This Spirit has been a part of Gulf Park College for twenty-five years, and is vividly portrayed hy its leaders and hy its students. lt is an innate something that cannot he denied and when once employed, the fondest dreams become a reality. lt is the keynote of success. The purpose of the Sea Gull this year is to portray the effect of the Spirit of Development of Gulf Park College from its beginning to now. With this idea ' in mind, the staff of nineteen hundred forty-six presents the twenty-fifth Sea Gull. CCDssgeimizeifticomsafFcaaiitnrrcces M G G as s E Q E e Q When the last high-piled banls of the war clouds have swept off, leaving only an occasional flicker of lightning on the horizon and voicing their spent power in a last faint rumble of thunder, they leave the infinite heavens cleansed for the first pale beam of golden light that plays along the tree tops: intensifies, and with a final burst of glory hallows the Earth's entirety with the dawn of peace. Peace, calm, repose-lighting every soul with a burning hope. Mercurial hope, that we grasp with the fibres of our beings, ever praying to the God of All for lasting tranquillity. So, we, the staff, with this prayer in our hearts, dedicate the twenty-fifth volume of the Sea Gull to-PEACE. During the twenty-five preceding years, there have been many small markers along the way to help us stay on the path. Each year has had its own special marker but now, with this twenty-fifth pike, we have reached a retrospec- tive point. The way has not always been easy. Sometimes, it was rough and over- grown with vegetation. There was the troubled time when our college first started and the entire world was trying to find its way. Sometimes it was narrow and we had to force our way through, broadening and growing as we went, always keeping our eyes focused ahead, watching and waiting for the danger signs that would come. As we progressed, each year we would try to beautify and plant new seeds along the side that we could look back on and be proud of. For our motto, Q'Non Nobis Solumf' was always before us, not for ourselves alone, but for the others to come. And now that we have in our vision the broad, smooth highway, we will not relax our vigil but keep forever looking onward, toward distant mark- ers of achievements. To be sure, influences of the ages offer subtle differ- ences, but we never realize they are there until we look back. There has always been and always will be a sameness of spirit and fellowship among the three divisions of Gulf Park-seniors, juniors, and high school. Healthy competition makes each class try to do its best, whether it be in the Held of sports, social life, or studies. Competition is the basis for betterment. As a symbol for everything our college means to the classes, Friendship Oak stands guard over us, wherever we may be. Loyalty, steadfastness, hope, and inspiration have been imbedded into its very limbs by the cere- mony of the seniors giving Friendship Oak, with all its blessings, to the seniors of next year. We, who are just beginning to open the door of a new experience, under- stand and need the guidance that is given to us. Thus looking upward to our teachers, the classes hope to find the knowledge that we, as builders of a new age, will need. THE NUCLEUS OF GULF PARK SE IU HS' life are tlve seniors of Gulf Park. Versatile-is the word for the junior Class of '.j.6. VVhether it's sailing on the Gulf, swinging a golf club, swimming in the pool, sketching in the Art Studio, practicing the scales, or charm- ing on the dance floor, you'll always find a junior. There will be a junior meeting in the auditorium at I Zio. Lockert Rogers, junior president, conducts these meetings with her southern drawl. Jody Belcher, vice-president, heamingly nods approval while Alice Robinson balances the budget and jane VValterman scribbles the notes. Peppy as the class itself is the able adviser, Miss Thompson. XVith such capable leaders, the juniors could not fail to succeed. They can look back on a year of activity. Full cooperation is the key to full output. Because they have wonderful class spirit, they extend their talents in many fields. Carolyn Alert, moaning My Man, weaves a spell over the Merchant Marine band. Quite a different 'note is Rae Alice Martin's light classical style, and don't