People tend to remember things that are either pleasurable or painful. Things that are ur- bane are normally boring and forgetful. The school year here is never forgetful. When tecollecting about high school one probably first remembers their friends. We are always making them or losing them. Then you might remember boyfriends of girlfriends that you had. Next might be the fun, or disappointment you had participating in a sport or activi- ty. Last but not least you'll remember your teachers. Things that are remembered don't just happen. People make them happen. If you want to make a year to remember, do things that will make people remember you. w 6, 2 In . R, K f ,lm 53 . T -vt F .J i 4, ' m..,....a... Then you might hear yoursell caving, Remember the ugh' carpet that used to be in the east builing?, or, Remember lunch before the stereo? . Then you might start realizing all the little things that xou didn't see before vlunior ,ll1llt'k:l'.l?l.ll'1U said one olirhe lirst things she noticed was that, the drab green XVest Building was now a glowing ofliwhitef' junior Gina Dornburg added, The new color gives the West Building a certain warmth. Some ot' the svsrems that helped run the school were changed or improved upon this year. The lunch lines were all changed around, says senior ,lot Schaetbr then added, I like them the way they .ire now, ir's easier to get a lunch. Another comment about the lunchroom came from senior Make YanGux'sling, The food prices were outrageously high this year compared to last year. Senior Beth Saltsiuan says, l didn t know we had a blind student until I saw the Blind Student Crossing sign. There are so many new signs around, added Schaefer, lililce the ones in the parking lots. Senior vlasoo Ellenbogen commented on the schools parking permit policy, l refuse to get a parking permit, l think it's a waste olitime, l uenr in to get one but the whole process was too slow l think the new gi m rules are ridiculous, says Senior -len VanDeXVal, referring to the policy of no jewelry, or watches, This new policy was brought about with the neu grading system, based on points lor participation, enthusiasm, skill level, and attendance. The library had a View new renovations this year. one of which was the replacement of five tables with sixteen study carols. Saltsman com- mented on other changes They tthe librariansl finally realized thar people could hide behind the bookcases and moves them so they could see between them Sports as another thing that is hard to forget about The tall sports reams dominated the Suburban Council. Boys' Varsity Soccer again won the Gold Du .sion and Section Two titles Girls' Swimming did exceptionally well. Vikki Indilicato and Kim Ferris went to the secrionals and won .b doulo-les tor the girls tennis team Cross country did outstanding, records were broken all season. Sports is a large part ofthe activities tha' happen here .it the high school, with 46 sporting activities it would seem that there is a sport for just about everybody. v- iff? ii Q 3 lit il- 5 RIE DS H h h l 1 h l not ru NN xx 1x 1 xe1r ro remember Wfhen one rhxnlxs ol l987 first to come to mlm rs If ar :he m r memomble llff t hx h Lhool They 1re people you hugh xv1th ery xxrrh people you grow 1nd U r J fl h h hool 1re umerhxrxg ro be rhemhed 1lxx.1y5 Your lrxends have always been there for you and you JXC ECU YC C'l'l7 mel h px 1nd 'nerm rue 1re umerhm rh1r nex er can be ehmged Wfhen you look back to the year of l987 everybody H me pe11 l VN 1 1 xe1r ro remember beeauxe rr xx lb the best of umes 123 kv- WP DUT,V:.,,f.1' . pf C , rf IA. . Indeed, the development of these goals are central to all subjects and necessary to being informed citizens. In addition to encouraging students to excel in these areas in the classroom, the department encourages students to go public with their talents. joining writing contests, publishing in the classroom, submitting pieces to The Troubador and Voice and Virian and writing for The joumal are some of the ways students can show off their creative writing. The Guilderland Players allows students with theatrical talents a vehicle for expression. This is also the third year that our students have participated in the Shakespearean Recitation Contest. And for the first time, the department sponsored a Writers of the Month Program which asked faculty from all disciplines to submit student writing that was the best response to any given assignment. We also think our students are so good that we nominate some for national recognition for the NCTE Achievement Award in Writing. We are proud of our students and their achievements and continue to strive to provide meaningful and challenging ex- periences in the EnglishfLanguage Arts. an l Ellen Carruthers Englub Richard Cascmi Sar1alStud1eJ Frank Cicero Foreign Language Christopher Claus Reading Mary Lou Claus 5pecralEducat1on Susan Cohen Matbematrr: Nicholas Colamarino Health Jerri C00k Engllrb Wendy Coon Forergn Language james Corigliano Mum' Paul Cullen Social Studxer Linda Devenpeck Snenre Giuseppe Duca Foreign Language Thomas Farrelly Matbernattrr Wdliam Drake Foreign Language Faculty 59 x . if l . 