The Boat That is Left Alone Whenever l walk to Gulfport along the sea-worn beach, l notice a poor old schooner, with its sides all broken and beat. I suppose l've passed it a hundred times, but l always stop and say, O, look at that schooner, that poor old schooner, that schooner that's thrown away l never have seen a storm-wrecked boat, though l hear such a thing can be, With its decks and masts asunder torn, and sunk to the depths of the sea. l know this boat wasn't storm-wrecked, though I wish sometimes such were true- That its ragged sails and shattered hull had been lost in the surging blue. This boat on the beach at Gulfport needs a keel and a rudder, too: And somebody ought to right the mast and fit it with tackle new. lt needs some paint and ladders, and some rods to make a new rail. But what it needs the most of all is someone to set it asail. lf l had a lot of money and all my debts were paid, l'd put a gang of men to work with hammer and saw and spade l'd buy that boat and fix it up, the way it used to be, And l'd find some skipper who knew his work and l'd let him set asea. Now a new boat standing dry-docked, all ready to brave the gale, Looks idle, perhaps quite foolish, like a hat on its block at a saleg But there's nothing mournful about it, it can't be sad and lone For the lack of something it has never had, something it has never known. But a boat that has done what a boat should do, a boat that has manned the sea, A boat that has sailed out proudly from dock and been on the glorious leeg A boat that has carried cargoes in defiance of tempests high ls the saddest sight when left alone that ever you would descry. So whenever l go to Gulfport along where the water rolls high l never go by that worn-out boat without stopping to heave a sigh, For it hurts me to look at the crumbling deck and the mast-heads falling apart, Since I can't help thinking that the poor old boat is a boat with a broken heart.