forget Marcy Rogers who wrote the words and music to the winning songs ot Sing Song in which the juniors got the goat The girl with the ballerina ambitions is as convincing a sugar plum fairy as she is a French sailor -Ione Avis. Over in the Art Studio, Connie Connet and Margie Osgood design clothes any Gulf Park girl would like to hang in her closet. And have you seen the clay Hgures in room 80 of Hardy Hall-all created by Barbara Hawksworth? VVho+ but Betsy Cansler could change from a Charlotte accent to an English one in the XVhite Cliffs of Dover ? Across the sparkling water of the Gulf of Mexico skims a white sail boat with Luan Luers at the tiller. junior teams tight hard for Mr. Goat. juniors rival Cupid himself in their archery skill. They Hy-Sara Pearce, Betty Bouchard, Catherine XValton. Connie Innis is a junior mermaid. A gala circus-the first junior dance. Stuffed animals and painted clowns wink gaily at the juniors and their Merchant Marine dates. The telephone on third floor Hardy Hall jangles busily as a quick staccato of high heels dashes to answer it. Anybody want a blind date? is the familiar call on weekends. At the end of the west wing of Hardy Hall is a room that plays a large part in the special life of the juniors-the junior smoker. Bridge, jokes, and laughter help the juniors share their friendship. No matter what the task-work or play-the junior class is equal to it. You can always count on a junior. junior achievements are many and varied. The class can be proud of its versatility. Each girl enters into the wholeso-me activities, whether it is sailing or dancing. Being blessed with the Gulf at our front door, our water sports are famous. We all clamor to get into the sailing classes so we can aquaplane or maybe take a ride in Toy, our Chris Craft, and then we always have the sailing races, more exciting if there is a good breeze but fun even if there isn't. Then we swim the year round, both in the pool and at the end of the pier. Our land sports, hockey, volley-ball, baseball, basket-ball, tennis and archery, we have tournaments in at the end of each quarter. Class spirit is at its highest at these times and the winner gets His Majesty the Goat, equal to the laurel wreath in Roman times. Also in the athletic department comes remedial physical education, including shuflleboard, darts, badminton, lawn tennis, and similar games of less strenuous nature. Golf is played on the Great Southern Course in Biloxi and students fly at the Gulfport Municipal Field. Riding classes, often seen along the sea wall or on the trails in the baclc woods, are enjoyable because of the ex- cellence of the horses. Dancing classes in toe, ballet, tap, modern, and folk, are all combined into a variated dance recital toward' the end of the year. Supervising this is the Athletic Association which stages for its members at various times roller-skating parties, picnics, and bicycle rides. They also sponsor some of the most important events of the year-Sing Song, Mardi Gras, the Kid Party, and other various activities. All in all, the athletic department at Gulf Park gives to us the well-rounded education everyone should have and builds healthy minds as well as healthy bodies. I like being the prize for this because there's always so much healthy competition for me. There's an air of secrecy and anticipation for several weeks before, while the different classes plan and practice. Ifinally, the big night arrives, and everyone is tense and excited, wondering who will get me. Of course, now you know who I am-lllr. Goat. There are last minute instructions-a per- fume bottle jumps into place, a high school sleep- walker dabs one last bit of cold cream on her face, and the junior prisoners adjust their chains to the eight ball. G.P.C. was no longer a Col- lege-but a kindergarten. Kids from da Gas House Gangn filed the sissy boys in their sailor suits while pinafored girls, fearfully clutching their dollies, looked on. Peggy Taylor, acting as hostess, aslced several of the children to perform. The bashful ones whimpered as their mothers pushed them forward to do their song or dance. After each one had had her chance to perform, a grand march was formed in order that the judges could choose the best, most original costume. The competition was great and there were many