The major purpose for naming these twenty seniors to Top Ten is to recognize outstanding scholastic achieve- ment and to provide a group of students from which to choose the two commencement speakers. Nine Guilford seniors qualified as finalists in the Na- tional Merit Scholarship Program. These students were chosen on the basis of their achievement on the Qualify- ing Test taken last spring and on other forms--chiefly the Scholastic Aptitude Test. They were notified of their rank in February. Winners of the four-year scholarships were notified confidentially late in March, and the awards, given on a national level, were made public in April. Leters of Commendation were also presented to the following Guilford students who scored highly on the Qualifyin g Test: john Borner Ray Brown Philip Burns Roger Caruana Susan Cederstrom Carol Cibelius Bruce Hammond Steven Hollon Thomas Larsen Philip Lowe Sara Neustadtl john Olson David Wedge Michael Williams
