Dr. Nereus Mendenhall had decided to emigrate to the West to take his family from the atmosphere of war and slavery. The trunks and boxes v ere packed and sent to Jamestown. Dr. Mendenhall and his fam- ily were to follow the next day. However, that morn- ing he appeared in the schoolroom and said that it was the Lord ' s will that he stay and bear with New Garden in her crisis.