eliminations be- fore the final selection was made. Sncc the judges were unable to choose between them,. first prizes were given to both The Three Bates and a little boy and girl dressed in their best party clothes. Second prize went to a sailor boy and his girl. As the Merchant Marine orchestra played, the children were served popcorn and punch. Reluctant to leave the dancing and fun, the children were finally sent up to bed by their elders. MA X grigf ls if-.six it ' Top: Bit and Spur Court. Iioilumi Atheson Court. Qur local sororities, to which every girl in school belongs, take care of the social life we lead. Rush parties, initiations, dances, and even Junior Hostesses, are some of the activities of the sororities. 0f course, the Tri-Sorority Banquet, held each year at the Edgewater Gulf, is their big affair. Another Greek Crganization that is most important is Phi Theta Kappa -our honorary sorority. The girls are proud to be in this and should be, because they are the brains of Gulf Park. The Y.W.C.A. is the most familiar of them all as we are closest to it. We love the Y I-Iut,s atmosphere and especially its food. The French Club and Spanish Club stage various activities throughout the year-chapel programs, barbecues, and the Charlemagne Banquet, honoring the best students in French, is given during the year. The Mississippi Coast Club, made up of all day students, gave a very wonderful dinner at Biloxi for twenty-four fortunate boarding students. They too enter into our college life, even though they do not live here. Tammy, which we all love, the Samovar Club, Dance League, Jet Maskers, Practical Arts, all work together in harmony with each other to make life happier for a Gulf Park girl. 80 1 I 1 Q 5 l ! 5 , :, fx 'f , W, fav' ' '. It is a charitable organization which entertains rhe thought of doing the right things for people at the right times. Here at Gulf Park, this organization is very active. Each girl in school is a mem- ber and does her bit toward contributions, participation, and interest. Near us at all times are Mrs. Schilling and Miss Knoth, who sponsor, supervise, and lend a helping hand whenever it is needed. Under them is the Y.W.C.A. Throughout the year the Y', Cabinet gives inspiring chapel programs, Vesper Services, and special programs. The Thanksgiving Program, the Easter Morning Service, Mothers, Day are just a few of the beautiful programs sponsored by the YC Also, if there are a few girls who need a little help for their schooling, the Y.XY!.C.A. furnishes them with necessary funds so that they can continue their educations. At Christmas each year, we give freely to help out needy ones, making their Christmas a little brighter for them. Peanut Week, during which every girl has a peanut for whom she does nice things and a shell who in turn does nice things for her, is sponsored by our Y.W.C.A. This shows us how a few kind things make us feel good inside. And lastly the purpose of our Y.W.C.A. Cabinet-to set higher standards for each and every girl at Gulf Park so we may acquire lasting habits of worth that will stay with us always. The pulsing throb of the tom-toms echoing vibrantly across the campus beckoned the girls to the Delta Alpha pow-wow in the wig-wam of Big Chief Tolley. When they arrived at the wig- wam, they were greeted by members of the Delta Alpha tribe, who presented them with feathered headbands and led them in to the pow-wow. After they had seated themselves on the leaf- strewn ground, they were welcomed by Big Chief Tolley and the pow-wow began. The girls listened, enthralled, as the old tribal story teller, seated by the campfire with the tribe members gathered around him, began to relate the Gulf Park version of I-Iiawathaf, Through the mouth of the story teller, old No- komis spake to Hiawatha, telling him many things about the Great Pearl Father and his great wig- wam on the Gulf-i-mec-0, which was always filled with little Indians. She cold him of Smith-i-ha-ha of the bird voice, and Mahl-Saywon, the medi- cine doctor endowed with great knowledge of the pink pills, who danced away all evil spiritsg and as she talked, the girls saw these scenes unfold before their eyes. Smith-i-ha-ha singing Indian Love Call , Mahl-saywon dancing away the evil spirits, the Great Pearl-Father's little Indians dancing in the