127 YEARS OF CONTINUOUS Guilford College has had a long and memoroble history in the 127 years that it has been in existence. It IS fitting that we Look back on some of the notable events of the post which have made Guilford college the thriving, liberal arts institution that it is today. The original name of Guilford College was New Garden Boarding School Nathan Hunt and Jeremiah Hubbard were the instigators of the construction of the school, which was sponsored by Yearly Meetings in the United States and England. The charter stated that there should be coeducation, teacher training, provisions for scholarships, and a selected student body In 1837, the construction of Founder ' s Hall was completed There were two superintendents and three teachers to instruct the limited number of students It was a small, but significant beginning. In the early days, Nathan Hunt brought the school financial and spiritual aid, Dougan and Asenath Clark (Superintendents) brought it well being, and Nereus Mendenhall brought it intellectual eminence, There were many near economic disasters to New Garden Boarding School.
