This educational concept is concerned with the development of the total personality and includes at least five areas of the learning process: To make the student aware of the historicol orientation of man ' s intellectual end spiritual achievements ... to introduce him to bosic recurring ideas and problems confronting him and to the attempted solutions that man has given to his intellectuol and spiritual queries ... to inform the student concerning the basic scientific methods and dato thot have been collected about nature and man ... to cultivote contmuolly on appreciation of his rich and significant aesthetic heritage ... to teach him to ottain on ever deepening insight into his moral ond spiritual nature. Learning and the complete growth of students Qre greotty focilitoted when the community of teachers and scholars IS relottvely small and where the individuol can be identified and made a responsible creative unit of the fellowship. Today great stress is being placed on excellence. For this to be more than a mere slogon it must be achieved through high intellectual, social, morol, and spiritual performonce. This excellence is also reflected m the quolity of the fellowship and in the mutual acceptonce of the high purposes and goals of the community of scholors, and finolty attested by the developed high-mindedness of the olumni of the liberal arts college. Mony yeors ago a motto was chosen for the college and it is impressed on every document thot uses the officiol seal of the institution. The motto is: I am applying myself to wisdom and virtue.
