Kevin Mullaney, Laurel Beverly. Darin Price For the members of the Senior Class, this is our final year at Guiderland High School, Next year will be the beginning of the rest of our lives, We will encounter new frontiers, whether it be college or work or whatever lies ahead for us. But whatever happens to us, we will never forget the four years at Guilderland High School. The summer before our freshman year we all experienced the anxiety and excitement of starting high school. Our fears ranged from, What are the teachers going to be like? to Are the Seniors going to pick on me? to What are the SAT's? As the months and years went on we found out that the teachers didn't bite, the Senior abuse wasn't so bad, and the SAT's were just a test! The most important part of high school was not the score of a standardized test or our grade point average, but the friendships we made along the way, The memories of the times we spent with our friends will last much longer than any report card, For most of us, the experience of true friendships and relationships blossomed the most while in high school. The guy that you were just acquainted with in middle school became your best friend. The certain someone you only saw in the hall freshman year became your date to Homecoming. You soon found that the same person you sat next to in homeroom was taking you to football games and your lab partner had the lead in the musical. We all were exposed to people with different values and different backgrounds and this allowed us to grow and mature into the people we are today. We will reflect on these experiences and lessons throughout our lifetime and no lesson plan could have been taught so well!! This year we will graduate and move on to bigger and better things. Yet the time we spent in high school can not be replaced by anything. lt will be cherished as our lives change and as we change from teenagers to adults. We will meet new people and make new friends, but, we will never be able to relive the parties or proms or the people we spent them with. That is what has made our high school years so special! - Michelle R. We envision ourselves with an en- joy able and stable career. a nice house, and a great-looking car. Visions of College sometimes haunt those of us who are seniors. Final exams terrorize us all. We all have dreams. Seniors dream of graduation and diligently count down the days. The rest of us look forward lo moving up a grade. and having one less year to go. We dream of future success and popularity as well as stability. Dreams and visions play a major part in our lives. Visions of success drive us forward to take hold of our dreams and follow them, whether we're headed for a Master's Degree and pro- fession or a quiet house in the country. May we all dream and find success. When we look back at our days at Guilderland, let us remember those visions with happy smiles and fondness in our hearts. - by Jen jackson 1.-A 'v- m LEE 1 ?QQ, . However, classy timepieces are not the only new items on the fashion scene. Tie-dyes, along with the entire sixty-look, have come back with abundance. Army jackets with peace signs and Grateful Dead par- aphernalia have become, frequent sights of Guilderland. Accessories have also become big this year. Hats, berets, scarves, and jewelry are appearing more than ever before. Dark colors have replaced the pastels and fluorescents of previous years, and, black in particular, has become popular creating what can be best described as the artistic look. This eccentric form of dressing has always existed at Guilderland, but the artistic look has spread this year to a larger part of the student body. And, of course, there is the ever-popular denim, back in its new acid- washed form. Acid-washed denim jackets, jeans, and mini-skirts have be- come prevalent throughout Guilderland, Oversized sweaters and sweatshirts remain as popular articles of clothing, as they have been in previous years. White canvas sneakers have pretty much replaced Reebok, although sneak- ers in general are not as popular as they used-to ber Loafers, Docksiders, and high-laced boots now seem to be dominant in footwear!-l il', A V ' Last, but not least, is the, -Preppy' look, V has and will be in style. What about wearing beach-clothes in the middle of November, or a certain kind of shirt on a certain day? Going to the basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, and other games, is that what they mean by school spirit? Does it include cheering until your voice is gone, and screaming wildly when a game is won? The answer is all ot' the above, plus so much more. School spirit is supporting your school no matter what. lt's actively participating in school activities, and having a blast doing it. Anybody can have school spirit, You don't have to dress crazy, or scream your lungs out. School spirit is just firm and lasting support of what your school does, and more importantly what the people of the school do. Each student needs to gain confidence in their ability to do mathematics. Sometimes, for some of us, that requires a great deal of perseverance. Mathematics is not a spectator sport -it requires active participation. Students should begin to un- derstand how mathematics contributes to their reasoning and problem solving ability - how different strategies can be used for solving prob- lems - to recognize that there is more than one way to solve a problem. We encourage com- petition by stressing participation in the New York Mathematics League contest and in the American High School Mathematics Examination. This year we are teaching, for the first time, an honors course in Course 3 and a Computer Programming course l3l which uses the Pascal programming language. We are getting ready to offer Advanced Placement Computer Science as well as a more intense Advanced Placement Calculus course within the next few years. 