To express in a few words a resume of the memories each of us holds of Mr. Hudgens cannot possibly be done. We can only try to present some of the more memorable qualities shared by us all. His genuine love' for his work, eagerness to help, and patient teaching generated to all-students and faculty-the warm and happy feeling of a good life. His ef- forts to formulate in our minds a better understanding of creation. the world we live in. and ourselves showed his immense inte-rest in his fellow man. His sense of humor. delight in everything around him, love for the ridiculous not only kept his sense of proportions balanced but helped us keep ours. We know not, understand not the reasons for his death. We know and under- stand our feelings of grief at having lost a teacher and friend. 16 DEDICATIO a l l MISS BONNIE SHARP Truly an iron hand in a velvet glove . . . Achieving and maintaining an equal balance between the typical college girl and the mature teacher and leader . . . Winsome laugh and impish smile sometimes used to cover her troubles . . . Unselfishly giving her time to chaperone weekend trips to Huck . , . Equestrienne unequaled . . . Loyally wearing her battered old sailor cap . . . The black riding habit with the starched white shirt and that usaucy, red how tie , . . Sponsor of the Senior Class . . . llnaware of her magnetic charm and her idolizing circle of admirers. Miss Bonnie Sharp, we the SEA GULI. Staff of 1956 are honored to dedicate this annual to you in appreciation for all you have contributed to the students, faculty. and school. To us, you are a truly memorable person, for by quiet example, you have shaped our futures more than you realize and captured parts of our hearts forever. 17 me i f..-V' ' wmv .. N' V,-X 'G' 1..s,'?, -Q The Dwyer Family To THE STUDENTS! Within the pages of the SEA GULL can be found the pictorial account of each student's life at Gulf Park. By substituting oneself for the actual person pictured, by adding details here and subtracting there, every girl has a photographic diary of her time spent here. No year- book, however, can do more than present the tangible part and suggest the intangible part of college life. The changes that take place in the individual, through new associations, ideas, and environment, cannot be snapped by the camera, yet the importance of these changes cannot be minimized. Here with the SEA GULL before her is an opportunity for each Gulf Park girl, at any time of her life, to recall not only cam- pus life as it was but herself as she Was. And if through these recollec- tions come more than nostalgic memories, if with them comes a rededi- cation to principles found here, then both the SEA GULL staff and Gulf Park College will be highly complimented. 6 L f --- V- Y--H-' An institution is the lengthened shadow of one man. Board Members Every college campus has something that it is proud of, whether it is a good basket- ball team, a new stadium, or an immaterial something known as Spirit. Gulf Park girls are justly proud of their spirit and sports- manship and eager to win the Goat which symbolizes these qualities. The coveted lVlr. Goat is awarded for excellence in Sing Song, swimming, softball, hockey, volleyball, and basketball. The organization that promotes good sportsmanship, and sponsors overnight trips to Huckleberry Hill, Sing Song, the lVlardi Gras Ball, skating parties, beach par- ties, and square dances at the Veterans Hos- pital is the Athletic Association. The strains of We're a grand old gang and together Weill bang could very well be the motto of the Athletic Association. His Majesty, the Coat ,gilspzg fi xii wg. ? Q, . This was the first athletic tournament of the year, and by reports from other years we be- lieve it Was one of the most exciting con- tests ever played. Although the Junior class was victorious, it could not be said that they won without effort. The Hrst game of the tournament saw the Seniors, captained by Judy Kennedy with team members Beth Tedford, Lynn McFarland, Sheila Ross, Biddie Hightower, Connie Jones, Louise Akard, Belinda McGinley, and Stephany Satterfield admitting to defeat by the Juniors. Their captain was Barbara Biesinger whose team was made Missed! 1 Tension Builds Within Us up of Judy Montaldo, Terry Grant, Susan Mefiert, Liz Kennedy, Janet Keehan, Betty Wood, and Carole Beech. But in the second game the tide changed to the Seniors' side, after an engaging battle with the High School, whose captain was Carole Schroeder and whose team members were Barbara Webb, Marsha Best, Cathie Land, Pat Shea, Barbara Davis. Heidi Holt, and Diane Stewart. The third and final game of the tournament paved the Way to victory for the Juniors, Who, as they snakedanced through the dining hall to reecive 4'His Majesty the Coat, sang '4Ho-Rah forthe Junior class. Her Team is a Fighting Classf, 1 l l . -l Senior Sailo Let it not he said that sailing races cannot be held without a sufficient amount of wind. This happened the first day of the tournament which began as the classes marched to the end of the pier, singing their pep songs. where each had decorated a spot with streamers of their class colors. As darkness fell on the pier it became evident to skip- pers Judy Kennedy, Heidi Holt. and Liz Kennedy and crewmen Liz Klinke, Joan Kintz, Sharon Gernsey, Van Kirtley, Penny Butler, Nancy Brown, Barbara Richards. and Terry Grant, that the tournament would he con- tinued the following day, The second day of the tournament provided both wind and thrills for the spectators. As the first race started the High School was ahead. hut lmoth of thc lwo opposing classes still had good changes of winning. After a hard afternoon of battle the reward ol victory His Majesty. the Coatfl was presented to the junior Class. 5 Sailing to Victory rs SAILING RACES 55,4-if Probably never in the history of Gulf Park has any student body seen classes challenge each other that were more equal in skill. Although this tournament far surpassed the length of time it was supposed to be played in, every student looked forward with much ex- pectation to every game. The tournament opened with a game between the Juniors. whose captain was Susan Mellert, and the High School whose captain was Bar- bara Webb. It was an exciting, hard-fought battle. but the Juniors were victorious. The second game, which was played between the High School and the Seniors, whose captain was Lynn McFarland, ended with a tie score. So the Seniors and High School were scheduled to play again. In this game the spectators thought that there was going to be another tie, but during the last quarter the High School rallied to beat the Seniors by a small margin. In the supposedly last contest of the tournament the High School challenged the Juniors again. Never have any spectators seen a more exciting game or two teams more equal in skill, because this contest ended in a tie also. Mother Nature seemed to resent having the Juniors win again KEYS Keep your eye on the ball last game of the tournament played by giving us a great deal of bad weather, but after a we-ek the High School and Juniors resumed play. This very skilled and thrill- ing contest finally gave us a Winner. After many weeks of suspense the Juniors enjoyed their victory with a great celebration. 44230 High School wins thc Goat!
