WE, the Seniors of Gulf Park, feel that no tribute could be fine enough to contain the esteem in which we hold our Alma Mater. Through the understanding of our Miss Evans we have found guidance and inspira- tion. Cur year has been one full of happy thoughts. President and Mrs. Cox graciously entertained at a ban- quet early in October and at a tea in November. At the beginning of the year we gave our Winter Formal. We joined the Class of thirty-three to redecorate the Senior sun parlor, and we celebrated its completion with a tea honoring Miss Evans. It is our hope that all Senior Classes will find as much enjoyment in using the room as we found in the planning and furnishing of it. Spring and time to part from the sunlit gulf and lovely campus came all too soon, but with it came the knowledge that our standards will be carried on by our Torchbearers. The last eventful days are unforgettable. Baccalaureate service made us realize in a sincere way the duties that lie before us. Class Day with the solemn ritual by which we gave to the Junior Class beautiful Friendship Oak typifying Gulf Park ideals was enhanced by the fragrant gardenia chain held by Juniors forming an aisle through which we passed. Then came the night of graduation un- der the Southern starlit slcy. The air was laden with gay flower perfume, and the feathery green bamboo hedge swayed softly as we stood on the platform with our arms full of red roses and our hearts Hooded with joy. Ours are memories of a wonderful year and an ideal graduation at Gulf Park' ELLEN WITWER. Seniors at Gu if Part Miss WILIETTA EVANS, Sponsor 9 ELLEN WITWER . . . Memories of all the joys and under- takings of the school year, now ended, rush through their minds. They gloat over their frequent acquisitions of his majesty, the goat, in athletic games. A smile Hits for an in- stant over their faces as they remember the Junior chapel skit - Episode No. 49 of True Blue Harold, an original panto- mime written by one of the members of the music classes. The sound of dance music briefly re-echoes in their ears-the Junior prom with its soft lights, silhouetted windows, brilliantly col- ored balloons, gaiety. Then one by one the faces of the Junior statistics winners Hash on the ever living screen of memory- the most original, the most talented, the most athletic, and the best sport. Now the Juniors smile again in recalling the Junior- Senior Ship Island outing-the long, happy holiday in the spring, which is their parting gift to the Seniors. Over the smooth waters of the Gulf they sail and bask in the sunshine on the sandy shore as they relive that day. Perhaps it is the imaginary salty spray that brings tears into the Juniors, eyes. Perhaps they are thinking about the solemn torchbearers service only a short time ago. They bow their heads in the realization that tomorrow their old yet beloved rivals, the Seniors, will be graduating, scatter- ing themselves to the far corners of the country. Slowly the Juniors raise their heads and stand erect, full of courage for the coming year, in which they will reign supreme on the shady campus of Gulf Park-by-the-Sea. CHRISTINE ZOLLER. Texas So omores SOPHOMORE CLASS the Sophomore Class, started the year off in a big way with my cap- , ture of the famous Gulf Park Goat at the swimming and diving meet held in October. No sooner was I over that than along came Sing Song. It was a big event, and great was the preparation weeks before- hand. To be sure, I had only two short acts to prepare, but I wanted those to be the very best. IVhen all my work was over, the stunt repaid meg for it went off very smoothly. In the first act I showed the audience land, incidentally, the -ludgesj Gulf Park as it would have been in the Gay Nineties. I brought in all the paraphernalia-bicycles, old- fashioned bathing suits, long tennis skirts, etc., and then the glorihed croquet team winning the 1890 Goat. In contrast, I presented in the second act Gulf Park as it is today, with myself, of course, taking pos- session of the Goat in hockey. It wasn't the idea that I grit it, though, for it's the spirit of the Goat and working for it, whether in the Nineties or today, that really counts. The hockey season came and went with some representation for me. I played junior Class in the finals and we tied. Sh: had a score a little higher than mine, though, so the Goat was given to her. Basketball season-and again the older classes defeated me but not by a very large margin. I was proud of my scores. I also gave a dance this year and invited Freshman Class. The auditorium was beautiful, a perfect bower of spring flowers and vines which I made myself. I looked lovely and I had a wonderful time! Like my sister classes, every Thursday night at dinner I had several tables to myself which I really enjoyed. I always took that opportunity to sing my songs. lNIy trip to Ship Island is one of my most pleasant memories. I started early and the trip across the water was delightful. I had a good time swimming in the surf, lying on the sand, and lazily basking in the sun to acquire a tan, although I had more blisters than tan when I returned! IXIy graduation was incomparably beautiful. I shall never forget it. Ifven though it is all over, I still have memories of my Gulf Park days to cherish. I,oRN.x Iain ,mn Emmy Lou. DIVING and Water Sports The Inter-Class Swimming Meet on October 11 was the first event of inter-class competition this school year. The meet included races, form swimming, relays, and diving. The Sophomores kept the goat. October 1 was Water Sports Day. The par- ticipants were not necessarily good swimmers and divers. Girls took part for the fun of it. Each class gave a stunt. There were challenges, un- usual relays, and original dives. Everybody, on- lookers as well, thoroughly enjoyed it. Rozwzn : l've just returned from the annual Delta Chi dance which was really a beautiful affair. I would have enjoyed it, but I had on my