S. Sigma Psi sailed from the Gulf Park Harbor, carrying on her maiden voyage all new comers to the school. Bad weather could not dampen the spirits of the passengers and merry crew, and talent gathered from foreign countries, as well as celebrities from our own, royally entertained the guests. Captain Beth McIntosh falias president of the Sigma Psi Iota Sorority, was master of ceremonies, and, as the evening went on, she discovered in the midst of the crowd Ay tank ay go home Garbo and glamorous Carole Lombard. Closer inspection might have revealed these personages to be Mary Martha Kahler and Nan Bond. As the program began Captain Mclntosh announced Princess Ah Li whom she had found in Hawaii. She delighted the onlookers with her beautiful interpretation of the famous hula hulav dance. The princess was none other than Ruby Graham who has spent several years of her life in the Hawaiian Islands. Mary Washburn, although a new student, graciously consented to sing for the assembled company and gave a blues version of If You Ever Should Leave. A comedy tumbling group consisting of Frances Woodruff, Betty Andres, Shirley Van Dolah, and Betty Ruth Friend sent peals of laugh- ter through the rafters with their antics and comments. The last number of the program was Lovin', by Mary Washburn and Shirley Van Dolah, White-coated stewardesses refreshed the passengers with cokes and doughnuts, and a small nautical favor was given to each guest. Hell Week followed with the pledges or 'iratsn serving their masters in various ways, from making their beds to singing the laundry list in the dining room. The weird costumes worn by the rats heightened the spirit of fun and comedy that prevailed throughout the week which ended with formal initiation. JANE FRENCH E701 DELTA CHI SIGMA BETTY CONWELL . Before leaving, it was necessary to find new members for the crew. Docking October 16 at the popular base known as the Y-Hut, the ship was decorated as a regular Captain Henry Show Boat, and guests readily captured that prevailing seagoin' spirit. Typical of the setting of its docking place, pecan mammies and pralines were given as favors, and pork and beans in bun parties were served. A large group eager to become full-fledged members of this wandering ship were pledged in by Captain Conwell, Sunday, October 24. Everything was now in readiness for the long and peaceful journey. But is it going to be so peaceful? new members asked, when a week followed of meekly obey- ing their rat-masters' slightest whim. The final test came Sunday, Novem- ber 7, when the new members were tried in a Kangaroo Court. All success- fully passed and became a real part of the crew at a formal and solemn initia- tion the same evening. The S. S. Delta Chi was sailing peacefully one sunny morning when word came by wireless that two other ships, the S. S. Delta Alpha and the S. S. Sigma Psi were near. They had planned to meet at the Edgewater Gulf Hotel for an evening of gaiety if the Delta Chi was not too far off shore. The ships were but a short distance out, and the crews relinquished their sea-going togs to enjoy a banquet and an evening of dancing. It was with regret that the Delta Chi crew left their friends and the Edgewater Hotel again to head for the open sea. Returning home after several weeks of sailing, the ship docked at that favorite port, Gulf Park. On March 12, the crew celebrated their retum with a party given in the Gulf Park auditorium. The journey of the Delta Chi crew has come to an end. Members extend the sincere hope that next year's crew may find their course to be as pleasant and enjoyable as the one they followed this year. When the door of the Y-Hut was first opened for those to attend the rush party of these vivacious Delta Alphas, the success of the year's activities was insured, for the scene that met each uncertain eye was breath-taking and un- believable. The theme of the party was taken from Treasure Island, and each phase ofthe colorful tale was carried out to perfection. Hanging Spanish moss, bright pirate costumes, loot in gold treasure chests, slcull and crossbones-all were cleverly worked into the mysterious pattern of the pirates' den, where a Gulfport orchestra offered its music for dancing. An entertaining floor show was presented by the old members. However, the party was but the beginning of many good times. The newly-elected pledges, or rats, were now the center of attraction, as they humbly obeyed the commands of their rat-masters. Days of informal and formal initiations finally over, the rats could throw off their lowly mien and become full-fledged members in their own right. A