An island from the world and the world's life. Islands in time . . . The past and the future are cut off: only the present remains. Existence in the present gives island living an ex- treme vividness and purity. One lives like a child or a saint in the immediacy of here and now. Every day. every act., is an island, washed by time and space, and has an island's completion. People, too, become like islands in such an atmosphere, self-contained, whole and serene, respecting other people's solitude, not intruding on their shores, standing back in reverence before the miracle of another individual. Gulf Park has been an island in our lives, an island set apart from any previous experience-an island of new friendships, new patterns of living, new relationships, new responsibilities, and intensified activities. All this has been brought about by a simplification of life. Just as the tide slowly returns to the beach of our island, we slowly learned the benefits of island living and came to know and appreciate them. No sooner does the tide reach its height, however, than it must return to the sea. We must leave our island also, but, as the tide leaves its shells, we take with us never-to-be-forgotten memories . . . Captain Edmond De .laive was among the faculty members. Before' coming to Gulf Park. Captain De .laive received a Bachilier-es-Lettres degree from the College Rachez. continued his studies at the Sorbonne and College de France in Paris, was Literature Critic at the Universite des Annales in Paris. and traveled extensively in Europe. Central and South America. Africa. and the Orient, He received his title of Captain. the name by which he is affectionately known to the students and faculty, while serving in the French army in World War l. While here, he was conferred with the honor of Oflicier d' Academic. the first degree of an honorary university order created by Napoleon 1 in 1808. Several years later in 1933 he was given the decoration and diploma of Oflicier de 1' Instruccion Publique, the second and highest award of that same order. These are only given to a limited number of persons who are outstanding in the fields of art and literature, and were presented to Captain De Jaive in recogni- tion of the work accomplished by him in the Department of French at Gulf Park College. for his activities as president of a chapter of the National Association of Teachers of French, and for his active' support of that organization. He was national vice president of that body in 1934-35 and national president in 1935-36. He has presented papers before the Foreign Modern Language Association of the Southern Association. and has written several treatises, one of them on Spanish verbs. Captain De .laive continues to contribute articles to The French Rt'l7fPIl', published by the National Association of Teachers of French. He possesses a speaking knowledge of several languages besides his own native French, among them are English, German. ltalian. Portuguese. and Spanish. All of these accom- plishments have been in addition to the teaching of French. Spanish, and German. and his duties as a member of the faculty of Culf Park College. Because he has contributed so much of his time. experience. and efforts to Gulf Park, Because he has contributed so much to the education and inspiration of her students, Because he is outstanding in his chosen field of study, Because he is the only original member of the faculty remaining, Because he has given thirty-six years of loyal service to Gulf Park College, We. the annual staff. are honored to dedicate the 1957 SEA GIYLI. to Captain Edmond De .laive in the year of his retirement. 17 ISCKS ,Nv- Z' f x 1 9 -oqfrn, ii C ' '. ,r. ,ri n. The Dwyer Family The school year of 1956-57 has been recorded pictorially and verbally on the pages of the SEA GULL. As you glance through this issue of the yearbook, you will be reminded of the diversified activities found on the Gulf Park campus. A closer inspection will reveal the persons and personalities associated with a few or many of the activities. Repeating itself as a theme will be seen the familiar surroundings which furnish the unique setting for these people and these events. We hope that this record will always remind you of the ideals of Gulf Park: earning a knowledge which makes for wisdom. and the opportunity for associations with different personalities and with people from the various geographic areas of this country and from some of those to the south. Our hope. which determines our policy. is that this wisdom and the benefit of these associations will make for each of you a more successful adjustment to the demands of life which you find about you now and with which you will be confronted in the future. lf you are a happier person because of your varied experiences on the Gulf Park cam- pus. then we both shall know that your efforts and our efforts have been worthwhile. It is through this association that girls at Gulf Park acquire good sports- manship and interest in extracurricular activities. His Majesty the Coat, representing ahility and sports- manship. is the trophy awarded to the class victorious in the individual sports-volleyball. sailing. hockey. basket- ball, softball, swimming-and also in Sing-Song. The organization sponsors over-night trips to Huckelberry Hill. the Mardi Gras Ball, and heach parties. The Senior team consisted of Judy Montaldo- captain. Susan Meilert. Barb Brown. Kay Cleft. Karen Neubacher. Jeanie Monte. Clare Adams. Carolyn Howard, Betty Wood. Joy Rosenau, and Josette Makowsky. On the third and final day of the tournament the High School was defeated by the Junior Class. whose cries of victory could be heard throughout the campus. The start of a race Who goin, to win? The first race began with much enthusiasm, The High School sailing team, including Susie Cooley. skipper. Heidi Holt, and Suzette Schwing. had little trouhle winning the first race, since both the Jun- ior and the Senior teams were disqualified for running into markers. The Senior team. consisting of skipper Nanci Brown, Mar- garet Ritter, and Barbara Browne, and the Junior team. Frances Lee, skipper, Mirelle Clark, and Jackie Villars. lost again to the High School team in the second race. The High School was indeed proud to claim His Majesty, the Goat. x A K 53 The Seniors The High School The Juniors accepting the goat A n W-ww ing- on cg One of the most beautiful and enjoyable. but yet one of the most competitive activities on the Gulf Park campus is Sing-Song. Each class is judged on performance. dress. and uniformity. The victorious group is chosen by oil-campus judges. The three classes showed excellent sports- manship. skill. and poise as they sang their beau- tiful alma maters and pep songs. The Junior Class. under the direction of Bev- erly Gratigny. marched onto the stage wearing white blouses and dark skirts. After the Junior Class sang their old and new alma maters. they finished with a lively pep song. The Seniors then ascended the stage dressed in black skirts. black sweaters. black loalers. and a Gulf Park blazers. They held their Senior caps in their right hands and sang the alma maters and pep song under the direction of Marilyn Marrs. The High School. in black sweaters and skirts with a small white collar, walked on stage with their cheerleaders dressed in the High School colors of red and white. Each class blended their voices in beatuiful harmony. The decision as to which class was best was one of the most diflicult decisions ever made for this activity. On the second day of the tournament the Seniors once again played. this time against the High School forces- Captain Sue Wilson, and players, Cathie Land. Ann Cremin. Anita Cetman. Katsy Mullendore. ,ludi Harris. Judy Bradwell, Suzette Schwing, Carroll Greenleaf. Carolyn Koehler. and Joanie Mills. The Seniors swamped the High School team by a score of 7-0. The third and final game was by far the most exciting. Both the Seniors and the Juniors were set to win his Majesty the Goat. but at the end of the second half the ,lunior team was victorious by a score of 5-0. The Basketball Tournament was held on March 14 and l5 between the Seniors and the High School. As the two teams started to play, Cheers for both sides could be heard all over the campus. Judy Montaldo led the Senior forces with Barbara Browne. Betty Jean Glenn. Su- san Meffert, Joy Bosenau, Barbara Buel- tinger. Frances Stillwell, and Betty Wood. Ann Sullivan and her teammates Suzanne Howard, Pat Hudson, Cathie Land. ,lean Laughlin, Katsy Mullendore, Cathy Rupert, and Jean Wootl led the High School on to victory as they won two consecutive games.
