Look — no blossom breathes Upon the air of a shy perfume; Who in the gray of twig and limb Can see the fragrant lilac bloom? Yet in the silence The answer to all doubting lies — The robins sing in the orchard trees, The lilacs lift a gay surprise. Who can answer then That faith in its mysterious ways Shall bring to men sweet peace and song After the winter of these days? Martha Townley. In no other sport do you tind the same thrills, joys, and experiences. When you hoist sails and weigh anchor, you can never positively tell what will happen before you again touch land. There are days when the weather is serene and there is almost no wind; then it is that you may be calmed for hours with nothing to do but watch the sea gulls. But there are other days when the wind whistles strongly through the stays and your boat is likely to heel over so com- pletely that you can see the keel. It is impossible to describe the sensa- tion you get from skippering a boat! Everyone must feel a little different about it. As for myself, I feel a sort of exaltation, and pride that, big and heavy though my craft may be, I can control it with just a movement of my arm. To all who love the wind and water, I recommend sailing as a never-to-be-forgotten experience. PATRICIA LAND MARDI GRAS TOURNAMENT The Mardi Gras tournament was held for the purpose of selecting the King of the Bit and Spur court. All girls in Class A were eligible to compete. Each girl that rode was called a Knight and she chose someone else to be her Lady. To decide who would be King, every girl had to gallop by three posts, each post having a small, red ring on it. All contestants had a long lance which they used to try to get the rings. The one ob- taining the most rings out of two tries, be- came King. The next highest four were given special distinction in their order of winning. The remaining riders were also Knights of the court. All Knights wore two-tone capes of bright and various colors. Each cape had a small, perky hat to match. The Kingship fell to Elsa Jones, who was also King last year. Betty Woolfolk, who was Elsa ' s Lady, became Queen. The program was opened when the ladies of the Court of Atheson were brought in one by one and presented to the King, Inez Hooge. Next all members of the A. A. arrived in various cos- tumes. Then a blare of trum- pets announced the arrival of the Queen of the Court of Atheson, Mary D. Stew- art, who, until this time had been unknown. The new members of the A. A. were then presented to the King and Queen. Following this the vanquished, but noble, Knights of the visiting Bit and Spur Court en- tered. They formed an archway, with their lances, in the center of the auditorium. The honored Knights walked through this and formed two lines beyond. Then the King and Queen of the Bit and Spur Court, walked through the archway and up on to the stage, where they were presented to the King and Queen of the Court of Atheson. The King of Atheson placed a crown on each of their heads and they retired to their own thrones at the other end of the auditorium. After this there was a short program, followed by grand marches from both courts. Then everyone was invited to dance and have a good time. DIANA McNAIR JUNIORS WIN HOCKEY TOURNAMENT Spirit was high for both sides before the game between the High School and Jun- iors began, for this game would determine who would get the goat. Lynn Shapiro, the High School Captain, and Marge Lindsey, the Junior captain, had their teams ready and anxious to start. At the end of the first qua rte r, High School was ahead two points. But determined to win the Tournament, the Juniors fought hard and came out victori- ous with a score of nine to three. A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE The fields once white with wind-tossed snow, Today have another guise. No longer white, no longer clean No longer, still blue skies. Those fields of peace of former days Are now a blood-red hue, And those who reaped the harvest there Have other things to do. Peace on the earth; good will to men, A thing of by-gone days? A Christmas eve without the songs, Or heart-felt words of praise? The hopes, the prayers of those behind Bring others Christmas cheer, And those who lived now live again Free from strife and fear. The merry Yule-tide spirit glows From hearts both young and old. The guns are stilled, no flares burst forth, When the star its tale has told. The Savior ' s birth — a day of Peace, And all is white and still; The angels ' choir now echoes near, Peace on earth; to men — good will. MARGARET SELBY. Y. W. Toline WORKSHOP We remember with com- mingled feelings the Work- shop, the place where work is play acting and play acting is unrelenting, hard work. But there comes the time after the curtain has fallen on the last scene of a smooth per- formance, such as that of Letters to Lucerne, and an en- thusiastic audience has ap- plauded our histrionic art. Then, we are consciously hap- py; the Workshop is suddenly a sort of stars ' dressing room where we remove the grease paint, receive congratulations from our most personal friends, and snap back to normal with refreshment for body and for spirit. STEWART SPEAKERS ' TABLE BANQUET PEANUT WEEK It ' s peanut week, heighho, heighho; So up with the curtain and on with the show! We went to breakfast one morn at day- break, And a peanut was there for each of us to take, Tied around the peanut, with secrecy and care, Was a name of some sweet belle, and this secret we couldn ' t share. After we had