Mr. e. MJkkrd THE OLD ORDER CHANGETH, YIELDING PLACE TO NEW. Tennyson Gaiffofd QSae. . , George Fox began it back in England when, in 1668, he advised setting up schools ' for teaching whatsoever things was civil and useful in ye creation. ' . . .OnElev- enth Month, tenth, 1830, Nathan Hunt heard the still small voice bidding him speak and arose in the old meeting house to lay his concern over the state of education be- fore Friends. No sooner than he had seated himself there arose another moved by the same concern. This was Jeremiah Hubbard, who had been teaching in the little school house at New Garden, and he knew what he was talking of. He proposed the founding of a yearly meeting school, andthat school became Guilford College, for the yearly meeting caught the vision, and faith be- lieving, began toplanaschoolwhich has lasted a century and a quarter. In 1837 Founders Hall, built of brick made on the place, of timber cut from its hills, and of pine hauled from thirty to fifty miles by ox team, was finished. School opened on Eighth Month, first. Archdale and King Hall were added, and in 1889 New Garden Boarding School became Guilford College. A men ' s dormitory to house 256 students and a women ' s dormitory to house 162 students will open their doors in September, 1962, enabling the college to increase its total enrollment to 850 students and its resident student body to 750. Plans are also being made for additions to the library, the dining hall, and the power plant. Now more students will be offered the opportunity for higher education and more students will be brought into the Christian fellowship of the college as campus residents. 12 7 i Ifc .. sw •;:■-. Varied as the rich music in the diversified repertoire, so is the membership of this group, representing a dozen religious denominations with singers from a number of states and foreign countries. Although sponsored by the Department of Music, membership is open to all students of the college. Although many concerts are given locally and within the state, the choir makes an extended tour each year during the spring vacation period. Buddy Dixon, end David Odom, quarterback Gary York, guard Guilford College ' s football team suffered three straight heart- breaking defeats in early season by a combined margin of eight points, enough to shatter any club ' s fondest dreams of a bright future--and apparently it did for the Quakers this year. Elondealt the Qiakers a staggering blow in its curtain raising, scoring twice in the last four minutes to wipe out an 8-0 Guilford lead and win by the slim margin of 12-8. Then came East Carolina the following week, and the Pirates pulled out a 17-15 victory in the fading moments, a costly Quaker error opening the victory doors. The third and last of these crucial blows came immediately after the loss to E.C.C. at the hands of underdog Randolph-Macon by the odd score of 6-4. According to Coach Herb Appenzeller and a number more Quaker followers these three close decisions definitely took their toll. There ' s just no telling what we might have done had we won even two of our first three, Appenzeller stated. The Quakes finished this year with nine losses and not a taste of victory. Appenzeller tabbed his club ' s performances against Elon, East Carolina, and Catawba. Eddie Williams, halfback. Despite a winless season, however, there were some bright moments in Qualterville this year. When award time rolled around after the gear had been hung up for another year, sophomore Buddy Dixon walked off with the Most Valuable Player award. Three other boys shared in the prize-taking honors. Tom Waters, a senior from Goldsboro who missed the last three games of the campaign due to injuries, was voted the best tackier on the team for the second straight year. Senior Co-captain Frank Simpson, a home grown product, swept the outstanding blocking award, and Eddie Williams was tabbed the best hustler of the squad. Dixon, a speedster from Murfreesboro, was used at halfback, end, and ran back punts and kickoffs. We tried to utilize his talents to the fullest extent, his coach re- marked. Senior guard Walter Wiggins, another Goldsboro boy, gained honorable mention on the Little All-American selection. Quite an honor, c ons ider ing our record, Appenzeller pointed out. Sophomore Larry Addleton turned in brilliant performances at quarterback all year long. A steady performer, Addleton led the team in scoring with five touchdowns and 30 points. He ' ll be back for a couple more years and Appenzeller isn ' t crying about that. To mention a few more who played starring roles were center Jack Holley, guards David Wells and Sherrill Doby, tackle Charlie Abernethy, end Tommy Barnes, and halfbacks Tom Bowers, Ray Durham, Ken Hedrick, and Bobby O ' Daniel. Wells, who hails from Teacheys, probably saw more action than any other man on the squad. He could be termed