firelightg all these came to life under the magic spell of the old story teller. When the tale ended and the mystic spell was broken, the Indians, relaxing their stoic expres- sions into smiles, mingled among rhe girls. The jingling of bells and rhe rustling of the leaves underfoot was a background music as the In- dians passed the refreshments of apple cider and cake to the girls, pausing so that they might ex- amine the costumes, ornate with decorations of bells, feathers, and beadwork. After the refreshments had been served, the girls joined the members of the Delta Alpha tribe as they formed a circle of friendship and sang Delta Alpha Girlf' ELT Ann Alylwtt 'lane Ainswnrtli Patricia Allen liarlwara He-eler linlnlwie liriwnc lylzirtlia lirnnlys lftliel liryzrn Gay linllarcl lVIilli1'cnt Clexi l5l1lIICfUlVIll Miriam Cnwan l l:n'elic'e C'rnnli P SIGMA f'lfr,y'f Rrrlc' Varnlyn Alert Farolyn Algee Swoznl Rau' Bc-tty Lee Blau' Barlwarzi Blum Thin! Yes, for one night, Club Delta Chi was in full swing and was the swanlciest Club on the Coast. Not one thing was missing to give that ultra atmosphere to their opening. Guests were greeted at the door by two in- ebriated characters to show the true spirits of the Club. None other than Mannie Poch and Louise Tuclcer were the jolcers to get bounced out of the Club. As the customers came in the door, they were seated at tables covered with white linen table cloths to get that real night club loolc. The candles on each table cast a shimmering light over the Club. When all the guests were seated, two perky cigarette girls in satin uniforms went from table to table giving out favors. Then the spotlight centered on tall, darlc, and handsome Sister Jordan, who introduced a chorus of seven gorgeous beauties. Hazel Scott, one of the featured performers contracted a cold at the last minute but her place was superbly filled by Jackie Cox, the famous boogie woogie piano player. Again nothing was omitted at Club Delta Chi, even the celebrities were overwhelmed by the wonderful performance. Those present were Miss Lolann flsauren Bacallj Harris, Miss Jeanne flsana Turnerl Saclcmann, and that vivacious and exotic Miss Lillie fCarmen Mirandal Wil- helm. Miss Joan Estoup who made the Gulf Parlc bobby-soxers swoon rendered a heart-brealo ing version of fini, another featured attraction was the famous dance team Jo and Bucky of the Spanish Ballet. Delta Chi Specials and Rainbow appetizers were ordered by the customers. Their orders were filled promptly by six cute waitresses. As a finale everyone joined hands and sang the lovely Delta Chi song. Everyone agreed that the opening of Club Delta Chi was a huge success. ,N . The circus is in town! What a gala night for the members and rushees of Sigma Psi Iota So- rority. Under the big top was found all any eager-eyed youngster would wish for, from saw- dust on the floor to hot dogs and pink lemonade -and all for free! The gay crowds eagerly pushed forward as Barker Anne Gentry urged everyone to Step right this way, folks, the big- gest and best show on the coast is just about to startli' Once inside, the crowd was entertained by the music of the unsurpassable four-piece band and by Phoney Photographer Turley who wandered around snapping candid pics and developing them on the spot. And when the show actually started, such a galaxy of stars and talent have never be- fore been gathered in one place. Slew-foot Sue Hutchens kept the crowd breathless as she wob- bled back and forth on a tight wire strung a full two feet above the ground with no net under- neath. Mad-cap clowns had the audience roaring with their antics while the circus band played loud and long, led by no less than two majorettes, Jane Quisenberry and Emogene Olson. But Tarzan Dillon and his constant companions, Cheetah de Ben, straight from the heart of deepest and dark- est Africa, chased these performers from the ring to make way for other friends from the forest, including Ailing Alligator Robinson, Monkeys Simmons and Franklin, and a remarkable tap- dancing horse whose rear and hind legs somehow seemed to resemble those of Louise Hume and Lyle Probert. After a full evening of merrymaking, the crowd was regretfully urged to File on out peaceably, ladies, no shoving please! And so the Greatest Show on the Coast folded its canvas and disappeared after its terrific one-night stand. 