He got his first job on the ninthg he left home for the first time on the ninthg he was married on the ninth, which was an occasion for re- i g ' joicingg his wife left him on the ninth, which was ano-ther occasion for rejoicing. Practically everything of importance which happened to him happened to him on the ninth or somehow through the aid of nine. VVhen the nine did not appear alo-ne, neat and intact, he would manipulate days, months and years so as to make the numbers add up to nine or to be divisible by nine. For example, he was made cashier of the bank on the fourteenth of lklarch, the third month. At first sight there seems to be no way of getting nine out of that combination, but not for a mo-ment did the problem bother him. He was forty-six years old when this event took placeg therefore he simply added forty-six to fourteen and three and made sixty-three! He worked a great deal of sense along with a great deal of nonsense into this ob- session. As a child he used to fly into terrible rages, but as he grew older, he learned to control himself in critical moments with nine deep breaths. He chewed his food nine times, which was a happy medium between the Gladstone and American plan. On important occasions he counted nine before replying. He would take nine hours or nine days, or nine Weeks even, before making a grave decision. S0 after working for nine months on an air-tight plan to loot the bank, he carried out his scheme when he was fifty-four years of age-nine, notice-and withdrew the first bonds-nine of them -on the ninth of September, the ninth month. It was very simple. He took the last bond from its place on the following ninth of June, but he bided his time and let nine more weeks pass before making his disap- pearance. That was very simple also. He merely had to cross the State bridge over the river, drive to bladison, make himself known there and, returning by the back road, miss the upper plank bridge and drive into the river. The automobile would be found, but bodies were never found there. No one even seriously looked for them. They were swept away almost immediately by the swirling waters out to the ocean. Then he would change his clothes, walk into Pompton and take the 22.1.0 express for Canada. Every bond which he carried in his bag was as good as currency in blon- treal. He had one Canadian passport which he would use for identification, but he would sail for Europe on still another one. He left his house at nine o'clock when it was still dusk. He deliberately pulled up beside Mose Shire on Blain Street and conversed with him until he felt sure lWose would remember where he had said he was going and what he was wearing. He had never felt less nervous or more sure of himself. He swung onto the Pompton turn- pike two minutes later and headed north. The presence of the bonds in the luggage space behind him did not bother him in the least, but he drove with unusual caution. For in spite of all his caution in other matters, he was generally more of a reckless than a careful driver. But tonight he drove cautiously. He could take no chances Page one hundred thirty-sefven now that he was actually embarked on his getaway. If anything happened, and the bonds were in the car, he might just as well prepare himself for a sojourn in gaol in- stead of a holiday in Europe. A bank cashier riding around at nine o'clock with ninety thousand dollars worth of paper which was presumably resting safe against moths and corruption in the innermost vaults of a highly protected institution would have at- tracted fatal attention, to say the least, so he drove carefully, slowly. There was virtually no trafhc on the road, however, and not a car passed him until he was within a quarter mile of the bridge. Then a roadster with rumble seat oc- cupied swept by him. A moment later, a large touring car roared past, followed by I1 sedan. He rounded the curve over the crest of the rise from which the road slanted to a bridgehead and saw the three cars speed across. He mo-ved down the incline to the bridge, gently holding back with his brakes. He had scarcely gone twenty yards on the bridge when a man, swinging a red light and carrying a shotgun, stepped di- rectly in front of him. He jammed on his brakes and stopped dead, almost before he realized that he had stopped. Then he would have given anything in the world not to have stopped. Only o-n second thought, as he glanced wildly to one side and saw two other men standing behind one of the bridge pillars, also armed with shotguns, did he realize that if he had not stopped, he would have been stopped. The man with the red light approached him. A star gleamed on his chest. He was the typical small town sheriff with the usual rolling cud of tobacco-. He laid his elbow on the window ledge of the car and spat. To save his life, the cashier could not have said a word then. He was terror stricken as though in the presence of Fate itself. Clit outf' ordered the man. I'm agoin' to search yore car. f'VVhat do you mean you are