NSN mlnfmf 'N f 0 1 53 J Qimewmd Do you remember the first time you read Alice in Wonderland - the pleasure of your trip with Alice down the rabbit hole and into the world of make-believe? Of course you recall the friends you found there too-the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts. Perhaps that is how you will remember your stay in Gulf Park Land. When these days are just a memory, we hope you will again take that trip with Alice into her Gulf Park Wonderland and thus bring back happy thoughts of friends and college days. WVe wish for you a pleasant journey through the pages of the 1950 SEA GULL. XX M ? Q-v I Qefbcakolz ,g, H- M at ' ' R- .l l A friendly smile , . . a willingness to help others . . . a gracious manner , . . a generosity of time and effort . . . all are characteristics of Dr. and Mrs. Richard C. Cox, President and Dean of Residence of Gulf Park College. Twenty-nine years ago these two had an idealistic dream . . . to found a girls' school where the individual could strive for maturity through high scholastic standards, gracious living, and cooperation. Regardless of the depression or a second world war, that dream became a reality, and today the name Gulf Park bears significance the world over. Here at Gulf Park they have indeed established a record which they can look upon now and in the future with pride and satisfaction. The gentle philosophy and unyielding standards of the Cox's will be carried on next year by Dr. Charles Hogarth. To you, Dr. and Mrs, Cox, who have given a lifetime of service and have built an institu- tion from a dream to you, who will always live in our hearts, and in a thousand others . . . we proudly dedicate the 1950 SHA GULL. Hogarth IS accurately described. Though he has served as Vice Presl dent of Gulf Park for only one year, he has found a vital place in campus activ ities. Equally capable as teacher and execu tive, he has captured our hearts and has given much wisdom and friendship in return. To you, Dr. Hogarth, as next yeai you begin your first term as President of Gulf Park, we want to wish . . . good luck and much success. 1?-fV I ,R Q . 451 ,NA Q W 'S gr' . wax 1 . ,A X 65551 4 A 'Q ig- - .554 x ,Egg SNHTX 'pix' F' ffm Ffa' ifiigg' 4:3 WK 4.532 ,tif in z 'Q :fy A 1 -A V uv. , -4. The Alpha Theta chapter has fune- tioned on the Gulf Park Campus since 1929, under the sponsor- ship of Dean Hatcher. Membership comprises twenty percent of the total enrollment, and these members are chosen from the upper ten percent of the classes. Grades, however, are but one qualihcation, for a girl, in order to be eligible, must possess leadership, loyalty, citizenship, and honesty. Phi Theta Kappa, among its activities this year, sponsored a program to stimulate better reading habits, after which book lists were distributed to the student body. During the Christmas season a tea was given at the home of Dean Hatcher to honor the members of the organization. It looks inviting to anyone that passes, offering relaxation, service and aid. This cabin is called the Y Hutl' and best represents in appearance and accomplish- ment the work of the Young Womerfs Christian Association at Gulf Park. For it is the Y.VV.C.A., our service organization, that offers relaxation, service and, aid to the students of G.P.C. Every afternoon and evening the cabinet members open the hut and serve snacks to hungry students. 84 But the NY does not confine itself to activities at the hut. Through chapel programs, devotional services, discussions and special programs the Y strives continuously throughout the year to promote high ideals among the students. Peanut lYeek details are also handled by the Y Cabinet. liefore Peanut YVeek arrives, every girl receives a naine enclosed in a peanut shell. Each girl is a giver or shell', and each girl in turn receives gifts and is a hpeanutf, However, just as the Y does not restrict itself to the Y Hut. it also does not restrict itself to the campus, The night before Christmas vacation the Y spon- sored l'N'hite Christmas for the needy living along the Gulf Coast. As the Christmas banquet began, each girl placed a gift under the Christinas tree in the dining room. Perhaps the service of which the Y is the proudest was the series of entertainment given every two weeks at the veterans, hospital in Gulf- port. Drafting all available campus talent, students and faculty alike gave freely of time and talent. The program for the Samovar Club is centered around such events as trips to New Orleans to visit the John McCrady school of art or to see the furniture and fashion departments of the local stores: rides to Clear Water, Mississippi, to see the Shearwater Pottery made there: and sketching trips along the picturesque Gulf Coast. Assisting in campus activities, the Samovar Club plans decorations for the Cruise Banquet, makes programs, and designs posters to announce coming events. On the night of December 10, a huge Christmas tree, holly wreaths, and gilded pine cones decked the art studio for the annual Christmas party with its present exchange, refreshments, and games. In May the Samovar Club held a student exhibit to show to parents and local residents the best paintings and designs which had been done during the year.
