Foreword of PSLp From childhood our going in and out of various doors has been a routine part of life. But in all probability, there shall be few doors so influential- so molding on our very beings, as these we have passed through at college. These doors have been many . . . for while the primary purpose of college is obtaining that prized degree, there are many more doors than those of the classroom. The gym doors — the dormitory doors — the oft ' opened doors of the Soda Shop — all ha ' e been a part of us and our life here at Guilford. It is through these portals that we take you, with the hope that this book shall be in years to come a key to unlock for you the good, the wonderful memories of 1954-1955. Blissfully unaware of all tlic trouhlcs and trials awaiting us in our college careers and thinking onlv of the happiness we expected, we entered Guilford College in September, 1952. Bill Gibson led us through a very successful fust year— a year in which a number of individual personalities became distinctive. Among these were Emily Warrick, who reigned as Homecoming Queen, and Peggy Wells, Queen of the Christmas Dance. On the football field, Bill Rogers won the awards for best blocker and best tackier. Charlie Strider as president of the Sophomore Class proved such a capable leader that we re-elected him lor the following year. The Sophomore year was high- lighted by the annual Freshmen-Sophomore picnic at the college lake. On entering oui third year, we became members of the elite, uppercla.ssmen onlv to find that our troubles were not over. Religion and history proved as dificult as well as interesting. We also found oin-.sclves faced with the difficult but satisfying problem of planning a sueci-.ssful Junior-Senior Banquet. With one more door to be opened, we look forward with great anticipation to our last challenging vcar. 29 Mh Juniors itiiii 7 3 Kcn hcl Adams (iuilford C ' ollcsc I, nn Apctz NVw Vcirk, X, V. At regular meetings on Sunday nights vvc have enjoyed a number of very fine programs and worship services. One of our most interesting programs was Mrs. Milner ' s lecture on Marriage and the Family sponsored by the Personal Life Commission whose chairman is John Church. This topic al va s seems to interest college students! The S.C .A. has had the responsibility of sexcral student chapel programs during the year. They were very successful and a vote of thanks goes to Bill Gibson, Rcva Watson and Lucille Herrin for being leaders in this capacit) ' . Other projects of the year were the Campus C hristmas Reception and a Claroling Party. Re ligious Emphasis Week is always a big project of the S.C.A., and this year was under the able leadership of Janice Corneilson. Our biggest project of the year was to send someone from Guilford to the National Quad- rennial Conference of the Y.W. ' s and ' .M. ' s all o er the nation. With the hel]) f the Student Affairs Board we were able to linance two delegates to this worthwhile and important conference. Ann Rae Thomas and Lucille Herrin very ably repre- sented our college and will he able to share their experiences with us in the tuture. This t ]je of thing is what helps the .Student Christian .As- sociation grow. The Quakers plaxecl much better ball than their record indicates, but considering the shortage of man power as compared to the other schools, the season was by no means a total loss. The outstanding feature of this year ' s Quaker ele en was the iron clad defense which made our opponents fight for e ery yard.
