An unsuccessful assas- sination attempt on the life of presidential hopeful George Wal- lace upset the 1972 election campaigns in which many Guil- ford students participated, sup- porting Richard Nixon, George McGovern, Danieo Walker and Richard Ogilvie. Break throughs in the Paris peace talks became evident a few weeks prior to the elections with a peace treaty signed on January 27, 1973. POW's returned in the first months of the new year. ln the fall of 1972, mainland China was admitted into the Unit- ed Nations, and in the following year Nixon traveled to China in hopes of improving foreign relations.
