North Carolina ?k ut z edication Memories we shall carry with us when we graduate — - memories of our years at Guilford and of the friends we ' ve made. There is one whom we will remember throughout our lives. One who is always around to give us an encouraging word, the extra boost we need at times. One who shows genuine interest in his students, and who by his Christian example guides us towards more useful citizenship. One who understands our problems and keeps his door open at all times for any who want to talk or need advice — a friend to us all. To Dr. Edward F. Burrows we, the seniors, gratefully dedicate this, the 1959 Quaker. ,$IB«Stcta . s. ■ - , - if smasm ir - «i i  -« '  ' ' RememSeving ouv .... . - leisure moments. e magic • ' ' t l ' ' ' - «■■ t4«i -jfiijj m J : Xi k. -f ' ' . dj moonligdi... ide work And lis vew2ivds. With his staff of Stuart Maynard, Robert Shoaf, and Herman Clark he worked the Quakers hard for the ' 58 season, and that work reaped good results. The Quakers g-round out three wins while losing six, and with the breaks coming the way of the Quakers, the record could have easily been reversed. The gridders possessed a squad of 36 players, with a letterman for each position. Veterans started at each position, with the exception of tackle Walter Wiggins and halfback Tom Bowers. With an experienced starting eleven and a good bench the coaching staff looked toward the season with a strong hint of optimism. The Quakers were to roll up three shut- out wins, one of them being a welcome homecoming victory. They upset the experts with one good showing right after another. The Quakers were on the upswing during the season, and that trend continues to hold true. Guilford lost only four seniors off the 1958 grid team. With the remainder of the squad still intact, and with incoming talent the Quakers will continue to climb up the ladder toward the North State higher echelon. The 1958 campaign was a good example of this climbing, and the rate of ascent during the season was good. This word. Optimism , is a catching word . . . and so is winning. It has become contagious around the Guilford campus. Wayne Henley, Tom Price, Carl Opauski, Larry Chesson, and Daryl Allen were the Quaker mainstays . . . following an open date Guilford played host to the Bridgewater Eagles, and the Eagles looked like sparrows before the game was over . . . Sid Teachey got the Quakers off running with a beautiful 65-yard punt return . . . Bill Huber, Bob Smith, and Tom Bowers also scored as Guilford routed the Eagles by a 28-0 margin . , . Henley, Opauski, Allen, and Chesson again were outstanding, along with Jim Stutts . . . then came the big Home- coming affair with the Emory and Henry Wasps, and the (Quakers were picked to lose by two touchdowns . . . but the outcome of the game proved different as Ciuilford won its first Homecoming game since 1054, this time by a 14-0 score ... a Baker to Bob Hollo- way 2(l-yard aerial accounted for the first tally, and a plunge by Lester Parker gave the Quakers the other ... a third TD was nullified . . . Opauski, Allen, and Chesson, who perhaps played his finest game of the season, were outstanding performers on defense . . . another journey to the scenic mountains of North Carolina gave the Quakers a 15-0 win against the Catamounts of Western Carolina . . . Guilford completely dominated action as Meroney scampei ' ed across for both of the Quaker touchdowns, with Bowers and Jack HoUey giving him much of- fensive help . . . Allen, Meroney, and Sam Cutler led the defensive efforts of the Gray and Red ... in the final game of the season, a tilt rescheduled from September 27 to Thanksgiving, East Carolina downed the Quakers by 20-0 . . . although the Quaker offense was stymied by the Pirate defense, the defense of the invading Quakers was something to talk about . . . even though the defense gave up three touchdowns, it still stopped ECC eight times within the 30, and once on the one . . . Henley and Stutts headed up the defense for Guilford . . . and with the playing of the East Carolina game the campaign of 1058 drew to a close. As the season progressed, it was evident that a lack of experience and height would be a deterrent to the Quakers. Before the season was over the Quakers had won but five while losing 17. Coach Shoaf, who did a creditable job with the material at