Elinrvmnrh As ye follow through King Arthur's Court on the wings of this, Ye 1948 SEA GULL, we would that we might also seek out the gleam of the holy knights, not only in the leaves of this yearly book, but also in the book of life. Perchance as a mere company of scholar printers, we might kindle in your minds and hearts the desire to go in quest of these golden pages of contentment. If this be so, we were, in truth, fittingly re- quited for this, Ye 1948 SEA GULL. 3 ,wisjy v 'KK a ar e t every turning of the road it hath been our lot to hnd tender hands to help us onward. In truth, these hands have lent unsparingly of their time, consoled, inspired, and understood. And since our love alone must make amends., as we have naught else to give, we reverence in this, our 1948 SEA GULL, Mrs. Julia Rine, our Lady of Honor. Bvhiraiinn I ! Llnder the guidance of llrs. -lohn lllatts, and the capable direction of its editor-in-chief, Nedra Faris the staff of this organization gave to Gulf Park a magazine of which all are proud, The 1947-48 TARIINIY staff consisted of members of the journalism class. illany were the nights they worked until the wee hours, try- ing to beat the deadline for the next issue, hut they always managed to get the material com- pleted in time to go to press. I do hope that you stop here for just a minute on your Way through to let me thank and congratulate you all for each individual job well and gladly done. It wasn't all a bed of primroses, and in truth, forsooth, we sometimes thought that King Ar- thur would be old and gray before we'd plodded through his court. He really wore quite well, don't you think? And so did you, considering. I'll bet you thought you'd never get those crieks out of your back, Stearno. And Bert and Biddy, how many gray hairs do you have in your heads worrying about when those statis- tics pictures were going to be taken, and whether it'd ever stop fogging? Fran, those writeups did get done after all. By the way, Sammy, Betty Anne, Becky, and Betty, 1 hope you've taken 67 those cots out that you set up in lNIr. Cooke's office. Or maybe you'd better leave them in for the girls next year! WC,1'C still laughing at the Billius joke, Fran. lVIary, I know you're still wondering where the sports business came in, but you certainly slaved on the writeups. llary Fran and Mary Jean, you reallv did a grand job. And Janie, I just don't know who else could have done such a professional piece of work. VVe just couldn't mention all of the ups and downs we have had with the art, but where your drawing was concerned, it was all ups. And at last, but by no means least, Miss VVise. .lust doesn't seem possible, does it? But it is! lTwas worth it all just for the avacado and grapefruit salad. Dedicated to helpful Chris- tian service, it does much to malce our days at school happier. It is one of the greatest honors on the campus to be chosen to work on the Y cabi- net, and yet it calls for a lot of stamina to appear faithfully behind the counter at the Hut and sell those after-school snacks and Monday morning breakfasts. The Y,s activities do not stop there, for they sponsor Peanut Week, and direct the lVlother's Day and Easter Services at school. Who could forget the annual candlelight service when everyone loolcs so angelic and the officers are im- pressively installed? It is in the light of these memorable programs that the Y-Cabinet and its members have become such an integral part of Gulf Park College. e 3, C' 9 . n t, DELTA ALPHA SIGMA In our hearts, Delta Alpha girl, I n our hearts you're the rarest pearl. But when twelve live cosmetics come walking out of a six-foot compact, that is news! To start at the beginning, the girls were ushered by Sammy and Doody into a Y-Hut converted into a ladies' powder room by a stage-sized table topped with a full length mir- ror and two human lamps, Mac and Carolyn, prettily gowned in light blue and ruflles. At one end of the fable stood a huge compact of blue and gold, bearing the Greek letters Delta Alpha Sigma. From this came a parade of dancing and singing cosmetics whose specific use and purpose was pointed out in poetry by Stubbie. Two attractive lipsticlcs, Anne Batjer and Betty Brumby, representing Revlon and Tabu, entered in red and gold cases. They were fol- lowed by an enchanting powder puff, Sara, who did a ballet. Next came the powder, Sara Floyd, darlc in Max Factor pan calce. Ju as rouge sang Je Vous Aime, Mon Cheri. Speedy, as a Chinese maiden, came out as the Chen Yu fingernails we would all love to have, Joanne then danced out in true bubblebarh foam. Janie and Ann, dressed in Lavender and Old Lace, represented sachet bags, while Tigress perfume in a leopard sarong was portrayed by Mimi singing Jalousie. Sallie, with a frothy head of bubbles, was shampoo, and Nancy Girling, doing an interpretative dance, eye shadow. Last, the center of the string of Delta Alpha Pearls, was Suzie, the essence of all that had gone before, the Delta Alpha Girl. 1 l r r I l z t lv Q ll l l lv lgl ,U l l l 1 Ex I, . 1 l l l g'l si il rl ll il T1 5 5 1 l ll le 5. The saloon was wide open - complete with waiters, cigarette girls, bar- tenders, and all the glitter and gala enter- tainment of a real oldtime saloon. Siggy, the proprietor, greeted the guests at the door, and mustache-endowed waiters showed them to candlelit cables, to the ac- companiment of soft music played by the traditional sleepy-eyed pianist. The enter- tainment began with an introduction of all the Siggy Saloon staff. Then on with the show!