Gaiffofd QSae. . , George Fox began it back in England when, in 1668, he advised setting up schools ' for teaching whatsoever things was civil and useful in ye creation. ' . . .OnElev- enth Month, tenth, 1830, Nathan Hunt heard the still small voice bidding him speak and arose in the old meeting house to lay his concern over the state of education be- fore Friends. No sooner than he had seated himself there arose another moved by the same concern. This was Jeremiah Hubbard, who had been teaching in the little school house at New Garden, and he knew what he was talking of. He proposed the founding of a yearly meeting school, andthat school became Guilford College, for the yearly meeting caught the vision, and faith be- lieving, began toplanaschoolwhich has lasted a century and a quarter. In 1837 Founders Hall, built of brick made on the place, of timber cut from its hills, and of pine hauled from thirty to fifty miles by ox team, was finished. School opened on Eighth Month, first. Archdale and King Hall were added, and in 1889 New Garden Boarding School became Guilford College. (from STORY OF GUILFORD COLLEGE)