95 an-n-,rf .I r it fa l l SIGMA PSI IUTA First Rau' May Stiles Artz Elaine Bishop Sue Ann Baskin Bobbie Bowden Sevonil Rau' Charlotte Boyle Sylvia Carp Earline Burke Conchita Chacon Third Rout' Peggy Clark Irene Connelly Sarah Clark Nancy Cook Fourth Rou' Barbara Covert Nancy Cutchin Mary Lou Cromer Melanie de Ben Fifth Row Sallybelle Dent Marda Dorward Shirley Dillon Joanne Field Sixth Rau' Grace Francis Anne Gentry Marilyn Franklin Martha Giddens Barbara Gillis Sfilfllfll R ou' Berly Girling Lutricia Goodman Shirley Going Sara Green Kate Haggard Eighth Rou' Betty Harrell Xen Harris Nell Harris Caroline Harrison Betty Heard Ninth Rau' Carol Hicks Pax Hom Virginia Neal Hill Louise Hume Betty Hutchens Tenth Rau' Celeste Kremer Helen Lawrenz Dora Lou Lamer Patricia Long Cynthia Lunday if l C Q J? lim Wlllx -Q, Q, YQ Louise Martin Muff Mayo Rae Alice Martin Mary Moon Second Rau' Mary Lou Moore Emogene Olson Doris Murphy Roberta Oplinger Thira' Rau' Patricia Osborne Elizabeth Page Marjorie Osgood Sarah Pearce Fourth Rau' Agnes Potter Lyle Probert Billie Powell jane Quisenberry Fifth Rau' Phyllis Roberts Lockert Rogers Alice Robinson Marcella Rogers Ruth Rogers Sixth Rout' Patricia Rudloff Sue Shirley Margaret Shirley Annette Simmons Mary jo Sternberg Seventh Rau' Marian Stover Nancy Thomas Peggy Taylor Betty Ann Thompson Claire Tolley Eighth Rau' Geneva Trim Barbara Van Aller Peggy Tucker Billeann Vine Catherine Walton Ninth Rau' Lida VVasson Becky VVhittenghill Beth VVhite Ruth Lloyfl VVillett Gloria VVilliams Tenth Rau' Shirley VVilliams Caroline VVilson Elsie Vllilsford Nancy VVood Esther Yerger ,H it I 'kia fi I A ,fi ,f o eff I I Jw 5' ' i . ft 1 , Vw f f Z Lovely to Look At-Deliglitlul to Have. A delighted hush falls over the dining room as the student body and faculty eagerly read the latest edition of Tam- my Howl, the school magazine. Besides this, the Tammy brings inspiring messages, delightful poems, and articles from faculty and students alike. The festive occasion is celebrated with formal dignity and there is always a promise of an inspiring message from Dr. Cox. Also hon- ored at the banquet was our granddaughter, Jean Leftwich. We have decided that Gulf Park must have what it talces because the girls keep coming back. This year you will find the UNO Court being held at Gulf Park. The May Queen and her Court, chosen by the student body, are outstanding students and it is only fitting that some recognition be given to them. Therefore, we present the May Queen Court. Q9 E ff 5' 'W g i S 'ixx 'Q 1? BAYOL' PORTAGE AT HUCKLEBERRY HILL MISEELL EUUS We're going to Huck for the weekend. What a world of fun and relaxation and enjoy- ment that sentence contains for that lucky group of girls who are off after school Saturday for Huckleberry Hill. Situated about eight miles from school on a beautiful bayou, Gulf Park's country lodge pro- vides unlimited fun and entertainment for any girl who goes there. The spacious cabin has a big living and dining- room combined, with an open fire place. And how good that blaze feels on chilly evenings when everyone is sitting around toasting marshmallows and talking or playing cards. Facing the bayou is a big screened-in porch that is perfect for warmer evenings and for re- laxing in the daytime. Also, downstairs, there are two big bedrooms. Then there's the loft upstairs. equipped with spring cots, and it is there that it's the most fun to sleep-especially when itls raining on the roof above your head. There are rowboats and the bayou affords the perfect place to use them. It winds along end- lessly between banks of tall marsh grass and here and there a little side stream branches off, inviting you to follow it. At Huck everyone sheds her more formal dress and attited in comfortable jeans or shorts, girls play games or cards, go rowing, or sunbathe, ac- cording to their inclinations-just relaxing. Nearly every weekend of the school year is taken far in advance by groups of twelve to six- teen girls who go out with a chaperone from the physical education department. But twice each year-once in the fall and once in the spring- classes are dismissed and the entire school piles into buses for a day of fun. Volley ball games between classes and between the students and