I feel that everyone involved with Guilford College serves to better the whole of the institution in whatever capacity he or she may perform. I have chosen to list the names of all administrators and staff picturing those with whom all students at Guilco interact on a regular basis. As a small token of gratitude from the entire student body and in recognition of a job well-done, I dedicate the following poem to the faculty, staff, and administration at Guilford College IF If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you. If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting you: If you can wait and not be tired by waiting. Or being lied about, don ' t deal in lies, Or being hated, don ' t give way to hating, And yet don ' t look too good, nor talk too tvise: If you can dream — and not make dreams your master: If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim: If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same: If you can bear to hear the truth you ' ve spoken Twisted by knives to make a trap for fools. Or watch the things you gave your life to. broken. And stoop and build ' em up with worn-out tools: If you can make on heap of all you winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss. And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss: If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone. And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will ivhich says to them: Hold on If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue. Or walk with Kings — nor lose the common touch. If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you. If all men count with you, but none too much: If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds ' worth of distance run. Yours is the Earth and everything that ' s in it. And — which is more — you ' ll be a Man, my son. TO A DANCING GOD Submitted by — Mogomotsi Lentsoe In Memoriam Of Charlotte Degroot Born — February 17, 1963 Died — August 25, 1983 We do not cry when we think ot people we love; we smile. We smile because knowing them makes us a part of something that can be felt but cannot be seen or touched , yet we know it to have more value than any possession we could ever own. Charlotte gave us a ready smile and encouragement for tomorrow. When we think of her, we think of all she gave and all that we have to remember and love and cherish. Each of Charlotte ' s friends must deal with their loss in an individual way. My counsel to those who knew her is taken from reflection upon the Charlotte that I knew. Have the wisdom to love, to live, to take what fate the gods may give. Hold your face to the sun and be inspired by her warmth. t- • t i i hric Locklear John McFall Caroline Bagby David Bradley W Sara S. Each of us must at one time or another fail victim to its ploy and act upon the cards which are dealt to us. Often we must play our hand in the shadow of another ' s misfortune. The game is one having little pity on its players. It is designed to offer each of us alternatives, but in the end, we make our own decisions. The participants decide for themselves whether or not they shall benefit from the fates of others. The loss of a fellow player must be felt and grief must be dealt with but, in respect to those fallen, we must not allow ourselves to martyr such a loss. First, in the capacity of editor of THE 1984 QUAKER, I should like to speak to those circumstances which precipitated my diverting from the tradition of the Guilford College yearbook being issued in the fall upon completion of the preceding year. For reasons unknown to me in entirety, the QUAKER preceding the 1984 edition failed to reach the hands of the students at Guilford College during the course of the 1 983 year and at the time at which I am writing this piece, the book remains in limbo. A yearbook is an object of importance to those whose memories are recorded in its pages and, like a fine burgundy, its value increases with age. Its significance must not be allowed to decline as it is a source ot morale and an uplifting force to the spirits of those whom it serves. My staff and I recognized that the plight of the issue preceding ours might prove detrimental to the student-body morale and thus blemish all future editions of THE QUAKER including the 1 984 edition. We felt that under the precarious and extraordinary circumstances surrounding the publishing of THE 1983 QUAKER, the 1984 edition and the student body might best be served hy issuing the book during the course of the same year — thus necessitating a spring delivery date and a February completion date. All activities occuring in the spring of 1984 which have not been covered in this portion of THE QUAKER will be covered in a supplement to the book wh ich will be given to the student body (or shipped ti i the graduating seniors) in the fall of 1984. The supplement will fit into the original hook and become a permanent fixture of the publication. My staff and I have worked diligently in obtaining this goal and in some cases, because ot the short time sp.in involved in our production of the book, style and format have been altered in our endeavors to serve our fellow students. We trust though that this will enhance the uniqueness of THE 1984 QUAKER. On another note, as a student observer on the Guilco campus and as a connoisseur omie-lJ iftarts principals upon which this institution is forged, I would like to comment on the 1984 Syndrome originating with George Orwell. Orwell ' s futuristic narrative is not so much a prophesizing of Big Brother but rather a negative statement suggesting that mankind ' s individualism will degenerate to a prototype organism and a society will evolve in which this archetype is robotized. In the shadow of the micro-chip and the apparent dependancy upon it to solve all crises, the reality of such a concept is not beyond the sphere of plausibility. As a optimist and a humanist, I believe that we, the students of the hberal arts, are inclined to pride ourselves on the abihty to arrive at independent conclusions drawn from a wide area of resources such as the sciences, the ans, etc. This quality, indigenous to our genre, preserves individuality in the face of the frightening flux of apathy whiL h has come to dominate our society. Oddly enough, this compulsion to conform seems to stem from the youth of today whose unwillingness to utilize the innate freedom of youth (to experience and explore new prospects) is a moral and intellectual betrayal of one of its most treasured bastions. I remain firm in the conviction that we, as upholders of the liberal arts will, even as a minority of the populus, continue to upset the seas of apathy which engulf our civilization and thus forever postpone the threat of Orwell ' s 1984 . My assurance of this lies in the character of the Class of 1 984 to whom I wish the best of success and the richest of futures. Thank you for allowing me to have served you.
