FINGIII MAIDEN VCDYAGE By KATHLEEN NORRIS I5 ,h.--I S- fx-,.,x-f-f- 'ca-'TLV SENIQIQ l-IISTQRV here are many messages that Gulf Park seniors would like to leave to the school and to their sponsor, Miss Willietta Evans. We have been guided wisely-forever may we remember the beauty we have been taught and have experienced. Banquets, teas, dances given in honor of us have made us realize how much in esteem our presi- dent and dean have held us. Sing Song, play day, and other competi- tive sports have brought us in contact with the lower classmen whom we are sad to leave. Not long ago, the tryst with our torchbearers was made with the realization that we were giving ourselves just as high a standard to match as they have. Then, too, baccalaureate has left us anything but cold in consideration of problems concerning our sacred future-because we do hold it sacred-, Alma Mater. You have shown us many paths-especially those highest ones on which we have sworn to live. And, now, dear Gulf Park by the sea, on this graduation night of solemnity, when we receive our diplomas, the realization of one dream and hope has become an actuality. May the beauty and exquisiteness of your Southern evening ever pierce our memories so that our lives may be as great and as shining as those bright stars above us. DOROTHY GARIBALDI. Page 49 JUNIGR HISTCJRY ur faces beam with smiles as we look back on this year at Gulf Park. Memories of all kinds flash before our eyes as we re- view the events of the year. The frequent battles in athletics over His Majesty, the Goat, the pep and enthusiasm of Sing Song, the dignity of the Junior Tea, the gaiety of the Junior Prom and the solemnity of the torchbearers service are all part of this big pan- orama. Cur junior classmates have won honors as the Most Orig- inal, the Most Intellectual, the Most Attractive and the Most Pop- ular. But more important than all these events are the friendships we have made during the year, our acquaintances now reach to all parts of the country. It was during those long practices at Sing Song that we really began to know each other, now, at the close of the year, we feel like one big family. We, the Juniors, now stand under the spreading branches of Friendship Oak which the Seniors have granted to us. It is ours to pass onward to the Junior Class of next year with all the ideals and standards we have received. With a sad heart we think of the Seniors, our closest rivals and friends, leaving in search of new experiences and greater adventure. With a high heart we think of the coming year which will be ours to at- tain even greater heights at Gulf Park By-the-Sea. MARY ELLEN DEMOTTE. We were not often in first place when the results of activities were announced, but we were always in the running, and each one of us came through with her chin up, and plenty of that sophomore spirit imbedded in her. One of the lirst events in the school year was the swimming and diving meet at which we made a grand showing, coming on only a few points behind the win- ner. We early realized that our class could boast of some of the best athletes in school and that we could give the larger classes plenty of competition. Almost before we knew it, Sing Song was upon us, and the amount of work we all did in a little over one short week was surprising. Cur stunt, The Search for Happinessf, showed the world's leaders-a dignified President Roosevelt, an enthusiastic President Lebrun, a decisive Premier Mussolini, a jolly Prince of Wales, and a handsome Herr Hitler-unsuccessful in their search for true happi- ness, and stopped by a train wreck in Longbeach of all placesf, Greeted by an effervescent Dr. Cox and an ever business-like Mr. Cooke, they were taken to Gulf Park and there they found what they had so long pursued, genuine happiness. All this time we also had been playing hockey at which we made a good show- ing. Later, after a brief interlude for vacation, came the basketball season, and we had a team that made quite an impression. We displayed more energy than skill, perhaps, but after all, there was the Goat to strive for. Our mid-winter dance was voted another success. The auditorium was be- decked in balloons, large and small, of all colorsg and vines and branches trailed around the windows and in and out the little white fence and archway with which the orchestra was encircled. The lights were soft, the music sweet, and the couples glided rythmically to and fro with only the occasional pop of an ill-fated balloon to break the spell. The spring dance was judged an equal success, and we felt very proud. Our chapel program in February added another laurel to our crown. The last days were crowded with rehearsals with study barely fitted in between. Ar last came that final day, graduation, a scene that will linger in our hearts. When it was all over, we seemed to repeat to ourselves the last words of our Sing Song Alma Mater: Gm loyalty we pledge forever Gulf Park By-H76-S6d.,, ROBERTA BECKLER. Just to get a vague idea of how indispensable we have been, imagine the Sophomores without us to look down upon! At Sing Song, that annually recurring, nerve-wrecking night in the fall when everyone looks green-eyed at every other one, we gave our conception of Gulf Park on its annual ucruisen to the moon a hundred years from now. We ourselves were airplanes, and we showed the judges what skillful navigators we are by serenely cruising past all storm clouds and north winds until at last we reached the end of the rainbow and found the man in the moonn to be a delightful host. In February we gave a dance which came to be known as the Freshman Frolic. The auditorium