69 'F' l i Cl Developing stronger readers, writers, speakers, listeners, and thinkers are the major ongoing goals of the English Department. Indeed, the devels opment of these goals is central to all subjects and necessary to being informed citizens. ln addition to encouraging students to excel in these areas in the classroom, the department en- courages students to go public with their tal' ents, Entering writing contests, publishing in the classroom, submitting pieces to The Troubador and writing for The Journal are some ot the ways students can show off their writing, This is the fourth year that our students have participated in the Shakespearean Recitation Contest, And for the second year, the department sponsored a Writers ol the Month Program which asked faculty from all disciplines to submit student writing that was the best response to any given assignment. We also think our students are so good that we nominate seine for national recognition for the NCTF Achieveinent Award in Writing. Senior, Mark Daly, was one of some H00 students na- tionwide to receive this award. Denmark is in the very south of Skandinavia, which is the north of West Europe. In most aspects it is much like Albany, there it is only a little warmer in the winter and a little colder in the summer. I came here to learn about another culture and to learn to speak English tof which I already had 9 years in school in Denmarkl. I think Guilderland High has given me both. The cul- tural part simply by treating me like an Amer- ican on both the soccer and the swimming teams. I met a lot of nice guys, Also, all of the people I have met in my classes. The language came automatically since my Danish didn't really help me here. I want to thank all of my friends and the teachers who have helped to make this a year l will never forget. Thanks, Steffen Hi! My name is Riikka Wesamaa and Im a rotary exchange student from Finland the little country of the lakes in Northern Europe where it is really not so cold as you think. If you ever wondered who was making it, you might be interester' t snow that it was the Guilderland Central High School Orchestra better known as . ,f orchestra, and for good reason. Thirty violins, seven violas, nine cellos, four bases. tour flutes, an oboe, two clarinets, two bassoons, three trumpets, a French horn. two saxophones, three trombones, two tubas, and three percussion, all with players attached, certainly fill up space. A smaller group of eight violins, four violas, tour cellos, and two basses, all included in the full orchestra, make up the chamber ensemble, which traditionally plays at senior awards night, as well as a winter and spring concert, and the district festival in May which the full orchestra also plays in, under the conducting of Phyllis Lyngard. Both organizations play all types of music, ranging from Baroque to contemporary and everything in between. lt could be a classic concerto, or a significant symphony, or some precocious composers arrangement of a popular piece. But whatever it is, you don't need to wonder anymore about who's rehearsing in east sixteen. - by Stephanie Pieck Conductor: Phyllis J. This year, featured sololsts have included Mike Flazano, trumpetg Julle Cummings, tenor sax, Kevin Barcomb, Alto sax and Lonny Fiber, trombone. P.A., is designed to give its members an opportunity to in- crease their confidence in them- selves and each other. Activities often involve group effort and co- operation. But more than that, it's fun, that is if you enjoy climbing walls, jumping off ceiling rafters, and repeatedly boggling your mind with seemingly unsolvable puzzles. Altogether, P.A. has formed some rather strong friendships, and we're sure Coach Rorick deserves a big hand for bringing us together and putting up with us. The varsity boys soccer team, fielding its young- est squad in years, managed to do well this year, despite preseason predictions stating otherwise. Most experts felt that the team would not be a typical Gullderland team this year, a team that would be very difficult to beat. Well, they were? wrong. As usual, the team was a typical Don Snyder club. They were tough, aggressive, scrappy, and they worked very, very hard. As many cited, the Individual skill was not abundant, but that typical Gullderland soccer success was. After placing sec-3 ond ln the Gold Division race behind