going to search my car? he managed to gasp. VVhat are you afteriw 'LI know what I'm after, said the old man. Git out. It wasn't the words he obeyed, it was the tone in which they were spoken-and the three shotguns. The o-ld man lifted the cushion on which the cashier had been sitting, felt around in the space it had covered, restored it, and stepped down from the running board and moved to the rear. The cashier had locked the compartment there and now in terror he demanded again what he was being searched for. The little old man ignored him with the satisfaction of an authority that knew its rights, and took the ignition key out of the dashboard. The key was attached to a book of keys among which was the key to the storage compartment. In a frenzy of despair and fury the cashier lunged at the old man. The other two gripped him, and the old man regarded him with little, baleful eyes. The cashier pulled out his pocketbook and produced his card. l'Look at that! Read it! he cried hysterically. 'lYou'll see who I am. The old man read it. Hm. Cashier, eh ?'l he said, and spat. He retraced his steps to the rear of the car, unlocked it and threw it 0-pen. First he brought out and opened the bundle which contained the clothes and spectacles and furnishings with which the cashier had intended to redress and dis- guise himself. Then he pulled out the traveling bag. It was not locked, and the old man opened it and peered inside by the aid of his lantern. He cocked his head like a bird sighting a wo-rm and brought the bag around front to the headlights. Page one hundred llzuiy ezglzl Bly God, man! the cashier burst out. Tell me what you are looking for! The old man crouched over the bag. He put his fist in the bag. VVal, he said, drawing out a Hstful of bonds. I'm looking for cornborers. Cornborers l almost shrieked the cashier. Yeh, said the old man. It's agi'n the law to bring corn into this State. Cornborersl cried the cashier in crazed indignation. For heaven's sake, what makes you look for cornborers with a shotgun F The old man drew out ano-ther fistful of bonds. He spat. VVal,'l he said, almost friendly, I'1l tell you. It's surprisin' the things people carry with 'em, and almost equally surprisin' the fuss some of 'em puts up over bein' stopped. I've been shot at so often that t'other day I made up my mind that come here after any shootin' that was go-in' to be done, I was the one that was goin' to do it. YVhat's more, he added primly, the law's behind me. He gave his cud a quick little roll, spat again, and pulled out of the bag two 'chin black books and opened them. Yeh, he said slowly, staring at the cashier's Canadian passports and the photo- graphs which adorned them. Yeh, he repeated slowly, It's agi'n the law to bring foreign corn into this State. He looked from the passports to the cashier. He stared at him thoughtfully. The cashier stared back, as rigid as though he were having his picture taken. The old man looked at the passports again. Une was adorned with a photograph of the cashier in a shaggy mustache and shell-rimmed spectacles. The other showed him as a dapper gentleman in waxed mustache and trimmed Van Dyke. The cashier stared fascinated at the old man looking at those photographs. Wal, said the old man after a long pause, this is certainly interesting, Cashier, eh? Boys, jess grab his armsf, The old man stuffed bonds and passports into the bag and put it into the car. He drew out an ancient pair of handcuffs and approached the cashier. But the cashier held back. Cornborers! he cried hysterically. Cornborersl VVhat made you pick on me? I saw three cars go across the bridge right ahead of me and never stop. VVhy didn't you sto-p them ? VVhy, said the old man, surprised, you can't stop every car, can you? But what made you stop me P You, why you were the ninth, weren't you? Ninth-ninth ? the cashier echoed weakly, swaying as though the whole of his universe were crumbling beneath his feet. What made you pick on nine ? VVhat made me pick on nine ?', said the old man, taking the cashier's hands and gently slipping the handcuffs over his wrists. VVhy, nine's my lucky number. Wl1at's yours ? Its radiant sun- shine, balmy salt-laden breezes, equable climate, historic background, and beauty spots with which nature has so kindly endowed it, have become re- nowned over an entire nation. It is also our realization that all of these recom- mending endowments would be incomplete if the educational facilities of this section were not ade- quate to make of this a well-balanced place for home or sojourn. Gulf Park College most superbly cares for that need. It is a school of which any community might be proud, and one to which the most ex- acting may look with a full measure of assurance that its equipment, environment, location and cur- riculum are all that could be desired. VVe are proud of Gulf Park College and its student body. FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF GULFPORT Parents The Aristocrat of Southern Tav- erns bids you welcome.
