Lookie-l..ookie! barked Sarah Gillespie at the Sigma Psi Circus. Thus started the activities of the sorority for the year '38 and '39. What fun! What reality! It was like stepping right into the main tent for the big performance. To the right and to the left were the oddities of the side show. You could almost hear the roar of the lions, which roar turned out to be just the plaintive cry of the wild woman of Sigma Psi-Mary Virginia de Yampert. And the fat lady! You would have sworn never to touch a piece of cake or candy again. The Heavy Hettie was none other than Marjorie Crowe. There was fortune teller Dot Hollman, wrecked Jeanne Martin, I-Iulu Lou as portrayed by Selma Sayeg, half man-half woman Jane Rice, petrified Rebecca Duke, and the eighth dwarf! Confetti curled around necks and wiggled into eyes and ears. Betsy Weymouth handed out hamburgers. There were popcorn and pink lemonade. Yes-you could even smell the sawdust at the Sigma Psi Circus! Then came hell week. The name implies as much. Rats las the pledges were calledj cowered in the halls and stuck to the rooms in fear of their masters. Beds were made! Rooms were cleaned! Books were carried! And all at the expense of the pledges. There were some of the strangest costumes donned by the pledges. You could almost see their shiny faces in the dark, for no lipstick or rouge was granted these pitifully clad pledges. But it was fun! Everyone had the time of her life. Teachers and all. eThen came the release for the pledges in formal initiation. You got a lump in your throat when you took the oath and looked around at the sisters of Sigma Psi. Then there was the tri-sorority banquet given at the Edgewater Gulf Hotel on February 4, 1939, and you had your share of food and fun. Then later in the spring came an all-day picnic at Ship Island. You had a grand day, bathing in the surf and eating fried chicken and ice cream cones. The sunburned noses gave evidence of the trip for the rest of the week. PAT PIPKIN. Chaplain 1 ibn:-:Nl 'Gulf pg' GZZGHQZAG With siren screaming and a voice warning, 1-Iurrylv groups of rushees dashed into Le Cafe de Bonnes Aimes falias the HY Hutl on October 17, 1938, where they received the hearty welcome and excellent entertainment of the Delta Alpha members. This little cafe was a place of refuge from a scheduled air raid on the city, Here gracious Delta Alphas served delicious food and entertained with song and dance so that the refugees might forget their cares. Presently it was announced that all danger had passed and that the streets were safe, so guests re- luctantly took leave, with a feeling of warmth for Delta Alpha hospitality. Rush party, however, proved only the beginning of a week of superiority for old members. Obedient rats served their masters in any way asked, doing everything from scrubbing the fish pond with toothbrushes to serenading the Coxes. But their misery ended with the Kangaroo Court on Saturday and the impressive, formal initiation on the next evening. On February 4, 1939, Delta Alpha members joined hands with Sigma Psi and Delta Chi members to enjoy a successful banquet at the Edgewater Gulf Hotel. Plenty of good food, music, a cordial welcome, and excellent entertainment marked this banquet as a highspot of the Delta Alpha calendar year. Outstanding in itself, also, was the lovely dance on March 18 at which time every Delta Alpha really had the time of her lifef' Delta Alpha Sigma's great success in 1938-39 can be attributed to excellent cooperation among the members, capable officers, headed by President Betty Fer- gusong and the keen interest of our sponsor, Miss Ann Maddox. MS wen JZZGAJS' On October 22, 1938, the Y-Hut suddenly changed into a typical dude ranch house, with a horse at the door, saddles on the porch, and even red-checked table- cloths in the mess hall. All this was to welcome the prospective members of Delta Chi and to acquaint them with the old members. At the door the guests were warmly greeted and presented with ten-gallon hats. They were entertained by horse racing, dancing, singing, and a stirring melodrama, while hot dogs and coffee were served in true dude ranch style. The following Friday, bids for membership were distributed. Sunday night the new members were formally pledged and presented with the rainbow colors in the form of three pieces of ribbon. Immediately following this impressive cere- mony, the new members received instructions for Hell Week, one of the most memorable of the year. Each rat came running at the sound of her master's voice and did just as she was told to do. Strange were the costumes on the G. P. C. campus that week! The rats', even said Madame, I am a donkeyli' in their sleep! At the end of Hell Week came the formal initiation, and the rats,' became regular members of Delta Chi. Just before Christmas vacation Delta Chi aided in the sale of Christmas seals, and every girl contributed her part. The annual Tri-Sorority dinner dance was held on February 4 at the Edgewater Gulf Hotel. There was a toast to the new girls by each of the three sorority pres- idents and a response by three new members. Following was a toast to all the girls by the three sponsors. During the evening various other forms of entertain- ment were presented by the different groups. The Delta Chi dance on March 11 marked the last prominent activity of the school year. This has been one of the most pleasant and successful years in the history of Delta Chi. The members sincerely hope that next year will be fully as enjoyable. LAURA JEAN MARKHAM. With Q'Rosie,' and Bell,', Gypsy and Copper, we gallop through wooded paths and along sandy beaches. Early breakfast rides and cool moonlight rides afford us fun and gaiety. Nor are our endeavors kept strictly to ourselves. At the Spring Horse Show we do such competi- tive tricks as trotting along with eggs and balancing glasses of water. Finally comes the Gymkhana, where skill in riding and jumping is displayed. For the Mardi Gras ball each knight clad in bright costume rides for his fair lady's hand in hopes that he might be King of the Riding Corps. That we can swing it in more than one way is certainly apparent if an out- sider gazes at the Great Southern Golf Course on one of the afternoons of the week-end. We practice first on our small range here on the campus under the able in- struction of Mr. Art Saun- ders, and he prophesies that we all soon will he profes- sionals. Our archery range on the front campus attracts the passers-by, and we usually have an au- dience each day. JL Maw VVith great jubilance and ceremony the Krewe of Atheson of Gulf Park College hailed the open- ing of the annual ball on February 17th. King jean Hinshaw, President of the Athletic Associa- tion, and Queen Betty Andres reigned supreme in the fairy court of Titania and Oberon. The queen, attractive in her gown of white broeaded talleta with gleaming silver train, was chosen by a vote of the Association, and her identity was concealed until the night of the ball. VVe got up at hve and were met by members from town, who carried us about ten miles on the other side of Biloxi to our horses. VVe then rode about a mile back into the country to the casting ground. VVe got there just as the hunt started and were off with hne fettle. The lrunt lasted about four hou1's, and by that time everyone was worn out, but still enthusiastic. Alice Johnston was pre- sented with a brush, a high honor. Charlotte Sheffer received a somewhat different souvenir. All the girls returned to G. P. C. happy after such an enjoyable day. Jane, the perfect peanut, keeps secret the fact that she has ,to change her sheets, and is on a diet, but she is inspired by Sally's good intentions. So she slips down to Ann's room with a few Babe Ruth's and Filibusters. She opens the door, and bumps smack into Ann. Does she blush and stammer? No! She whispers, My peanut nearly caught me, so I had to rush in here to hide. Ann, of course, wants to know who the peanut isg so Jane mumbles a word sounding like jousox Zaczachawachach, and ending with a sneeze. VVhen Ann asks again, in a still lower voice Jane breathes her reply. Ann says, Why, oh, yes, I know that girl, and secretly thinks how embarrassing it must be to have such a low voice. Ann has a swell plan, she rushes into her peanut's room, presents her with an apple and announces, I'm your shell. The girl thinks it's a big joke, laughs muchg and her biggest surprise comes when she finds out later that Ann is really her shelI.