lovely and unforgettable occasion was the formal inter-sorority banquet held at the Edgewater Gulf Hotel on January 8. Here the Delta Alphas joined the members of the other sororities for a delightful dinner. After welcoming the new members, all turned to dancing in the ball room. It was a gay evening from start to finishg and everyone joined wholeheartedly in the dancing of the Big Apple, as well as in the taking of photographs, which soon became an entertainment in itself. Much of the success of the activities of Delta Alphas during the past year is due to the interest of its president, Genie Goff, and to the other officers who have cooperated with her in every way. It is impossible to think of the sorority without its sponsors, Miss Cecil Ramsay and Miss Ann Maddox, whose help throughout che year has been appreciated by the members. RIDING We like to ride at Gulf Park! We really have fun on our breakfast and supper rides. Our two biggest events are the Gymkhana and the Spring Horse Show. Ar Gymkhana we do everything from hunting potatoes to seeing who can make her horse walk the slowest. In the Horse Show, which is taken very seriously by all, we try to show our best riding and jumping form. This year for the first time we had an interclass horse show, in which the winning class was awarded His Majesty, the Goat. The Juniors won, but Senior Frances Woodruff proved to be the best single rider. 'Wil SAILINC-3 AND SURF-BOARDING Cut number of landlubbers decreases more and more each year as the number of girls interested in sailing increases. We have fun at the Gulfport Yacht Club rac- ing in the Fish Class Sloops in addition to enjoying our sailing lessons and races in front of the school in our own cat boats. We lilce our surf-boarding, also, and those who have passed the required swimming test have done a lot of it this year. af, ,I W -: , AM fl' , 4 M fifkn' '4 ,. if lm' i v 15751. -: ,I '4egggPj,wU'N,f f I , I 1 ' A . The girls have much fun in the afternoon swims in the Gulf with surfboarding in- cluded, as well as during the instruction hours in the pool. In the Interclass Swimming meet, the high school emphat- ically showed which class had the best swimmers and divers, for they carried His Majesty away with great pride and glee. TENNIS, GOLF ARCHERY Golf, as a result of the enthusiasm of Miss Pilcher, has risen many notches in popularity this year. Mondays spent at the Great South- ern Golf Links are enjoyed by members of the Golf Club. An- other addition in our golfing is the new Golf Pro, Mr. Saunders, who gives the girls instruction daily on the back campus. But tennis and archery by no means take a back seat for golf. Each week-end, as well as in the afternoons during the week, the tennis courts are filled. In the interclass tournament, the high school conquered. The Archery stu- dents are quite expert in their sport. J 5'll'lsl 3 N :Qui 'F' . -af ji 33' L, , r . , N- 1' iw ' Bvio F5 it 4- Wim. .. .,, gs,-., 1.3 v' s w2Q'. L ' '4:.:wq WDM 'N sb '. It would he harcl to say which is the most popular of these sports, but at least it is a well-known fact that all three create heated compe- tition. In the hockey tour- nament which was played before Christmas, the high school came out victorioua with scores 4-2 in the High School-Senior game. and 3-1 in the Senior-Junior game. ARDI GRAS BAL The Krewe of Atheson of Gulf Park College held its an- nual ball, with Betty Conwell and Lucy Daily reigning as queen and king of the Court of Arthur. The queen was chosen by the members of the Athletic Association who composed the krewe, and the king is president of that group. The queen was not revealed until her procession, nor were the dukes and the ladies of her court. The attend- ants to the king and queen were Martha Broeder, Genie Goff, Beth McIntosh, Frances Wood- ruff, Caroline Atkins, Margaret Emrich, Vera Hooge, and Alice Louise Palmer. e The royal regalia of the rulers was of silver and green, while the attendants wore costumes of gold and orange, the ladies, mantles to show their rank. The trains were of royal purple with silver design. To the Court of Arthur came the Knight of Array, Beth Campbell, and her lady, Virginia Whitcomb. The king of the ball crowned the Knight of Array and Lady Virginia as king and queen of the Court of the Red Cross Knight. By virtue of skilled horsemanship and valor on the field of battle, King Beth had overcome all contestants in the afternoon fray of tilting at the rings, and was crowned king. Attendants of the king and queen were Knights Eva Blake, Don I-Iutto, Betty Scott, and Virginia Sims, and their ladies Ruby Crain, Rosemary Fair, Sel- ma Sayeg, and Zenobia Pratt. ES' 'sl.1.... pg .