A 47,000 square foot Greensboro Division was purchased, and additional classroom space was rented in High Point and at the Regional Airport. Plans were begun for a 30,000 square foot Health Careers Building on the Jamestown capmus to compliment the $3.24 million Campus Center Learning Resource Center complex under construction. It was a year of expansion and development... a year of continued service to individuals seeking knowledge as well as business and industry who seek well- trained, highly qualified employees. And for GTI, it was was a year of challenge to maintain the Institute’s high status. 165

So reads the story of Guilford Technical Institute’s climb from its 1967 existence as one of the smallest members of the Community College System to its present status as the largest of the technical institute members. The 1973-74 academic year, like its predecessors, was filled with continuous examples of progress. Nearly 20,000 individuals enrolled in at least one GTI program of instruction.

Awareness of Guilford County’s educational needs is fundamental to Guilford Technical Institute’s Operation. Instructional programs are continually structured toward these needs and maintained at the highest level of quality. Accreditation by nationally recognized agencies is a direct reflection on the quality of instructional programs. During 1973-74 academic year, GTI underwent accreditation examinations from five agencies: the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools: the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association; the State Board of Nursing: the Educational Council for Professional Development; and the State Department of Community Colleges. A favorable report has been UPPER RIGHT: Albert P. Lochra, Dean of Student Services’ LOWER LEFT: Thurman A. Horney, Dean of Evening Programs. LOWER RIGHT: Mertys W. Bell, Dean of Learning Resources received or is expected from each agency. Community surveys and feasibility studies are two of the methods by which GTI maintains a continual awareness of community needs. New programs in carpentry and electrical installation and maintenance are being organized asa result of the latest surveys and studies. Awareness of community needs is important. And when awareness is coupled with response in the form of low-cost, quality instruction, the result is service to the total community..... students and their potential employers as well. It is for these reasons that the doors of Guilford County’s most unique educational institution swing wide to serve the needs of people.