hand, used two freshmen, one senior, and a pair of sophomores in his starting line-up. The key to the team was Ted Tilghman, a sophomore who was an honorable mention on the North State star squad. Tilghman led the team in scoring and rebounding, and is sure to make the league team before he retires from Guilford. Bob Young would have meant a difference to the out- come of the season, but an injured knee at the first of practice held him out the first half of the season, and was not able to go at full speed when he re- turned to action. Buddy Key contributed a lot of experience and ability to the cagers. Jon Burwell and Don Lineberry are a pair of first year men that showed by their performance that they will be rugged individuals before they leave this college. On the bench were sophomores Charlie Clark, Jim Lancaster, and freshmen Conrad Parker, Brooks Hayworth, and Ray Sharpe. One thing can be said about the 1958-59 version of the Quakers — the po- tential is there, and for sure that 5-17 record will be improved on when the next cage season rolls around. Quaker Jon Burwell (11) goes up after a drive for two points against the Panthers of High Point. Quaker Buddy Key (40) is surrounded by a trio of Panthers. Guilford lost the game to the powerful HP quint by a 74-64 margin. The star of the 1958-59 Quakers, Ted Tilghman, hits for two points in the 74-64 loss to the HP Panthers on the Guilford home court. Freshman prospect, Don Lineberry, goes into the air on a jump shot in an attempt to tally two points for the home-standing Quakers. Coming up from behind is Quaker Charlie Clark (15). ' dde 1959 Diamondmen As far as playing for Guilford goes the 1959 version of the diamond squad, excluding the pitching corp, had five rookies — first base, second base, third base, cen- ter and right field. There were only two veteran hurl- ers returning from the ' 58 squad. But, taken overall, this spring ' s baseball team was better than its prede- cessor. There was more power at the plate in the persons of Buddy Key, Tommy Johnson, Brodie Baker, and Jim Stutts. plus such capable stickers as Marcus Allred, Bob Smith, Carey Reece, and Barry Cook. The addition of Jim Childress, Charlie Little, and Dick Bur- rows, along with an occasional stint on the hill by Baker, bolstered the mound staff headed up by Tom O ' Briant and Danny Carr as the season progressed. Those two factors, along with a strengthened bench gave the Quakers a good representation in the base- ball world of 1959 North State action. « r . Graduation hit the track events fairly hard, but the field events held their own as the 19511 campaign got underway. The weight men were led by returnees Doug Kerr and Dudley Cox. Frank Bailey came on to take up the slack left by the ineligibility of Harold James. Tom Bowers led the Quakers in the dashes. Dave Hardin was the mainstay in the mile an two mile runs. And others were on hand to fill in gaps. After an early victory over the thin clads of Pfeiffer the Quakers got into full swing for the remainder of the spring. And before the season was completed the Quakers proved to be a tough team to defeat. For the 1959 campaign in the tennis world coach Shoaf had a young but talented squad, and had a freshman to become the number one man on the six-man team. Jordan Washburn and Long Vu were the only returnees from last year ' s edition. Coming in to take over the slot Wash- burn held last year was freshman Brooks Hay- worth, and three newcomers took over the third, fourth, and sxith positions. However, as the sea- son moved along, the players had a hard time keeping the position they started with at the beginning of the campaign. In early matches the Quakers won easily over the Whirlies from Senior High, lost to a good Quantico Marine team, and swept over High Point. From there on Shoaf ' s racquet men moved to another successful season in the wurld of tennis. THE 1959 QUAKER LINKERS: (left to right)- Bob Byrum. Buck Batchelor came out to fill out the Big Four for the stick swingers, and sometimes throwers, Batchelor began the season playing the top spot on the team, but Brewer, with con- sistently good scores, soon knocked Batchelor off his perch, and gained possession himself. Fol- lowing a win to open the r2-match slate, thq linkers lost three straight before they could again find the right range and go on to have a good season.
