May Expand In Near future new facilities. Ihe goal of the de- partment is to have a fifty-piece band and orchestra besides build- ing up its already excellent choir. The main object sitbng in the way is time, lime to increase the number ot music majors, time to increase the faculty to teach the various courses that would have to be offered, and time to acquire in- struments and music for the devel- oping groups. Another thing blocking the ad- vancement of the music department is money. At the present time, be- cause previous]} tnere was no need tor it, there is no money available for instruments, music, or scholar- ships. Mr. Smyrt said, We hope to build the department to the point where scholarships can be justified, but it would seem to lighten the task of the people trying to enlarge the deparUnent if some scholarships were available beforehand. The other side of the picture seems much mure promising. All the things needed to fulfill the goal are just waiting for the big push. The facilities could not be more nearly ideal. There is ample room for instruction, rehearsal and per- forming. One of the main com- plaints in the old facilities was that these necessary functions could not be satisfactorily carried out with the equipment and onsors Sem. Coach Appenzeller ' s troops were young and inexperienced in the campaign ' s early stages, but the Quaker mentor regrouped his forces and by mid-season Guilford was no longer easy prey. After 19 consecutive unhappy football Saturday ' s, the Quakers resurrected with a thrilling 19-10 comeback win over Fredrick in a homecoming affair here. Then a few weeks later the Quakers upset Carolinas Conference for Catawba 7-3, in perhaps their finest hour of glory all season. And that was the day that Joye brought joy to Quakerville. J oy e, that ' s Bill Joye, of course, and he ' s the man who stepped off the electrifying 50-yard touchdown journey that stunned the partisian crowd. The seniors will be missed next year, but good luck to the boys who are returning on the squad. Coaches, KNEELING: La mbe rth , Appenzeller, Stewart. Go Up Boys oll 963 The 1962- ' 63 Quaker Squad Mike Allred Kuzma goes up Coach of the Year in his initial year as basketball mentor of Guilford College .... That ' s the rare distinction achieved by Jerrv Steele, former captain of the Wake Forest Basketball team, in his coaching bow with the Quakers. Steele ' s first Guilford edition compiled only a 5-20 record, but many of the losses were by close scores and came because of lack of depth and size to match the opposition. The men who choose the Coach of the year in NAIA District 26 took this into consideration in naming Steele to the honor. The fact that Steele made such a debut with a young Guilford team (all five starters return next season) is also worth noting. And among the players returning is Dan Kuzma, 6-foot 2 basketball bombardier who made All-Carolinas Conference, a goal seldom attained by a Guilford play- er. Bill Curran Kuzma, who possesses Kangaroo spring in his legs, towered tall and power - ful among the conference giants. I just couldn ' t say enough about Kuz, Steele said, as he began to heap praise on the versatile Quaker. I ' ll back anything that is said about him. The Matawan, N. J. product rocketed to his greatest season in the college ranks, the hustling junior jumping jack hammering in 478 points for a 19.1 average and finishing second in the loop scoring race. His finest moments came against Pem- broke when he al- most single - hand- edly felled the Indians with a devasting 45-point performance. He was equally effective off the boards. Kuzma was dueling nip-and-tuck for the conference ' s scoring crown going down the stretch, but a six-point showing in his curtain closing game against Campbell cast asunder his scoring king chances. His unselfish attitude is the thing that impresses me the most, Steele asserted, He could have gotten the points at Campbell, there ' s no question about it. But he thought our best chances of win- ning were to slow down. That hurt his scoring chances, but he was happy to sacrifice for the team. He ' s the kind of boy that had rather score five and win than score 35 and lose. Dangeared the Quakers ' rebounding game in superlative fashion, pulling down 14.4 per battle to lead the team in this department for the third straight year. He also placed on the first team all-conference squad. Kuzma ' s all-conference winning marks the first time a Quaker has pulled the trick since the heralded Don Line - berry roamed the court. Kuzma is real good in the pivot, Steel continued, but we should have him at forward. Again this points out the crucial height problem the Quaker mentor deals with. Kuzma drilled in 52.3 per cent of his shots from the floor to lead the club, and his 74 per cent from the charity stripe was good for second place finish in that department. Kuzma loomed as the Guilford big gun, ob- viously, but he got Elwu ' id Parker Bill Parker Yea ! ! ! Lucas strong support from the remaining cast. Lloyd Turlington, who rode the bench his freshman season, blossomed into a full fledged star in his sopho- more campaign. The former Goldsboro dandy rifled in 354 points for a 14.1 average per game. He fin- ished second to Kuzma in the point- making race. Lucas was death at the foul line, canning 84 per cent of his shots to top the club. Turlington has come a long way, Steele said, He has always been a good offensive player. Defense has been his weakness, but he ' s come a long way. Steele didn ' t hesitate to render praise to the remaining members of his corps either. Bill Shirley was real consistent, not flashy, but consistent, the Quaker men- tor said. Elwood Parker was ourquar- Wiison Rogers terback, and David Odom and Paul Up- degraph did a real good job at guard along with Fred Rabb and Mike All- red in the front court. Odom is a top notch defensive player and Up- degraph could pop ' em in from outside. Shirley, a transfer student, earned a starting job in early season and never relinquished his post. He scored a seven- point clip. Parker, vastly improved, turned in several ster- ling performances from his backline spot and and wound up as the third Quaker in double figures. The speedster fashion- ed 11.2 scoring mean. Updegraff, us- ing a deadly outside shooting touch, burned the cords for 18 points on one outing in the season ' s infancy and play- ed a vital role in the Quaker backcourt. Odom, who got a late start due to football, came on to do superb work by mid-season. Raab and Allred were the chief members of the front line serve troops. Bill Parker, V uson Rodgers, and Bill Curran are other members of the squad who could see action in the future with hard work, according to Settle. BRIGHT FUTURE? With all five of its starters returning along with its entire bench, Guilford basketball hopes should be looking up- -but not before it gets some big men to look up to.
