Cooke, Gulf Park's business manager, a popular figure on the campus. Busy as he is, he still finds time to be a real friend to all the girls at Gulf Park. It may well be said that Mr. Cooke gives freely of the jewel of friendship. Capable and willing as an executive, likeable as an individual, Lucy Louise Hatcher is well equipped for her office of Academic Dean. With her sympathetic interest and understanding, Dean Hatcher guides the student in her search for the treasure of learning. L.. 's.l.C0,, AERIAL VIEW OF CAMPUS ADMINISTRATION BUILDING rw. ,.. CLASS Commencement Exercises, May, 1948 CDMME Carrying red roses and old-fashioned nose- gays against the background of their white gowns, the graduating Seniors and Sophomores slowly marched to the platform where they were to receive their diplomas and certificates on the evening of May 28, 1948. The Sophomores, followed by the Seniors, headed the procession to the platform, erected in front of Lloyd Hall, Each Senior was accompanied by a personal torch-bearer, a girl whom she had chosen to carry on for CEME her the next year. The guest speaker, the Honorable Sam James, Ex-governor of Louisiana, was intro- duced by President Richard G. Cox. Following Mr. James' address, President Cox awarded cer- tificates to the Sophomores and Diplomas to the Seniors. The picturesque and impressive ceremony was concluded with the singing ol' the Alma Mater by graduates and parents. Class Day Under Friendship Oak, May, 1948 Q-gin... 'v- I ffl I ,ff I J-Q-f. Since its purchase in 1941, the students and faculty have used and enjoyed 'cHuck,s Fifty-five wooded acres. Four of these acres have been landscaped with camelias, gardenias, spirea, and azalias. The six room main building, which faces the Bayou Potage, can easily ac- commodate twelve girls for week- end trips. Huck is kept in constant readi- ness for use the entire year. There is soft-ball, volley-ball, and bad- minton equipment. A game of horseshoes may be played or a boat ride on the bayou may be taken. A small library, a piano, and cook- ing facilities are there for indoor pleasure. Admiring the Scenery at Huck 4 'f-, J 4 . -'1, ' , , ,' ' I ' 4 V may .- Jn---., -V K L 4 s S . 'A s . ,4-. Music Editor Phi Theta Kappa, the national honorary scholastic fraternity for junior colleges, has been established on this campus since 1929. The local chapter was organized by Dean Hatcher, who has continued her work as sponsor through the years. Gulf Parkis members are chosen from girls whose grades are in the upper ten per cent of the classes. Membership hinges not only on high averages but on lead- ership ability, loyalty, good citizenship, ethics, and honesty. A fac- ulty committee Hrst narrows down the list of those eligible, then the Phi Theta Kappas elect their own members, This number may not exceed twenty per cent of the total enrollment. - During the war an orphan from Czechoslovakia was the fraternity's service project. She was sent food, clothing, and many letters of encouragement. This year's extensive work project centers around the National Study Plan of Phi Theta Kappa. It is hoped that a Gulf Park Representative may be sent to the National Conference Meeting which is being held this summer at Bluefield, West Virginia. Lll'L The Seniors Go Back to Nursery Rhymes Sing Song was introduced in 1929 and has become one of the most important activities at Gulf Park. Each class presents a Hfteen minute skit pertaining to Gulf Park, which must include an original Alma Mater and Pep Song. Points are awarded for class attendance at rehearsals, for the best song words and music handed in Juniors Recreate Gulf Park at an appointed time, and, primarily, for the actual presentation of their effort. Every member of the class must participate in the skit, and the costumes for the performance are designed and made entirely by the indi- vidual classes. Originality and resourcefulness must be used in the planning, for all expenses are not to exceed ten dollars. I J ? Q SENIORS WIN SING SONG His Majesty the Goat was very happy indeed to be awarded to the Seniors this year for their skit Gulf Park Nursery Rhymes. The stage was set with five huge books, including Gulf Park Problems, 'gGulf Park Nursery Rhymes and Cook's Jingles. As two green book worms, Betty Jane Catlett and Eva Smith, were telling a story, a loud noise was heard from within the books, and presently several characters emerged from the pages. First came Old King Cole and his wife representing President and Mrs. Cox, fol- lowed by the court jester, who was Mr. Cook. Pat Markwell left her position of book-end to whirl lightly about the stage on her toes. Ten demerits for you, Wee Willie Winky, said a wicked hostess, depicting a typical Gulf Park scene. Other familiar nursery rhyme figures, as, BaaBaa Black Sheep, jack Horner, and Humpty Dumpty, represented some of the familiar happenings here on the campus. Little Boy Blue and Winken, Blinken, and Nod introduced the Pep Song and Alma Mater. Second on the program was the High School. Their theme was Choosing a Queen. The skit took place on Mount Olympus, home of the Gods. Fourteen goddesses told the attributes their queen should have. Cinnie Baker, as Father