k s sesf s Guilford college KEsV-iSl LIBRARY ACCESSION Z 1 - l 4, V,34 ,o,Z, ?v. ir ' . - _ Past Is A ? - — - mm- b t, Howard U y z r. We dedicate the 1954 Quaker to a teacher who is more than just that — he is a man with a warm humanness who happens to be a friend of ours — a sincere man who dreams for us, who can laugh with us and give us a lift when we need it; whose underlying patience and belief in us prods us on to whatever greater things we may hope to attain — a man whose earnest idealism is something we would often like to deny — but cannot — and then, sooner or later, we, your stu- dents, Edward Burrows, inevitably realize this — awed by its stern invincibleness we learn one day to be grateful. And so thanks — for everything. E!S We, the staff of the 1 954 Quaker, bring you a new type of annual with a theme based on the proud past, the glorious present, and the inspiring future. We have had a wonderful time in giving you the 1954 Quaker; but also some difficulties and long hours of work — and yes, even a few tears — but now our work is completed and we give the 1954 Quaker to you, the students. It is our hope that you will be as proud of your annual and college as we are. • K H • % 4 yy ' ♦ ! k+ + z i • . They started the season off with a smashing victory over the Mountaineers of Appalachian and then came to Hobbs field to whip Hampton-Sidney. The Quakers continued to play good ball but injuries hurt them badly as they lost five straight. Then came the annual Thanksgiving tilt with Elon and the Maroon and Gray came through to win for the third straight year. Carl Jones and Bill Rogers won All- Conference honors and Charlie Strider re- ceived an honorable mention. CHARLES BRANSON VICKORY Vic Pleasant Garden History Let what comes, come; it ' s coming, anyivay. WE WILL NEVER FORGET GUILFORD The class of ' 54 — these four years have raced by quickly and we look back at the events and changes in awesome wonder. We came to Guilford as the greenest of the green — even to the nth degree. At our first class meeting we chose our officers for the year with John Lomax as president; Dick Brown, vice-president; Marvin Owens, secretary; and Max Ballinger, treasurer. As always, the sophomores immediately took us under their loving wing — we learned all about rat court, and we even enjoyed some of(?) the pranks forced upon us. As the weeks passed, we became initiated into the core curriculum and seriously began in our course of knowledge. The climax of our Freshman year came with the Freshman-Sophomoic picnic where we solemnly signed the peace treaty with those beloved Sophomores. In September ' 51, we returned to Guilford to find that several of our class had found interests elsewhere. We settled to routine of studies but our main concern was to see that the Freshmen were duly initiated into the art of college life. Our second year was characterized by the numerous class meetings held by the lake and conducted by our class officers — Marvin Owens, presi- dent; Bill Marshburn, vice-president; Betty Martin, secretary; Barbara Anson, treasurer. Spring came and we buried the hatchet and ex- tended the hand of fellowship to the Freshmen at the annual Freshman-Sophomore picnic. Our Junior year came and with it came Junior ways. A year which was most pleasant of all for then we had the honor of being an upperclassman without the re- sponsibility of being a Senior. At the head of our class we placed as our president, Leslie Warrick; secretary, Anne Newton; treasurer, Bobbye James. During the spring of our junior year we assumed the responsibility of feeding the Seniors for one evening — the banquet, held at the gym, was a successful event with the splendor of a Japanese garden theme. When the bell tolled in September of ' 53, we assumed the coveted title of dignified seniors. Our class officers in this eventful year were Jim Lomax, president; Charlie Au stin, vice-president; Betty Martin, secretary; Allene Owens, treasurer. Now as our last days at college draw nigh and it comes time for us to don caps and gowns and receive diplomas, we realize that we can never repay our Alma Mater for what she has given us. Looking back, we will always remember the fun we had — the excitement of games, dances, senior week, and finally graduation — along with the hardships of those sixty page theses and Philosophy 41-42. We know it was wonderful and we will never forget Guilford. Chalkey, President; Ferrell, Secretary; Gravitt, Treasurer; Church, Vice-President. Fred Albright, Greensboro, N.
