WINTER SILENCE Listen — the woods are still And silence silvers every tree; Who can believe the springtime dusk Will hear the thrush ' s melody? Look — no blossom breathes Upon the air of a shy perfume; Who in the gray of twig and limb Can see the fragrant lilac bloom? Yet in the silence The answer to all doubting lies — The robins sing in the orchard trees, The lilacs lift a gay surprise.
