127 YEARS OF CONTINUOUS Guilford College has had a long and memoroble history in the 127 years that it has been in existence. It IS fitting that we Look back on some of the notable events of the post which have made Guilford college the thriving, liberal arts institution that it is today. The original name of Guilford College was New Garden Boarding School Nathan Hunt and Jeremiah Hubbard were the instigators of the construction of the school, which was sponsored by Yearly Meetings in the United States and England. The charter stated that there should be coeducation, teacher training, provisions for scholarships, and a selected student body In 1837, the construction of Founder ' s Hall was completed There were two superintendents and three teachers to instruct the limited number of students It was a small, but significant beginning. In the early days, Nathan Hunt brought the school financial and spiritual aid, Dougan and Asenath Clark (Superintendents) brought it well being, and Nereus Mendenhall brought it intellectual eminence, There were many near economic disasters to New Garden Boarding School. EDUCATION Isham Cox, kept the school m run ning order in those tremendously hard times of the Civil War During the war, Francis T. King of the Baltimore Association to Advise and Assist Friends of Southern States come to North Carolina. He stay- ed, to become the leader of the movement for financial aid to New Garden Boarding School, As Mr, King helped with expansion of the school facilities and financial needs. Dr. Lewis L, Hobbs and Dr. Joseph Moore developed the liberal arts and sciences within the school Thus, in 1889, New Garden Boarding School was able to become Guilford College, Dr Lewis L, Hobbs was the first president. He and his wife, Mary Mendehall Hobbs, ex- panded Guilford College into a vig- orous and enterprising institution The whole of Dr. Hobbs ' administra- tion was a building period. Memor- ial Holl, Mary Hobbs Hall, the Li- brary, King Hall, and Cox Hall were built between 1897 and 1912 Dr, Hobbs became president Emeritus in 1915, after having established Guilford College upon a firm foundation, Dr Thomas New- lin became president He was short- ly followed by the distinguished Dr Raymond Binford. It was under Dr Binford that Guilford developed its new curriculum. The three-course curriculum, which was started with the college, blossomed forth into a new and broader program of study From this evolved the present core curriculum, which is the basis for the brood, liberal education one re- ceives at Guilford College today In 1934, Dr Clyde Milner be- came President of Guilford College Under his able leadership, Guilford College has strived to meet the dif- ficult challenges of the modern world There has been a great dea of transition and growth over the past two decades New buildings, financial aid, on apt faculty, worthy and responsible trustees, plus a student body with inquiring and stimulated minds, have made Guilford College an institution worthy of praise THE TOP.
