HUH I! ,■ ■ Autumn . . . dancing leaves of red and brown and yellow . . . evening skies in flaming; sunsets . . . cool breezy nights . . . that Carolina moon . . . once as;ain it ' s September, and Guilford springs to life. . . . September 13 . . . campus leaders on the Student Affairs Board meet at the lake for a picnic given l v Dr. Milner . . . the warm greetings and comfortable familiarity of old friends . . . loads of food . . . and fun . . . still hard to believe that this was actually our lake . . . the next day, lots ol new faces in the dorms . . . lost . . . curious . . . expectant . . . by the fifteenth all the Freshmen had arrived . . . there were lots of them . . . the dorms were filled up . . . some already old friends with each other . . . and with upperclassmen . . . thanks to the Fall Planning Conference . . . and the Freshmen Camp sponsored by the Student Christian Association . . . about sixty students .it Camp Nawakwa . . . Freshmen Week . . . the tiring process of registration . . . the placement tests that followed . . . lectures . . . presentation of campus organizations by the Student Affairs Board . . . the tour of the campus . . . and amid all the hectic rush, new friendships being made . . . room-mates getting acquainted. . . . by the time the old students had returned, the Frosh were

Autumn Crown ' d with the sickle and the wheaten sheaf, While AUTUMN, nodding o ' er the yellow plain, Comes jovial on; the Doric reed once more. Well pleased, I tune. Whate ' er the wintry frost Nitrous prepared; the various blossom ' d Spring Put in white promise forth; and summer suns Concocted strong, rush boundless now to view, Full, perfect all, and swell my glorious theme. beginning to feel a part of Guilford . . . the joyous hails of upperclassmen running into old pals again . . . the talk of the last engagements ... or the missing few who were not to return . . . then upperclassmen registration on the eighteenth . . . the usual rush for freshmen skirls by the males of the campus . . . the beginning of classes . . . and the Freshmen Reception sponsored by the Social Committee . . . old students herding the new- through an endless receiving line . . . the com- forting feeling of big sisters close by . . . football practice at Hobbs field . . . September 20 . . . the season ' s opener at Winston-Salem . . . hard fought contest . . . but Appalachian edged the Quakers by one point . . . Shugart, senior guard, Hege, freshman back, and Beck, freshman guard, played a good game . . . October 4 . . . Homecoming Day . . . game at Hobbs field . . . flocks of alumni . . . pre-game parade of dorm floats . . . Archdale winning the trophy for the best float . . . Emily Warrick of Goldsboro, sponsored by the cheer- leaders, made a lovely Homecoming Queen . . . spirit raised by our pep band and Thomasville ' s band . . .Jones, Shugart, Shoaf, and Yates played a great game . . . but Guilford bowed to Newberry 12-6 . . . disappointed, Guilfordians determined to make this a day of days . . . and they did . . . with the campus barbecue . . . the Homecoming Dance down at the gym, sponsored by the Women ' s Athletic Association . . .