the 60-minute man. He was very definitely one of our better linemen, Appenzeller stressed. Holley gained honorable mention All-Conference in spite of his being hampered by in- juries throughout the season. Commenting on the kicking game, the Quaker boss spoke in a delightful tone. The reason --Bill Joye. Joye, a freshman flash from Garner, placed second in the league in punting in his rookie season and boomed severalpunts over 60 yards. His longest boot came against Lenoir-Rhyne a towering 69 yarder. ' Another highly touted first year man who saw plenty of action was Gary York. York turned out to be one of our finest freshman performers, said Appenzeller. He did a real good job in there at guard. Little was said about the coming campaign, but Appenzeller and his staff are eyeing a better season, despite heavy losses from this year ' s club. There are several promising youngsters who will be counted on along with the few veterans to provide new sinues of foot- ball strength for Guilford. (A. J. Carr) Action against E.C.C. in 90 weather. I BS M K 1961- ' 62 Seven wins and nineteen losses isn ' t an impressive record for any basketball team, but that mark doesn ' t paint a true picture of Guilford College ' s cagers this past season. After suffering through a miserable 1-19 season a year ago, Coach Clyde Parrish proved himself as a builder in his second campaign here. Even though the record isn ' t impressive, it shows vast improvement over the teams in the past. The 7-19 slate posted this year is the best mark a Quaker club has enjoyed in five seasons. In fact, it is more wins than the teams over the past five years have chalked up combined. The major drawback on the ' 61 - ' 62 quint, according to Parrish, was the lack of board strength. Even though the Quakes owned one of the top rebounders in the Carolinas Con- ference in the person of Dan Kuzma, they still did not possess the overall height to cope with gigantic league powers like Western Carolina, Lenoir-Rhyne, etc. As far as shooting accuracy goes, the Quakes could battle on even terms with most any club. It was that second, third, and fourth shot the opponents got that spelled Quaker doom, on most occasions. And speaking of shooting, Parrish had all guns firing full blast in Charleston, S. C, as Guilford demolished the College of Charleston 107-69 to set a school mark for most points scored in a single game. The 107 tallies erased the old record set in ' 53 when the Quakes filled the baskets with 103 points against Atlantic Christian. It was only the third game of the season that Guilford played the role of a giant killer. Highly rated Appalachian rode into town expecting an easy night, but that was not the case. The Mountaineers left weeping as the smaller Quakers d i s h e d out (continued on page 133) Jubilant fans and players about to hoist Coach Clyde Parrish to their shoulders after victory over Appalachian. Quakers ' Kuzma, Bears ' Wells battle in rough board play. m s- ■' ' ■f : ' U a 64-63 upset in the waning moments--the upset of tlie year at that time. Another thriller occurred at Atlantic Christian about mid-season when Dan Kuzma grabbed his own rebound alter missing a charity toss and stuffed in the winning bucket with 20 seconds showing on the clock for a 62-60 triumph. BURWELL TOPS SCORERS . . . ENDS BRILLIANT CAREER . . . If there ever was a place for the little man in col- lege basketball Jon Burwell filled it to capacity. The 5-foot, 10 inch, 175 pound senior who made high school All America before coming here, stepped into the starting lineup his freshmanyear and has been there ever since. Burwell proved himself a full fledged star right off the bat and averaged around the 12 point mark for three straight seasons. This year, he reached his career high for the most points scored in a single season and also topped the 1000 point career total. The classy backcourtman slammed in 360 points for a 14.4 scoring average in leading the club in point- making for the first time. Utilizing his deadly jump shot to the fullest, he rang up 1060 points in his four years here. He stepped down from the college ranks as one of Guilford ' s all time greats. Hot shooting Dan Kuzma was hot on Burwell ' s trail for the scoring crown with 355 points. Kuzma, 6 ' 3 , 190 pounder, held the hottest shooting hand of all Quakes with one of the conference ' s top marks percentage-wise. He connected on 57.7 per cent of his shots from the floor. A terror under the boards, for the second consecu- tive season he led the team in rebounding with 13.8 recoveries per contest and finished among the top re- bounders in the league. Sophomore Wayne Wyckoff was the only other starter hitting in double figures. He dumped in 261 points for a 12.4 average and pulled down 7.9 rebounds a game. Mike Allred, whogotoffto a slow start, but finished inaflurry, just missed double figures with a 9.6 