since July 1 the Gibsons have been on campus learning the ways of Gulf Park, The interest and the enthusiasm which they have shown in the college have been reflected throughout the campus. Their respect for Gulf Park traditions and their truly Southern hospitality have given the students the warmest welcome and helped make this year a most profitable one.