Burnt Hills, thug Dutchmen upset the Spartans in the semifinals of? the sectlonals and then went on to be defeated In thc? finals by a tough Shenendehowa team, 2-0. The final team record was 13-6, despite the preseason pre- dictions. Several Gullderland players were selected for the All-Suburban Council team. Sophomore' Jaime Deluca and junlor Empire State Games mem-V ber Blll Usher, who also led the team in goals scored, were selected to first team, while juniors Terry Reilly and Craig Levernois, also Empire State Games members, were selected to the second ands third teams, respectively. Levernols also led thlli team in assists with 14. Coach Alex Sokarls' flrst year at the helm of the Gullderland football program, after coming from a suc- cessful tenure at Albany High School, proved to be less than pleas- ing. Joyner, a junior runnlngback, was also named to the thlrd team All- Suburban Council. Despite the un- successful wln-loss record, Sokarll states that this was a bulldlng year. Tl e varsity football cheerleaders, although cheering for a team that only won one game managed to keep the crowd going at all the games. With nine seniors, five junio s, and one sophomore, the varsity squad was able to boost school spirit and keep the team morale high throughout the long 1987 football season, Senior aaptains Kim Taylor and Nicole Mahoney, under the fine direction of head coach Patti ?almer, led the squad through perfectly synchronized sidelines and dazzling halt-1 me routines. This year's team had an opportunity to compete in a tall cheerleading competition, but the event was cancelled .4 av, ..-:us-espn, .. . due to technicalities. The team's only loss was to Shenendehowa, who, also 14- 1, shared the top spot in the Suburban Council with Guilderland. First year volley- ball coach Randy Jerrald took the reigns of the varsity this year and managed to do a fine job. Junior standouts Rob Boyce and Darin Miller, both Empire State Games members led the team to the first place spot. With its new placement in the fall season, the varsity volleyballers lost several key players to other fall sports who might have helped tremendously this season, The varsity team also lost their best, and only, setter, Meredith Adams, early in the season. Senior Kate Day filled that spot and did a fine relief job, although she had never set before. Despite these hand- icaps, this year's squad managed to post a 6-6 league record. This was a minor drop from last year's 6-4 record. Under the direction of veteran coach Mary Yager, senior captains Gina Dornburg and Joelle Kunkel helped the volleyballers maximize their potential despite the missing links. The varsity girls finished in fourth place in the Gold Divlslun and their biggest upset of the year was beating Bethlehem in their second meeting. Dornburg, one of the two veterans on the team, was named to the First Team All'Suburban Council. l rv Q I I -u--1- I I F 'tv DLLF Q1 YM Row number 1: fbottoml Traci Delaney, Coach Linda Gray, Shannon Garrlty. The varsity boys, with strengths in all areas of the sport, were ex- pected to continue improving their reputation as a Section ll power. Arnel Joyner, Section ll triple jump champion and Empire State Games member, led the team in the field, along with the brother combo of Steve and Bill Usher ln the high and triple jump, respectively. Jaggn Morton, Sectional runner-up ln '87, continued to make a name for himself as a fine area hurdler. Freshman sensation Josh Zitomer gpg. clalized in the 400 meter run and the pole vault, and provided depth in many other need. ed areas. Sophomore Jim Richmond continued to excel In the steeplechase, after placing gg. ond in that event In the 1987 Sectionals. Junior cross country sensation Dieter Drake and gg. nlor Rob Stealey provided the points In the distance events, while senior Mike Slattery And junior Tim McCarthy teamed up to give strength to the 800 meter run and the 411800 relay. All three relay teams, 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 established themselves as Suburban Council standouts. After a disappointing 4-5 1987 season, the varsity girls track team was looking for a more competitive showing in the spring of 1988. With a lack of numbers, it is hard to be competitive in a sport such as track, How- ever, the varsity girls made the best with what they had. Section ll standout Sara Haviland, who is ranked highly in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, looked to have a fine season to culminate her senior year. Fellow senior Kir- stin Ross, coming off a superb Cross Country season, looked to excel in the 800, 1500, and 3000 meter runs, Juniors Dee Buckoff and Lori Buckiewicz provided much needed strength in the middle distance races. Ross was expected to, basically, fill in for last year's sensation Chrissy Smith, who was lost to grad- uation. The girls 474800 relay team comprised of Ross, Buckoff, Buckiewicz and eighth grad- er Jen Levin did well in most Surburban Coun- cil contests. by Tim McCarthy 25 Row number 1: fkneelingl Neil Voupell, Adam Ellenbogen, George Zounes, Greg Smith, Frank Cacckello, Dave Orsini.