seen the name and hidden it in our minds, We knew that the rest of this week we ' d have some gay old times. So, the best thing that we did was find our peanut ' s residence, Then we started making beds, and sending little presents. We ' d sneak down the hall, into the room, Make up her bed, then out with a broom. Everyone wore guilty grins, as if she knew so well, And you would beg on bended knee, please tell me, Who ' s my Shell? So in fun and mystery we went for a week And more amusing jokes and frolic, I shall never hope to seek. [ 140 j CINDERELLA UP TO DATE In a penthouse in the city Far above the noisy strife Lived two fair but fretful maidens Pining out a useless life. From Manana to Morocco — They were rated far and near People murmured (when they entered) They ' re the ' debbies ' of the year. In a backroom of the penthouse Hidden from the public eye Lurked the youngest of the trio — Poor child! She ' d never had a try. While the other two were garbed In the finest of array She had never ever glimpsed Gowns by Molyneaux — hat, Dache. On the fifth day of December In a year we need not name Came a local celebration Which achieved a world-wide fame. For a beauty gueen was chosen To appease the public eye And in all their furs and satins The two ' debs ' sailed forth to try. Cinderella in the back room Sat and wept about her fate — ' Til a signal from the doorbell Roused her to her sorry state. As she opened up the portals A man entered who — with force — Told her, What you need, young lady Is our one ' success school course ' . General time is about six weeks But, I grant you, ' C ' est la war. ' So we ' ll speed up for defense And cram it into minutes four. He whisked out apparatus Lipstick, rouge, mascara, too He arranged a new coiffure Keyed to please the masculine view. A party gown was next — An original of tulle And he sighed, addressing Cindy, You ' re a graduate of the school. Thank you sir, she told him sweetly — Here ' s your check, and you may go — As for me, well, sisters dearest, I ' m going to steal your show. The rest of this is history How she conguered, saw, and came She was crowned the gueen of beauty All the throng acclaimed her name. And she met a visiting fireman Who promptly lost his heart. While her sisters murmured, Wolfess — He was whisp ' ring Need we part? The clock struck twelve unnoticed, For in our modern day Twelve o ' clock is — only twelve — n Cinderella ' s here to stay. The oddest moron is the one who married sixteen times. Four richer, four poorer, four better, four worse. Ruth: Is there anything I can do for you? Martha Martin: I wanted to see Mr. Cooke. He routed me home in a freight train. • Miss Beachler: Can you tell me what a Spanish negative is? Did you ever hear about the little moron who cut a hole in the carpet to see the floor show? Then there was the one who sat up all night, studying for the blood test he was to have. Dad (to his worried little boy just before Christmas): What is troubling you, Son? Little Boy: I suppose it has all been taken care of, but I ' d like to be sure. Did they issue Santa Claus a C book? [ 142] RAT-WEEK It is rat-week in old Gulf Park Each lower classman pledges. The girls are dressed in funny clothes Their replies have no edges. Some propose to Captain de Jaive, Others to Dr Cox. They must address their masters as Miss, Or have starch in their locks. They also perform in the dining room, And get their master ' s mail. The rats must mind their masters ' word, And obey without fail. Serenades are heard each morning, In the dim early light. And queer parades around the fountain, Are seen from morn ' til night. All the dirty clothes are washed, The beds are made up too. And if the work is not done weli, The rats must polish shoes. Rat-week has finally come and gone, And peace again reigns. The ex-pledges are friends of all, Forgotten are rat-week pains. ELEANOR THOMAS. VACATION We ' re off! we shouted as we boarded the train, And completely gone is all the strain, Of the past two weeks when we ' ve worked so hard, At packing and sending each graduation card, And the goodbyes are said to those so dear, Whom we hope to see the following year. Gone are the days we hurried to practice, And listening to talks brought on by the Axis, Gone, too, are the week-ends at Huckleberry Hill And the classes that were meant to develop our skill. All of this is completely o ' er, As I have stated times before, But the memory will linger long, Like the refrain of a well-loved song. FRANCES WICKUFFE. [ 143] MAGNOLIA BLOSSOMS In joyous May time when the earth has wakened, Life springs gladly everywhere; When heavy fragrance of magnolia blossoms, And the lilting bird songs fill the air; We reaffirm our loyalty to Gulf Park, In whose happiness we share, And we implore High God that all her future service wrought Be radiant as our Senior torchlight flare; We know that lacking vision people perish, Worthy aim forgot, they fail; And offices of beauty, strength, and valor, Are not cherished full without avail; We know the course of runners must be forward, Light be passed if truth prevail; And we, united, pass our emblematic taper, bright, To all in Gulf Park guesting for the grail. May memories of this our Alma Mater, Of this golden trysting hour, Inspire and sweeten every day of living As a glorious magnolia flower. May every hope and dream and aspiration, Given to us as our dower, Illuminate each heart and mind and guide us bravely on Until we move with wisdom and with power. WILLIETTA EVANS.
