A popular night club was the setting, and the master of ceremonies presided over a brilliant floor show. The whole point of the party was to find talent among the many students at Gulf Park-and plenty was found. A second Ina Ray Hutton, a close rival of Eleanor Powell, two wandering cowboys, and a hill-billy singer took part in the floor show. The participants tied for the award, which was a weekis engagement at the popular rendezvous, Little lVlan's 5 and prizes in the form of suckers were presented to none but the deserving listeners. On Sunday night, November 1, pledging was held in the Delta Alpha sun parlor and hell week followed with black cotton- stockinged uratsi' humbly obeying their rat mastersv at their slightest command. Finally, the most important event, the formal initiation, took place Sunday evening, November 8. Ar 5:30, January 23, the members of the Delta Alpha sorority left Gulf Park for their dinner dance at the Edgewater Gulf Hotel. The Gulfport High School orchestra played during the evening for the dancing and singing. But, as all things end, this party ended, too, and the girls rode home with a full moon sailing over the gulf. The Delta Alphas and their dates enjoyed doing a little truck- ing at the Josephine College Dance in the college auditorium Sat- urday, March 13, and fun was had by all. Another happy year draws to a close, but we sincerely hope that our paths will cross many times in years to come. LUCY DAILY, 38. I-Iandbills an- nouncing a circus were circulated. The Y hut was trans- formed to a sawdust ring, with ringmaster, side-shows, hot- dogs, and peanuts. Everyone went away with balloons, prizes, and the words of a fortune teller that there would be a dark man in your life. Then the traditional Hell Week', followed, with roosters crowing in the court before breakfast, obedient rats on ridic- ulous missions, and freaks of nature in black stockings, pigtails, and foolish hats. By the end of that week, the pledges were eagerly ready for solemn initiation. In January the old members gave a dinner party welcoming the new members at the Edgewater Gulf Hotel. And as a fitting climax to this year, the new members gave an April dance in honor of the old members. DOROTHY SMITH. mi 'Sr' ? The race was set for one o'clock. The people gathered there To hear the booming of the gun VVhich started off the pair. The day was hot, the hare was tired, The turtle felt real cool, The rabbit had too much to sip, And made himself a fool. The rabbit bragged, the race drew nigh, It started with a bang. The turtle plodded on his way, The rabbit hopped and sang. He laughed and skipped 0'er half the way, And sleepy he did get. I'll just sit down and take a nap, He'll never catch me yet. So Mr. Rabbit took a snooze, And Oscar tried to run. He'd giv'n the rabbit sleeping dope Before the race had begun. If he will only sleep a while, I'm sure I can catch up. He can't be much ahead of me, With all that he did sup! He hurried faster than the wind, And past him he did creep. Sho, 'nuff, beneath the shady trees His friend was fast asleep. Three hours passed, the hare awoke And then started to run. He heard the cries, Here comes Oscar. He knew the turtle had won. The turtle usually is slow, But in this case was fast. He thought the race just one huge joke, Because the hare was last. -ANN KIENZLE. Qulf Coast Legend 'Neath the hazy sun of Autumn, When red the oak leaves wave, 'Neath the boughs of Indian Summer, Walked a strong young brave. His hair was black as raven feathers, His body bronze and strong. And his heart was bold within him As he slowly walked along. Behind he dragged a mighty stag, VVith antlers long and great, Behind he dragged a mighty stag, To help him win a mate. To a wigwam by the waters This brave slow made his way, And at the feet of an old chieftain He bent and laid his prey. Oh, chief of warriors, mighty hunter, Accept this kill in peace. For I come to ask for your good will To let our warfare cease. I also love your daughter fair, To her I'd wedded be. But the enemy chief drew up in scorn And pointed to a tree. Not until this oak shall have VVithin its trunk a ring Should I permit my only child To wed you, lowly thing. And then the brave hung low his head And quietly slipped away. Grief was deep within his heart, His hope lied with the day. But with the night a mighty storm Came, terrible to see. The thunder roared, the lightning flashed And struck that old oak tree. And when the sun came blazing up The Indians gazed with awe, For in the trunk was a large ring, And when the young brave saw, His heart once more beat glad and guy: He went to claim his bride, The two went forth to his own land, Happily, side by side. -BETTE FAE KEARNS. M ia -- , fi M' 60 r W PEANUT WEEK Mystery always intrigues me. A weird shriek in the night sends my imagination soaring. Gory tales of mur- der and crime send chills rippling up and down my spinal column. This, however, is not that type of thing, but the element of mystery is present. At Gulf Park we have a week devoted to charity. That is, Ilot to the poverty-stricken souls who lack the necessities of life, but to each other twho also lack some-thingl. At the beginning of the week we are given a peanut -a real peanut-and around this delicacy there is a piece of paper with a name on it. The claimer of that name is called a peanut. The possessor of the nut with the name on it is the shell of the one to whom the name belongs. Now we come to the mysterious part of the thing. The nut does not know who her shell is, and the object of the whole thing is to bring her gifts of great variety and number without letting her discover the shell's identity. My shell was clever, but so was I. As I've previously stated, mystery is the thing. I love it. My shell was a most devoted one. She seldom neglected me, but she was not aggressive. She was careful. The first clue that I discovered was that another girl received her gifts in the same kind of container that I did. Fron this I derived that she must have a roommate. CThat eliminated one person in the whole school. She had no roommatej The next day nothing further developed. I even hid in the closet for a while, but with unproductive results. I suddenly remembered a poem-tthat happens often. but it isn't seriousl-a proverbial poem that my mother taught me. It was this: All things come to him who waits, But there's a rule that's slicker. The man who goes for what he wants That contains some advice and I decided to follow it. I got up the following day bright and early, and around eleven o'clock went snooping. I sneaked in and out of rooms for an hour. I received very peculiar receptions in different places, which fact led me to believe that the occupants wished that I yi ere elsewhere. These nasty people I also eliminated from my list of suspects. That narrowed it down to about ten girls. Of course, at this point the chase became exciting. I believe that I neg- lected to mention that this doesn't go on forever, like jack Benny's attempts to play Love in Bloom. The time is limited to a week. By this time three days had dragged by. My gifts were lovely, and I was tempted to leave well enough alone. I rested for two days, and again that detecting urge descended upon me. I started questioning people, but they were so very, even rudely, uncommunicative that I became depressed, but where there's a will there's a way, and so I continued my search. It would take volumes to mention every little device and means I usedg so we'll skip over two days. They were merely a waste of energy, my time and other people's tirr 2. I won't make the same mistakes again, I assure you. Time was short, only one more day was left. I was frantic! QI like that word, it's so expressive, but I was really just fire'd.D I even started reading detective magazines in the hope that maybe. someone else had thought of something I hadn't. The following day I woke up and on my dresser was the container that my shell always used. In it was a note. Something dehnite at last! I searched for my glasses, put them on, and then took them off because they hurt my eyes. fI'll have to start wearing them regularlyj Then I read the note. It was brief and straight to the point. She signed it Your Shell, and disclosed her identity. Then it dawned on me. Had I used just a wee bit of ingenuity, I might have traced her hand- VVill et it all the t uickerl' Writing 011 Pff?Vi0UU HOTCS- -Berry FRIEND. g l .U'h. l . I NN ' ' ., I -f . K S . Who's got a cigarette? fcoming closer to Friendship Oak, which is incidentally the rendezvous of all the smokersl. Oh, no, Corinne, I couldn't think of taking your last. Well, if you insist-you know, I have a whole pack upstairs, but I'm just too lazy to go get them. I,ll pay you back tomorrow. Now, who's got a light? Ah, thanks a lot. Oh, hello, Brooks, you're just the one I want to see. Have you read QThe Rape of the Lock' yet? Do you know, I sat up rill almost midnight trying to get some sense out of that thing-I just know she'll call on me today, too, 'cause she forgot to yesterday. Oh, I,m so worried! Will I give youa light? All right, Miller, but don't bend it in half like you always do. Hey, Daily, how many demerits did you get for disturbing the peace last night after light bell? Who caught you?,' Hi, Montgomery, did you ever get your sonnet written? Uh, huh, I told you so. One never thinks one will live through the poetry stage, but one always does.
