The Quakers took part in five homecoming games and three rain soaked affairs. In the opener, played on October 1st, the Quakers battled a spirited Randolph-Macoi eleven to a 0-0 tie. This game was played on a rainswept field and had it not been for this factor the Quakers would have emerged the victors: it also set the pattern for the rest of the season for the Quakers were plagued by bad breaks the entire campaign. Coach Maynard fielded an all veteran eleven and stuck with it the entire season. As the campaign progressed it became obvious that lack of reserves were to cost the Quakers heavily. With the exception of the Lenoir Rhyne and .Appalachian games the Quakers wet e able to put up creditable showings, however, lack of depth proved to be their undoing time and time again. Against two strong South Carolina foes, Newberry and Wofford, the Quakers held half-time leads only to have them overcome in the final quarter. The Quakers will lose eight members of this year ' s team via graduation. They are: Co-Captains Bob Cornish and Tom Younts, Bill Gibson, Charlie Strider, Leslie Everett, Bob Alligood, Bill Rogers, and Curt Hege. Their services will be dearly missed next year. Those who remain will long remember their wonderful exploits on the grid.ron. In the individual departments, Bill Gibson, Bob Cornish, Jim Shelton, Charlie Strider, and Van Cuthrell received honors. Jim Shelton and Bill Gibson were the leading ground gainers, while in the air Bob Cornish ' s pass receptions proved to be a constant threat to the opposition. In the trophy department Bill Gibson was voted Best Tackier and Best Hustler, while Bob Cornish captured the Best Blocker award. Bob Cornish was selected on the all- conference team, as well as being selected for honorable mention on the all-stale team. Charlie Strider and Van Cuthrell received honorable mention in the all-conference balloting. by Jacobson 57 LES EVERETTE Tackle CHARLIE STRIDER Guard STARTING Front Row: Everette, Nelson, Stewart, Gibson, Alligood, J. BOB GORDON HENRY SILER Tackle Quarterback SCHMIDT Forward Captain ABERNETHY Forward Basketball at Guilford during the 1955-S6 season enjoyed little success. In fact, it uas one of the most disastrous campaigns in Quaker basketball history. The team compiled a record of one uin and tuenty-tuo losses. In the majority of the gam s Guilford was completely outclassed, as they were routed repeatedly during the season. The early part of the season saw Roger Roan leading the team, however, his valiant efforts proved to be wasted as the Quakers went right on losing. His leadership of the team was outstanding until he left the club at the end of the first semester. With the advent of the second semester the fortunes of the team improved some- what and at times provided the fans with exciting basketball. The improvement was chiefly due to the return of Don Hemrick, Os Schmidt, and Bill Abernalhy to the team. This trio led the team during the remainder of the campaign, however their efforts proved to be no match to the opposition. Others who saw considerable service during the season were Jim Burgess, Bob Atlas, Rodney Edwards, Tommy Dillon and Bob Gordon. The 1955-56 campaign marked the end of Coach Meredith ' s reign as the coach. His resignation became effective after the last game, and it is with deep regret that we lose such a fine man. Coach Baker also made his farewell as coach as he guided the J V. ' s to a fairly successful season. He too will be missed, however, advanced study has sidetracked the coaching field at the present lime. This also marked the year that the Quakers did not take part in a post-season tourney, truly it was a disastrous year. Summing up — A fond farewell to the two coaches and hopes for a brighter year to come. ATLAS Guard by Jacobson - N F0V Z i A First Row: Tudor, Hemrick, Atlas, Dillon, Brightenburger, Barnette. All the members of the club have earned a varsity letter from the Men ' s Athletic Association in one of the major sports at Guilford, including football, basketball, baseball, golf and tennis. This year tie have some forty members, all of whom have worked hard to keep the Monogram Club one of the outstanding organizations on campus. The Monogram Club, under the direction of its capable officers: Jake McKeown, President: G. F. Seymore, Vice-President: Tom Younts, Trftsurer and Bill Gibson, Secretary, have sponsored numerous social functions this year. The highlight was the Christmas Dance ivhich was one of the most successful dances ever put on by the Monogram Club. The decorations were splendid, thanks to Chester Baker and many long hours of hard work by the members. We will long remember dancing away the hours to the music of Harold Gale and his Orchestra, and the crowning of Miss Linda Jones, from Bellrose, L. I., as the Monogram Club ' s annual Christmas Queen. She was escorted by Van Cuthrell. This spring the club will sponsor three more social functions, the annual Student-faculty Game, a Variety Show and the KKK (Klub Kampus Kuties) tvhich will be resumed this year as an annual affair after a brief absence from the club ' s social calendar. We will be losing a lot of key seniors this year that will be greatly missed next year. Among the seniors graduating are Bill Atkins, Chester Baker, Ed Brown, Ted Brown, Marvin Carruthers, Bob Cornish, Ducky Everette, Bill Gibson, Curt Hege, Dermont Jarrett, jerry McCumby, Keith Roberts, Bill Rogers, Os Schmidt, Eli Self, Charlie Strider, Chick Trafford, Tom Younts. But on the other hand we have some new members who show great promise and with the help of the new members we can continue to keep the monogram Club high in the respect of the student body. 67 Hen ' s flttiletic Association Left to Right: Coach Dave Meredith. The board had the general oversight of student activities; its main job was to conduct the campus uide elections that occured in March. The budget for the com- ing year was also under the supervision of the hoard; their 1956-57 allocations to organiza- tions being the largest in school history. The board was made up of four class presidents, leading officers of the various organiza- tions, and a few select faculty members. The Campus Chest Drive held in the fall was a fine example of what the board could accomplish. Under their able leadership the goal was met and even surpassed. The keen interest shown by all members on the board, this past year, was in no small way responsible for their very successful year. With president Bill Gibson leading the way all the members pitched in to make it one of the best years in the board ' s history. 73 Seated: Burton, Redmon, Dean Kent, Chas. The Guilford College Choir, recognized as one of the leading choral organi- zations in the southern region, is now in its twenty-eighth season. Varied as the rich music in the diversified repertoire, so is the membership of this group, rep- resenting a dozen religious denominations with singers from a number of states and foreign countries. Although sponsored by the Department of Music, membership is open to all students of the college. Each student has frequent auditions with the director on his part in each number. The scholastic standard, set by the college for all groups and teams, must be maintained by choir mem- bers for public appearance. It is the purpose of the choir to study and perform the best church music from all periods of choral development. With this aim, the music is chosen with care so that representative members, both from the early masters and contem- porary writers, can be presented. Texts are also considered carefully, many taken from the scriptures. Although many concerts are given locally and within the state, the choir makes an extended tour each year during the spring vacation period. Since its organization in 1 929, the choral group has traveled over most of the stales east of the Mississippi. 89 student Ctiristian llssociation First Row: Carolyn Pipkin, Anne Rae Thomas, Janet Bannerman, Agnes Stem, Clara Atkinson.