- I Rus-at FMR- R . peanuts which' have a small belt of paper around their middles. This paper contains one name-the peanut- to-be. Each girl draws a peanut and then becomes the shell for the girl whose name she gets. The duties of the shell consist of doing nice, con- siderate things for her peanut, such as making beds, purchasing gobs of calories in pretty paper wrappers, and taxing her ingenuity for quaint ways of present- ing these services. This, of course, involves mental, physical, and financial effort. One can't be a satis- factory shell unless one possesses at least two of these latter qualities. Undoubtedly, experience is the best teacher. Experience, being interpreted, means the shell's ability to sneak into a crowded room and plant the gift substantially upon a desk or dresser, One should have rubber gloves for this act. fThe peanut may be majoring in criminologyxl The peanut receives these bountiful gifts with abs and ohs and makes a point of staying out of her room most of the week so that her shell won't be hampered by her proximity. The girl who has spent at least four years here will openly go for a long walk or spend the afternoon in sport. The newcomer will invariably write letters or pore over books in her room, while her shell hovers aimlessly around in the hall, seeking a go--between. Then, perhaps, the go- between will prove to be the peanut's best friend and the school's best information bureau, and the over- cautious movements will disclose the shell's adroitness. The peanut may likewise proht from experience. It is always beneficial for her to sit on her only pair of glasses Qbeing sure to crush them thoroughlyl. This will prevent sharp-sightedness and detection. Or, per- haps, she might play possum and manage suddenly to drop her eyelids in order to adopt the sweet serenity of a sleeping beauty. A certain mysterious mood shrouds the college dur- ing Peanut VVeek. Questions like VVho can my shell be? VVhat can I give my peanut? or Qfrom the more mercenaryj I wonder if I'll get something to- day? prevail. An answer to this would be lots of patience mixed thoroughly with a large dose of good spirits and a not-too-hopeful outlook. One should not expect too much, for all can't be successful. One should only hope that she will not be one of the un- fortunates who never will know the identity of her shell. ,At the end of the week, if a peanut is not claimed by her slrell, she must forever remain a vic- tim of that power, mystery. It's the not-knowing that hurts, and not the fact that she nonchalantly ate away her shell's allowance. To those peanuts who are claimed, a joy and new friendship will arise, if not a new friendship, per- haps a closer one. The shell has begun to spin her web of amiability around her peanut, and at the end of the school year the design and hold will be com- pleted. Maxine Whiteside: What is water? Rebecca Duke: Something that turns black when I put my hands into it. Miss Manning: Lay your papers on the desk as you 'pass' out. Miss Fulson: When you face the north you have on your right hand the great continent of Asia: what have you on your left hand ? La Dean tgazing at her left handjt A wart, but I can't help it. Mercer: Why do all the boys smile at me? Whitcomb: Maybe they're just too polite to laugh out loud. l146fl Captain de Jaive: Wh'at's good for my wife's fallen arches Doctor: Rubber heels ?', Captain de Jaive: Rub them with what? pil H Marion French: f'Frances is in bed with her stomach. She's been there two weeks. Dorothy Whetston: Well, that's too bad, but it's better for her to be in bed with her stomach' than without it. V Sara Bodclie: I'll bet you've never seen the Catskill Mountainsf' VVinnie VVhitehead: No, but I've seen cats kill rats. Love isn't stone blind when the stone is a dia- mond. Miss Northrop: Describe a niche in a modern Church? Mary Love: It's the same as an itch anywhere else, only you have to be more careful how you scratch it. Mrs. Yates gave this as a syllogism- Marriage is an institution. Marriage is love. Love is blind. Therefore marriage is an institution for the blind. Anita: Mary Paul fainted the other day. Dottie: Was she very sick ? Anita: No, we thought she was going to kick the bucket, but she only turned a little pale. Ruby Graham frunning into a hardware storej: Give me a nickel rat trap. Quick! I've got to catch a bus. Florrie, looking up from her chemistry book: Did you ever take chloroform, Duflie? Duffy: No, who teaches it? A freshman is as impossible to disguise as a Ford. wus mm un W ktn E hurl: fgw, AQAH W GUM 7: Q5 EW 4 SHE?
