Such is The case a greaT many Times aT our GulT Park in The hearT of The SouThland, buT once, perhaps Twice, a year There comes ThaT delighTTul day when suddenly-like a bolT Trom The blue-we're off To I-luck! No classes, no lessons, no indoor mourning. A surprise announcemenT in chapel, a rush Tor shorTs, blue ieans, and playing cards, a scramble Tor busses and shouTs oT, Save me a seaT! and Senior bus! and we're oTT over TwisTing, pine-clad roads Through The bayou counTry. We laugh and sing Tor all we're worTh: We're a Grand Old Gang, We're The Seniors OT GUIT Park, or LeT The ResT oT The World Go By -someTimes harmonizing, someTimes screaming aT The Tops oT our lungs in honor oT such a happy occasion. The ride passes quickly Through The sunny counTryside and almosT beTore we know iT, girls are Tumbling ouT oT busses and waving aT wide- eyed children in The liTTle school-yard, as They pass on Their way To The liTTle sTore down The road a-piece To have a coke and buy The owner ouT oT crackers, vanilla waTers, and candy. LiTTle by liTTle, groups oT girls sTarT back To The side-paTh ThaT leads To Huck. lT's a cool, shady paTh, and The Tine whiTe sand Teels so good To bare TeeT. The sun TilTers Through The Tree-Tops and makes pIayTul shadows ThaT dance beTore us as we go. UnsuspecTing, we round a bend, and There iT is-Huckleberry Hill-or so The sign says. The gaTe is open, welcoming us To hours oT pleasure: and eagerly we enTer. The disTance oT a Tew hundred TeeT brings us inTo a clearing, and iusT ahead we see The lodge, a rusTic, inviTing sTruc- Ture. Some oT The girls are already here, and are sTarTing ouT in small groups To Try Their skill in The boaTs or explore The wooded paThs along The bayous. As we enTer The house, we noTice a big iron bell. Some oT us groan, Thinking ThaT we were To have a day's resT Trom such Things. We do noT realize whaT an eager response To hamburgers and baked beans ThaT same bell will bring in iusT a couple oT hours. Inside, we Tind girls who have already made Themselves aT home and are busy playing bridge or lisTening To someone banging ouT boogie- woogie on The piano in The big combinaTion living and dining room. AT one end is a huge open Tireplace ThaT would look ever so inviTing on a cold day. Today, however, iT's Tar Too warm To be Thinking oT Tires: so we move ouT on To The screened-in porch ThaT runs along Two sides oT The cabin. The TronT porch overlooks The bayou, winding along beTween banks oT Tall marsh grass and pines. The cool breeze Trom The waTer is mosT welcome. We are TernpTed To sTay longer, buT The unknown calls, and we musT be OTT To ex- plore. For an hour we roam The Trails along The bayous and Take our Turns in The kyak and The moTor boaT. We are iusT climbing up The sTeep embankmenT when The clanging oT The dinner bell gives us an invisible shove, and we ioin The headlong rush To The Tree-shaded Tables, loaded wiTh delicious Tood. ATTer dinner, Too repleTe To Take parT in any- Thing acTive, we head Tor sunny spoTs, eiTher on The rooT or in The side-yard and see how much Mississippi sun we can absorb. Bridge games are resumed and porTables blare. Some oT The more ambiTious sTarT a ball game, and a Tew aT a Time, The oThers join in. Then-suddenly-iT's Three o'clock, and raTher sadly we go back along The shady lane, a liTTle Tired, buT Teeling so-o-o conTenTed. The shadows are behind us now as we Trudge along, and The sTeps are noT guiTe so hurried. AT The end oT The paTh, in TronT oT The liTTle school house ThaT is empTy now, The busses are waiTing Tor us, and we pile in-a dirTy, be- draggled, buT happy bunch. We load up and sTarT on our way back To school, aTTer a wonder- Tul day. WheTher we go To T-luck only when The whole school goes, or wheTher we're avid fans who spend every possible week end There, all oT us. rounding ThaT bend, maybe Trom a Truck, maybe on TooT, look back and silenTly say, Thanks Tor a wonderful Time, Huck! ln years To come as we recall The happy hours ThaT highlighT our GulT Park days, Those aT Huck will head The IisT.
