Wf THE QUAKER NINETEEN HUNDRED FIFTY-THREE Published by the Student Body of Guilford College Guilford College, North Carolina Miss Mildred Marlette For you r exceptional and unceasing devotion to the women students of Guilford College; for your patient and understanding guidance; for your own special sense of humor and your kindh assistance as teacher, clean, and friend, we dedicate the 1953 Quaker to vou, Miss Miidred Marlette. Foreword If we could but keep the sweet and vibrant memories of our college years alive and glowing in our minds forever, then perhaps a book such as this would not be necessary. But our minds need a little help— an aid to remember. This book, the 1953 Quaker, attempts to serve as a guide to the happy, rich and radiant hours we spent as students at Guilford. Years from now, as you leaf over the old and worn pages, your face may crinkle in a smile or maybe your eves will grow mists ' . Good luck to each one of you — may your memories be easy and beautiful to remember. Autumn Crown ' d with the sickle and the wheaten sheaf, While AUTUMN, nodding o ' er the yellow plain, Comes jovial on; the Doric reed once more. Well pleased, I tune. Whate ' er the wintry frost Nitrous prepared; the various blossom ' d Spring Put in white promise forth; and summer suns Concocted strong, rush boundless now to view, Full, perfect all, and swell my glorious theme. If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more, we shall speak again together and you shall sing to me a deeper song. The Prophet