roommate's shoes, and as she wears a number five and I, a six, well, draw your own conclusions! Also, my date kept insisting I didn't un- derstand him and that he was a peculiar fellow. The girls were lovely, in that frightened am I going overl' fashion. This Delta Chi party was quite different from the first one at the beginning of the year which was a rush party given at the hut. No one knew quite what to do and the old girls were so sweet trying to make us feel at ease, but all they would get would be a No a Yes and a quizzical look. However, after awkwardly spilling coffee down the president's neck and wrecking the decorations over the fire- place, I felt relaxed and had a marvelous time. In fact, all the Delta Chi parties were a success, especially the one at the llilarkham Hotel. This was a dance given for the rushees and everyone had a good time. VVell I joined: and the first thing I knew, a return party was being planned for de lodge sestahsf' A dinner dance to be given at the Edgewater Gulf was decided on, and so I raised my hand with the rest of them. It was a gorgeous affair with marvelous food, good music, and beautiful surroundings, not to mention thirty wonderful girls to dance with, not a man in sight, except two or three waiters, and some- one's sense of humor got a little too rough and tripped one of them. He was carrying a tray of frozen salad. However, even this didn't cool off the party. A few of us laughed but the rest were nice enough to overlook it. I must close now and run, as I see one of those sweet girls coming with a check book in hand. But I must say, Ilirs. Rowan, that I've never enjoyed anything quite as much as the Delta Chi parties this year. Sincerely yours, SAMMIE Jos. PAGE I08 JEAN KAISER . ANNE BULLOCK . GRAHAM HINSON . IVIOLLIE ALLEN JAGOE . Dear Sigma ljsfs: I was still in a daze when rush parties began in October, but, anyway, all the sororities clubbed together on a progressive supper and the sorority I chose supplied the dessert. You know our capacity for ice cream and candy-the latter was pralines. WVhile we were eating, l found out that Gulf Park girls are talented, for clever song and tap dance numbers were in order. Oh, yes! l guess one might think that all this was done out on the Gulf! NVell, it wasn't. The first course was in the HY hut, the second, in a sun parlor, and the third, in the art studio. Of course, the old girls of the sorority had to give their pledges a party. It was a luncheon at the Tivoli Hotel topped off with a movie- Bing Crosby in Too Nluch l-larmony. l mustn't leave off the pretty part of our luncheon-dainty corsages for each guest. Qliorgive that word zlnirztyj A little time passed and then Rat VVeek was announced. Shall I ever forget it? Screams from morning till night-from basement to attic: all sorts of costumes. VVe had to carry our books in a laundry bag, paint one eyebrow, wear odd socks, odd shoes, and an old stock- ing cap. No other make-up was permitted. NVhat freaks! I believe old Barnum himself would have enjoyed a look at the appearances we made. A few days later, we were initiated in true solemnity. On the twenty-ninth of January, the new Sigma Psi's luncheon- theater party for the old sisters took place. This time, we went to the Edgewater Gulf. The day was like a spring day-everyone wore light coats. The luncheon tables were decorated with carnations, and, once again, all the guests were presented with corsages. The meal over, we piled into the busses bound for the picture, fllr. Siifvli. XVill Rogers' cracks made the luncheon set a bit better. But this letter, even as the school year, must come to an endl Une of ours, Doizornv G.fxRinA1,pi. PAGE Il2 DELTA 4' O F F I C E R S FLORENCE XVOCDS . President LEALIAS BROTHERS . . Dear Delta: Of all the events of the year, the one most gala, for the Delta Alpha's at least, was the Delta Alpha formal on Saturday evening, Rlarch the tenth. VVe indulged in great preparations which made it, from our point of view, the prize winning social occasion at Gulf Park. That was a grand affair, for, you know, G. P. C. has really lovely social life, every event is more lovely than the past. This will be a fine climax to the Delta Alpha year, which has been an endless stream of gay affairs since I wrote you at the beginning of the year. Delta Alyha graced the progressive dinner, given by the three sororities, at the meat course, serving it faultlessly in the Delta Alpha sun parlor. The Delta Alpha's contributed all of their social powers toward making this get-acquainted affair a grand success-such it was! The rush party turned out to be wonderful for everybody. Bly. what a glorious time we had! One lvlonday in October, all the mem- bers and their rushees piled into busses for a ride to Buena Vista for luncheon and the show afterwards. The luncheon was delicious, the show was a hit. The Delta Alpha's proved they knew what a really good time was. Hell-VVeek displayed all the Delta Alpha genius for thinking up foolishness for its pledges-who were forced to wear all kinds of hu- miliating garb. One day it was black cotton stockings, the next, hair parted in the middle and braided in all directions. There were seven full days of such evidences of folly, furnishing fun for everybody. ln contrast, initiation in the Art Studio was truly lovely and inspiring-not easy to be forgotten in its beauty and dignity. St. Val- entine's Day, its history in pantomime, was enacted on February 16, in assembly. Of course, it was clever, showing another phase of Delta Alpha talent. Now when the commencement sorority banquet proves to be as wonderful as we hope it to be, Delta Alpha will have made a conclu- sion to its social calendar, entirely in keeping with its prestige in the social life of G. P. C. Affectionately, ALPHA. CAdele Clitheroj PAGE II6 ---v' J, ..,-. . Q. - , .-1 A H- ' 51- -'-Aff:-yr' iw., Q.-i, 'aw ,Ag ijijr-xl ' Nr, 4 V' I .L ix ., s K . ,I 'Al ,. .,. X, dub. , xx- , .