average. Allred, sophomore from Mt. Airy, flipped in the most points in a single game this season, hitting 28 against Campbell in his finest hour in college basketball. Ken Ward, 6 ' 6 center, threw in nine points per contest in the 17 games in which he played. He did not see action in the final nine games. Other boys who saw plenty of action throughout the season were Elwood Parker, Fred Rabb, Bill Curran, Lloyd Turlington, Paul Updegraff, Montie Milner, co- captain Tom Whitely, Roy Williams, and Jerry Hodge. Parker stepped in and filled a starting position in the season ' s final stages. FRESHMEN STANDOUTS A couple of freshmen who should make the headlines more than once before finishing are Loyd Turlington and Fred Raab. Both saw a great deal of action this year and both will be counted on heavily in the Quaker ' s future plans. Team statistics show that Guilford was outscored by the opposition 74.8 per contest to 66.4. It was, how- ever, the lowest opponents scoring average in a number ofyearsastwo years ago the opposition enjoyed ringing up over 93 points a game against the Quakers. Parrish ' s crewconnectedon43per cent of its shots from the floor and 71.4 per cent from the foul line. Parrishhasdonea creditable job in his two seasons here, considering the circumstances, and within the next few years could have Guilford among the top challengers in the race for the conference crown. (A. J. Carr) Burwell scores from underneath against Appalachian. BasM After two early season victories-one in a practice game against Wake-Forest and one against the touring Hiram Col- lege team-the outlook for the 1962 baseballers is rather bright, but there is a cloud or two on the horizon. One pre- season weakness is the lack of pitching depth. Aside from junior Mickey Herrin, who piled up a 7-0 record last year, the hurling strength is yet to be proved. The Quakers appear fairly strong at the other positions. Returning letterman are Mickey Faulk at 1st, Lee Johnson at 2nd, Conrad Parker at 3rd, Elwood Parker at short, and Bob Hodges in rightfield. Centerfield is well covered by Carl Hampton, a transfer from P. J. (continued from page 134) freshman Kendell Buckner seems to have taken over the left field slot. Behind the plate is Barry Cook, playing his second year for Guilford after a stint in the Navy. Cook is slated for mound duty, too. The team appears to be strong defensively, and with men like Faulk, Cook, E. Parker, Johnson, Hodges, Buckner, and Hampton, all strong hitters potentially, the offense doesn ' t look weak. This year ' s is a tough schedule, but a Spring Vacation tour through South Carolina is expected to help the team considerably. goff 1962 linksters posing at the Starmount course are, L-R: Carey Reece, Tim McCoy, Brinley McDanel, and Tom Fletcher. With this strong and experienced nucleus and newcomer McCoy, backed up by John Wiley and Charlie Abernethy, the out- look appears bright for the Quakers on the links. On a warm September day in 1958 approximately 150 young men and women entered the gates of Guilford College and became the Class of 1962. There were tall and short people, skinny and fat people, just-right people ; some were scared, some self-conscious and shy, some self-con- fident and friendly, but all with mixed emotions, and all, together, making up the famous class of a century and a quarter. How often during that freshman week did we hear that we were special, that we were hand-picked, that ours was the class that would be remem- bered ? And from hearing things like this didn ' t we become a little more closely-knit than most classes ? Our freshman float won the prize at Home- coming, for the first time the freshman class sponsored a candidate for Homecoming Queen, and she, along with another freshman girl, made the Court, three of our girls became cheerleaders, many of our men played varsity sports, we did this and that, and we were pretty proud of ourselves. Now it ' s 1962, and the century and a quarter class will soon be grad- uated. Soon we will be forgotten, and Guilford College will be talking about the famous class of a century and a half — perhaps some of our children will be in it. When we look at the past four years, what do we see? We see education, certainly, though few of us have bothered to partake of more than a fraction of what has been offered us. When we remember Guilford, I think that education won ' t be what comes to mind. We see Homecoming and May Day week-ends, the burning of a coach in effigy, days at the lake, the change from family-style to cafeteria-style dinners, a 1959 victory in football over arch-rival Elon, serenades to the girls ' dorms, trips to the Azalea Festival, Ham ' s, and, indubitably, the pantry- raid, and on and on. It has been fun, and I think that above all, we will remember Guilford with love. I hope that in some way the 1962 Quaker will help us to •emember. L. H., editor ©?