looked every inch the valentine background with hundreds of big, little, and middle-sized hearts strung about. Under firm orders that all hearts should remain intact, the party progressed gaily. We comprise half the high school and throughout the year have struggled with our older sisters, the Sophomores, in such deadly com- bats as hockey, basketball, and baseball tournaments. In spite of our youth, we have oflered keen competition and can not help feeling just a little bit proud of our scores. Now, at the end of the year, we are glad to believe that our Fresh- man existence has been a full and happy one. PEGGY HYATT Pqbo Julfwrmyg www 'bf N3 ffm ml F' if J QQ E9 x.,0 kf KA! Much bustling and settling of both old and new passengers, then the rush begins! We old members, regaining our sea legs quickly, are able to pick up our acquired responsibilities, and plan to rush the others. Plans are made for an Arty party. Each person is given a list with such things as Answer to a lVIaiden,s Prayerf, and uljaded Summer Love, and with many puzzling looks is on her way. Twenty minutes pass, and then all return with their answers. Such a variety! Punch and cakes are served, and the evening ends with a we,re acquainted feeling for everyone. Sunday evening, we again meet for a lovely buffet supper at the Gray Castle. The tables are beautifully arranged, and unusual entertainment is given by a colored choir. Several interesting speeches telling about the charms of the South are given. Cur supreme moment! Pledge week, now to make the new girls wear stockings on their heads, mismated shoes, and listen to the whispers of What weird creaturesf, as they prance to classes. Old girls smile with the satisfied feeling of beds made, and errands run. Last but most important of all-solemn initiation. All pledging and hazing ended, old and new girls share all responsibilities together. After a cruise of twenty days to the various homes of our passengers, we return to be pleasantly surprised by a dinner and theatre party given by the new girls in honor of the old members. It is a night of high merriment and great glee, with lovely favors given to old members. Plans are in store for a chapel program on February thirteenth, and a dance in March. The end of our stay-the Hnal banquet is a sad, but pleasant occasion as the old officers bid farewell, and the new ofiicers assume the responsibil- ities and happiness of the Sigma Psi Sorority. Cur ship vanishes while blissful memories of friendship and happy times ring in the heart of each girl. DOROTHY MEEK. Gulf Park May, 1935. Pg70 .' ,'- t . 4, VOR M IQ! .LSL ' 1. The rush parties were lovely, as always, but as this year I am an old girl, I must have a little modesty, and not say anything further about them. I-Iowever, I must say that everyone enjoyed them, and as is evident from our new members, they were ex- tremely successful. The return party, given by the new girls, was held at the Edgewater, and as, at the same time, the Standard Gil execu- tives were having an annual meeting, the evening was made even more enjoyable, for we were permitted to dance with them. They were most charming, and two or three nights later invited the sorority back to a dinner and dance, music furnished by none other than Guy Lombardo. So, Mrs. Rowan, always remember, dance with an executive, and you shall be rewarded. By the way, I overheard our president make a remark about Victor Lombardo trying to flirt with her. I just want to say she is quite wrong, as I was sitting at the same table and he was not flirting with her. The past two years in Gulf Park have been wonderful, and I am looking forward to my third with even more interest and pleasure. The Delta Chi Sigma sorority with its lovely girls and splendid congeniality has played a very large part in making it so. Sincerely yours, SAMMIE jo I-IAYS. We felt a little bewil- dered and missed our seniors of last year, but soon becoming ac- customed to the new orders, we plunged into rushing and found it more exciting than being a rushee. Delta Alpha entertained first at Cabin in the Pines, where Japanese lanterns twinkled and punch flowed freely. New girls arrived in a never ending stream, and by ten o'clock we were feeling a little limp and wilted, but enthusiastic over the potential sorority sisters we had met. The next party was given at the Buena Vista in Biloxi, where we dined and danced to the music of Walter Blesseyas orchestra. Pledge week was more fun than it was last year when we were rats.', It kept us busy devising silly stunts and tasks for the pledges. Formal initiation ended the fun and once more we turned our attention to our studies. After Christmas, the new members gave us a return party. It was pleasant to sit back and enjoy the feeling of no responsibility in making arrangements. They treated us royally to a theatre party. The tri-sorority banquet during the last of May was a happy occasion which revealed concord not only within any one group but a spirit of deep friendliness among the separate Greek letter organizations. As a project in practical journalism we feel we are to be con- gratulated not only on the wealth of material at hand, but also on the close class cooperation, without which this issue would not have been possible. We acknowledge the limitations in the mechanical department, with the realization that these limita- tions have been only the mother of our present invention. It is with confidence in the possible future of such class projects and with pride in our first venture as well as in humility at its evi- dent shortcomings, that we are commending to our reading public this issue.
