RICH Center SHELTON Center WILSON Halfback The 19 6 football season, if measured on a won and lost basis, was not a successful one. The Quakers were and still will be in the process of rebuilding. In the opener, played on September 29th, the Quakers fought from behind to down a stubborn Bridgewater club 12-7. This proved to be the Quakers lone victory. The remaining games saw the Grey and Red completely outclassed. This was chiefly attributed to by the fact that the squad was very inexperienced. The Quakers will lose three members of this year ' s squad via graduation. They are: Van Cuthrell, Jim Shelton, and Herman Clark. Van held down the quarterback position for four years, while Jim gave the Quakers an added punch at fullback for two years. Herman saw only one year ' s service in the Quaker livery and actually will be back next year. However, he has used up his alloted eligibility. MERONEY Halfback CHESSON Guard ;Sfl(tj7|tt W CLARK Quarterback yi-tii ■ys ball Some outstanding freshmen were developed this year. They are: Morris Jester, Bob Holloway, Frank Kersey, Lester Parker, John Meroney, and Bob Smith. All of these gridders figure to be future stars as well as the backbone of future squads. In the individual departments, John Meroney, Jim Doughtry, Ben Rich, Henry Siler, and Ralph Nelson received honors. John Meroney received the best tackier award, the best blocker award went to Jim Doughtry and Ben Rich was the recipient of the best hustler award. At the close of the season Henry Siler and Ralph Nelson were named as the team co-captains. As [he past they again proved to be the sentimental choice of the is. Unfortunately the Quakers drew mighty Lenoir-Rhyne in the St game and only after a terrific struggle did they finally suc- mb by the score of 70-58. A final tabulation showed the Quakers to have won fo games. A vast improvement over the best record since 1953-5-4. previous season, in fact, th Captain Bob Atlas, senior guard sey, led the squad into the confuren of the starting five saw Bob Hendersc from Atlantic City, New J e tournament. Coach Baker, McNeil, Goforth, Brady, S. Bishop, Crawford, Vance. Baseball The 1957 baseball squad played a total of twenty games during the spring, meeting sixteen conference foes and four non-conference nine ' s. Ray Schir- mer, Charles Benedetto, and Russell Gray. Infielders, Charlie Atkinson, Bill Roddy, John Bell, Billy West, Sonny Cashion, Roddy Deans, and Joe Pegram. The squad enjoyed a five hundred season which was climaxed by a third place finish in the con- ference meet. Under the fine leadership of Coach Appenzeller the thin clads provided the fans with some highly interest- ing action; as attested to by the exciting win over the Wake Forest Freshmen. Some of the outstanding members of the squad were: Bob Rosier, Spider Webb, Sam Getsinger, Bob Henderson, Jim Burgess, Dave Hardin, and Billy Garner. All who took part in the program did a wonderful job and are deserving of much praise. If the ' 57 season is an indication of what can be expected in the future years, then the return of track will have indeed been a successful one. by Jacobson First Row. W. Blackman, H. Beaton, B.