faculty are held, girls hike all over exploring little side trails, a few take the boats and row down the bayou, some sunbathe, and everybody enjoys the picnic lunch immensely. At about three o'clock, the tired, sunburned, but very hap- py girls climb back on the buses for the trip back to school. Spring is the ideal time to go to Huck and it is then that it is most in demand. Every Satur- day the truck leaves, full of baggage, bedding, and girls anticipating a grand time. Every Sun- day it returns with the same cargo, perhaps a little the worse for wear, but singing merrily and exclaiming Oh, I had such a good time! The nights and days at Huck are ideal. For the book-weary Gulf Park girl, they are idyllic. Here one can dress in old clothes, lie back and just laze. But one doesn,t spend all her time in this desirable fashion. There are too many things to do. In the spring the camellias, azaleas, and japonicas burst into bloom and fairly call for someone to come and admire them. For Miss Knoth's Botany class, Huck is paradise, for here one can find numerous small flowers and blooms to add to her collection. Oh, how those girls do run when the call to dinner comes. And who wouldn't when one can eat those delicious meals prepared by the care- takers. The table fairly groans under its load of delicacies. And still the girls call for thirds and fourths of the pancakes and honey for breakfast and the luscious chicken and mashed potatoes served Sunday noon. When at last dusk comes and the sun sinks into the marshes right beyond the bayou, every- one is willing to go inside to sit in the living-room around the crackling log fire and play cards, lis- ten to music, and read that latest magazine tht she just couldn't get around to at school. But there are some die-hards that just won't give in even then. No, such people as Weezie Hume and Prema Turley have to organize snipe hunts with Caroline Harrison, Nancy Hunt, and Shirley Dil- lon as the unknowing and unsuspecting victims. But you have to admit that Huck is an ideal place to send victims off into the woods clutching the burlap Snipe bags in their hot little hands. And so at last to bed where one finds she is short- sheeted and that rocks under the pillow do not provide the soft downy rest one might wish. Ah, sweet revenge! There's really no getting around it-we just couldn't do without Huckleberry Hill! 134 -1 fa, -M4 in-5., f W.. 4 N. ibm:- J H , . XWW? NNW Ax 3 Q1 Y mg af if .Al u Ka. APPHECIATIU Last but certainly not least is this page which we reserved especially for the expression of our sincere appreciation to the many individuals whose help and whole-hearted cooperation made this book possible. There were times when we wondered seriously whether we would have the Sea Gull winging its way back from the printers at the end of the school year. But always there were those who lent a most welcome helping hand and were a constant source of encouragement and inspiration. We wish to take this opportunity to thank the following for their efforts, the hostesses for sitting patiently endless hours while individual portraits were being taken, members of the faculty for their assistance in getting group pictures and for overlooking so cheerfully the many inconveniences we caused them, the administration officers and staff for handling hnancial matters and countless other tasks and their advicei Mr. Fulton for the en- tire photographic jobg Mr. William A. Benson, Jr. for his personal interest iiln this book, and of course, our thanks to the woiiderful student body for dooperating with us through every phase of the task.l As this book goes to press, we have detected no errors. In the event, however, that errors are discovered we offer our apology to those indivi- duals concerned and ask their indulgence. We have exhausted all means in our power to secure accuracy and correctness. The worries, the mistakes, the last-minute deadlines are at last all over- yet through all this it has been a real thrill to see a glimmer of an idea emerge into being and to watch it develop into the pattern of a yearbook. We leave it now with the happiest of memories. 150 Q lon? .yefef . . PATRUNIZE UUH ADVERTISERS HANCOCK BANK SERVES THE MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST ir GULFPORT PASS CHRISTIAN PHONE 43 PHONE 73 BAY ST.