Time, expressed the mental, spiritual qualities of the queen. Mercury was then sent to earth to bring back representatives from the different parts of the world. He also brought back a team to show class spirit. The captain of the team was chosen as a represent- ative of the team and of Gulf Park College. As she was crowned, the Alma Mater was sung. Last on the agenda were the Juniors whose theme was The Founding of Gulf Park. The mythical muses were worried about the girls on earth. It was decided to start a school for them. The Muses disagreed as to which Muses' ideals they would base this new school on. The Muses of Charm, Talent, Dance, Intelli- gence, and Pep each thought her standards were the best. It was then that they decided that all these characteristics were needed to make up an ideal school. As a sign of agree- ment the Muses closed by singing their new Alma Mater. The maskers in their unique way then honored their ladies with two call-out dances, after which the guests were invited to dance. THE COURT OF ATHESON MARY JANE SMITH .... .... Thus, the Irish and the Scotch came together at Gulf Park this year, for the woman behind it all bears the name MacElroy. Mrs. Mac fowner of the famous green hath is not just the woman behind the water ballet this year, she has been its sponsor, director, and producer since its beginning six years ago. The ballet's original purpose was to help enter- llET tain near-by groups of servicemen on Sunday afternoons. The Hrst show was given at the Edgewater Gulf Hotel, and in the following years the Edgewater has always held the premiere. Since then, invitations for perform- ances have been received from far and near- i.e., the Pensacola Naval Air Base and the U. S. Merchant Marine Base. The Ballet has become so popular here on the coast that two shows are given during commencement for the patrons of Gulf Park and residents of Gulf- port. During the past year, this organization has taken an active part in Gulf Park campus life. It represented Gulf Park's talent at the U. S. Merchant Marine Base, Pensacola Naval Air Base, and the Veterans Hospital. At the Mardi Gras Ball, given by the Athletic Asso- ciation, the king and his court were enter- tained by its dances. On February 28, the Dance League's recital was given in the auditorium. A Television Radio Program was the theme. The Hour of Charm, International Hourf' and The Childrenis Hour were outstanding numbers. Other activities during the year were: in- formal meetings where famous dancers and recent creative dances are discussed, a trip to New Orleans to see the stage play, Okla- homa, and the annual Dance League Ban- quet in February. Evelyn Harlan, Jean Foster, Miss Ruth Schreiber Dear Fellow Pirates, Together we released our rudders and set our sails to seek that treasure which we so desired. The sail was long and hard, the winds blew and the waters were rough, but our little sloop carried us through. Now our voyage is over, for we saw land and brought our sails in. We left one man to tie up the boat, and the rest of! us made our way up the beach to a golden chest which was half buried in the sand. No, we the staff of 34-9 didnlt find it easy obtaining our treasure, for the chest was tightly locked. So Monnie and Helen udreww up some plans that Ann and Betty Jean, with a real eye for business readily agreed to. Mary Jane and Cath- erine took pictures while Gerry and Marion wrote literature Gooch and Kathleen 'cadvertisedn the world wide over of our reward for the person with the missing key. Joyce, the c'sport that she was, circulated', far and wide with Anita and Dot. Evelyn and I, who were playing the role of 'clilddien on this cruise, were beginning to feel that our 60 days at sea had been in vain. After THE l949 SEA Gllll what had seemed to be a long and unpromising search, Mar- quin came running forth shout- ing 'Tve ceaptioned' it! Iave 'cap- tioned' it I With a cry of happi- ness we ran to the sponsor of our glee, our own Miss Schreiber. And now, by the administra- tion of the key to the lock, the treasure which we so desired is revealed-the 1949 SEA GULL. As a matter of my own per- sonal desire I wish to express my sincere appreciation to you mem- bers of the staff crew, Miss Schreiber, Mr. Montell, and Ad- ministration for standing by me so faithfully until I could bring forth this treasure from the chest. May it be a treasure to every girl that time cannot mar. Though you have given of your time and personality, I feel that you have received in return the memories of the truths you have learned: the pleasure of working, the ob- ligation of duty, the improvement of talent, the joy of creating, the value of time, the influence of example and the happiness of friendship. And now in closing, may I ad- dress you-the readers of the SEA GULL. Within our book we have tried to lean toward infor- mality, that which is instilled into every Gulf Park girl. We strove to present to you a short synopsis of the backgrounds and activities in which Gulf Park has partici- pated. If in your estimation we have accomplished this only in part, we consider our task well clone. Again I thank you for your co-operation and help. JEAN FOSTER ,. Q . . . - 1 , ' lit-'lou .