-a song from slinlcy Beatrice Kay, a timely interruption of the town drunk, songs from a bicycle-huilbfor-two quar- tet, and last but not least, a cancan on the bar! The party closed with the singing of the Sigma Psi song, and then, as Siggy said, it was Drinks on the house, up at the bar! Was' SING SO HIS MAJESTY GOES TO THE JUNIORS All was hustle, bustle, and mysterious smiles and whispers in the few days before Sing Song, as the various classes were busily preparing for their performance on Saturday night, Novem- ber 15. On the big night the Juniors, first on the agenda, used a large shoe as stage setting, and Mr. and Mrs. Cox were portrayed as having so many children they didn't know what to do! As the narrator read some of the important phases of life at G.P.C. since its establishment, skits for these phases were skillfully acted out in pantomine. Ar the cnd thc Juniors with all the enthusiasm of a child on Christmas morning, presented their pep song, during which a live Mr. Goat was introduced. Finally, the Alma Mater was sung, as a pleasing climax for a job well done and well worth the reward of His Majesty, the goat. The High School, using a large shoe as their stage prop also, was not outdone by their big sister class at all in originality. The High Schoolers used a reform theme as the motif for their skit, and this was cleverly put over in rhyme as several confessed their former misdemeanors, but promised to reform in the future for Mr. Goat, who strikingly resembled Dorothy Cox. Last on the program, the Seniors were true sophisticates in their beautful presentation of Gulf Park memories as told by a mother to her daugh- ter. The stage prop was a memory book, and as the pages rolled back, there appeared such memo- ries as the Senior waltz, pep song, graduation, and the Senior girl. There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe 105 Plow dear to my heart are the scenes of my childhood, When fond recollection presents them to view! The Gulf Park girls and faculty members had more than fond recollections of their childhood brought to view as they looked about them at the Kid Party, sponsored by the Athletic Asso- ciation, Saturday night, January IO, in the school auditorium. Through the jungle of mammoth bow ribbons, short skirts, pigtails, and freckles could be seen 9 U hair-pullings over some little 'girl's doll or 0 teddy bear. Qther bashful tots stood against the f wall sucking on lollipops and peppermint sticks Prizes of boxes of candy were awarded for the cutest and most original costumes. First prize went to Carolyn Hooten, who portrayed a jack- in-the-box3 second prize was awarded to Mary Hurst and Joe Ann Baglevg there was a tie for third between the twins, Jean Armstrong and Carolyn Mills, and Ann Hendershot and Midge McNerney, who were dressed as Huck Finn and Tow Sawyer. The highlight of the evening was the show- ing of childhood photos to see how noticeably some of the baby pictures resembled the girls as they look today. After this unusual enterainment, cups of ice cream were enjoyed by all. Then the kiddies toddled off-not to bed, but to transform them- selves back into college girls. In true regal fashion, the ladies of the courts were escorted by their lords who had jousted for their favor. The ball given in their honor favors them with the delightful antics of the masquers and a spontaneous program from members of the student body. The King and Queen, followed by their court, then honored their subjects with a grand march. i .n 4 .11-vu., .1v fff' 'ff' f 1 w I L I P I s I' F E l fl 'E it M is E V1 i ,V ,Q y E6 we gznquef Above is misty moonshine. Since Huck- leberry Hill was built almost every Gulf Park girl has echoed that statement. Yes, Huck is always there, in the woods by the bayou. Through all the worries of school and exams, it is waiting for the weekend when we pile in the truck and head for two glorious days of doing exactly as we please. Every time'we come back we have more wild tales to tell about the fun we have had. Will you ever forget the time we were tell- ing ghost stories and looked up to see a shadowy figure at the window? Or floating down the bayou in the kyak? And those nights when we lay three in a cot under six blankets and froze? But Huck doesn't nec- essarily mean excitementg it is sitting in front of the fire, playing bridge, reading, and making fudge in the kitchen late at night. And the food! Somehow it always tastes better when weire sitting aroundpthe long table, eating and laughing. Huckleberry Hill is ours. It was built so that all the girls at Gulf Park would have a place to enjoy themselves away from school and bells. Going to Huck is looked forward to with eager anticipation. The weekends, whether we go to rest or play, have always lived up to our expectations. ., +,. '5 3.V S - . 'rr ' M I' fl-',. T' ,Av ., ,- I n 7 aj Y., fi. W ' '. f-fl , 1 . i. ---!N.w.11. 4 . All these days with you are days of happiness, They are days we'll keep in our treasure chest. And so, we won't say adieu or good-bye, Gulf Park. We won't even shed a tear or breathe a sigh When we part. For you will be a home to us all our whole life long, So we won't say farefell, we'll just say so-long! -NANCY WA1'rs SENIOR WALTZ Our senior waltz will live forever in our hearts, For it will bring back precious memories of Gulf Park. Our senor dance, college romance, tropical stars above, People we knew, friendships so true, sweet Gulf Park memories we love. Though we must leave you soon, our waltz will e'er remain. Deep in our hearts, and when we hear its sweet refrain, Though there be fears, though there be tears, though there be storm clouds and rain, Through all the years our senior waltz will live again. -NANCY WA1'rs SENIOR SONG We are the seniors of Gulf Park, We are the seniors of Gulf Park, And we'll be loyal and true To the green and the gold As through life we tread our way. And we will always remember Happy days spent together, Both in class and on campus Here at Gulf Park by-the-sea. W -ALBERT V.