4 in . . We have implemented a unit on Latin America in grade 9 this year. We are preparing to send teachers to Syracuse University this summer to be trained in a SUPA college level course entitled Publir Policy which we will imple- ment in the spring of'1988. Grade 1 1 teachers are in the process of text selection and making plans to imple- ment the new grade 1 1 curriculum next September 1987, which will be a review of U.S. Government and then a chronological approach ofthe American History from 1865 to the present. This wiU replace the five unit American Studies course that we have been teaching since 1968. Marketing, Business Ownership and Marketing, Law, and Accelerated Accounting are extremely popular. With increased need for keyboar- ding skills and computer use, Keyboarding is opted by many students. XVord Processing provides a number of students with personal-use skills lterm paper preparation, club correspondence, etc.J, as well as employment skills. The Department has been responsive to community needs and has been ahead of the Regents Action Plan recommendations and man- dates. Few courses will need to change little more than the name. One major change occurred 1 Speedwriting has replaced Gregg Shor- thand Qdemand for which has declinedh and is available to students wishing note taking andfor employment skills. Business Dynamics is becoming Introduction to Occupations, required of all Occupational Education students and offered as an elective to others. Business Analysis! Business Computer Applications will be a required course of students opting for the five-unit sequence in Business Education. Students, of course, are encouraged to learn and earn through Work Experience. Office Procedures continues to be THE course for budding secretaries or administrative assistants, providing Open House in May each year to enable the community to find out about Business Pro- grams offered. There are no surprises in Business Education --- we mean Business! Faculty 63 bs AD N ISTRATIO fi: lik, 1' PRINCIPAIQS MESSAGE Too often, like Gatsby, we tend to spend so much of our lives in between time , a foot in the past, a glance to the future. Others will say, sometimes cynically, that there are really only two good places - where we have been and where we are going. I would like to think that your years at Guilderland Central High School provided a striking four-year moment where, in a sense, time stood still, clocks froze, past and future blended somehow, but only to heighten the bittersweet things one lives through at :bat time, in lhat place. If we, the faculty, and you our graduates, have touched each other, even slightly, with a little sentiment and a bit of intellect and a lot of wisdom, then our lives are enriched by just having known one another. As you leave high school, try to remember the feeling of friendship, Take the future and let it be yours, make the world and your place in it what they ought to be, Fondly and with best wishes always, Debbie N. About this time every year, in the dead ofwinter, I dig in- to my mind and try to find those memories of summer. Ir's hard to imagine summer even existed when I look out at the two feet of snow on the ground. I do love to go toboggfining, ice skating, and for walks in the snow - but it gets to the point where I'm sick of the white stuff and I need to see alittle green. The trees now stand naked, and the grass is buried under rwo feet of snow. I don't know if I can hold out till spring! Probably one ofthe worst things about winter is its length. It seems twice as long as all the other seasons. We still have about eight imore weeks to look forward to of shoveling snow, changing classes in sub-zero temperatures, and having to put on sixteen layers of clothing before stepping outside. Of course, winter sports lovers will argue that it's eight more wonderful weeks of ice hockey, skiing, and ice skating. Forget the snow and ice, I'm looking forward to field hockey, water skiing, and rollerskating down the sidewalk. 88 Winter LKQ ry L 5 ND CENTRAL 'HGH GUILDERLA fem' Wi, Vi QR X 58- bl-. We began the Book Ex- cliange program for students and teachers, sponsored H.U.G. In December, the Tawasentha Chapter admitted twenty-six new members at an induction ceremony held at the high school. lt was at busy year of service for members of National Honor Society. HonotSocizvy IZ7 FRIE DS FROM AFAR Participation in the Rotary youth exchange program can be an experience that will color the rest of your life. lt can also be hard, but a tremendous experience in understanding and learning all phases of a new culture. Change does not mean that one forgets your natural family, but rather that you expand yourself personally through a new family and friends. It is an opportunity, not a deprivation. GCI-IS has been a participant in Rotary exchange programs sponsored by the Colonie- Guilderland chapters for over 15 years. Each year the program accepts three students from such far away continents as Europe, Asia or South America, who reciprocate and in return ac- cept three American students.
