The air is fresh and crisp, the birds are flying south and children are romping around in a beautiful pile of leaves. But fall is much more than a change of season. It is a change in attitude and feelings about oneself. lt is an end. lt is a beginning. For most people, fall brings conflict- ing feelings. lt is the end of the carefree times of summer and the beginning of the kaleidoscope of new experiences. Fall is a return to the routine and regularity of school. But it also holds an enticing my- stery of the unknown. Who knows what is in store in the upcoming year? There will be bad times, but there will be many good times, too. Face the future and make it a friend. Fall brings with it the excitement of new ideas, new opportunities. new goals. lt is the time to do things one never thought of do- ing before: join a club, adopt a new hobby, clean one's rooml Halloween is one of two high- lights of fall. People dress up and pretend they are someone else. lt is a time for enjoyment and silli- ness. People forget their troubles and stop being themselves for one crazy night. FF I 1 gm fi . .v.,., my H The stream started at the top of the mountain and slowly worked its way down. lt flowed smoothly and stead- ily passing tall evergreens which were dancing playfully in the bree e, lt passed a small clearing in the woods where a mountain goat quietly grazed on small blades of green grass. lt divided and traveled around a patch of delicate moss then came back together. The stream grew larger as it neared the bottom of the mountain. RIDI G CLUB nnmznqg EXCHANGE STUDENTS It's so hard for me to imagine that by the time everyone reads this I'lI be at the end of my stay in Japan. Right now it is winter here iust like home. I go to school six times a week. It takes me over one hour to get to school by bus. School is very difficult. I am taking Japanese. History, English. Math. Biology and Tea Ceremo- ny classes. I spend most of my time doing schoolwork. When I do go out to sightsee. visit friends or shop. I have to wear my school uniform. It's strange to wear the same outfit seven days a week, although it solves the problem of deciding what to wear. Life in Japan is much different than that of the U.S. Men rule everything. including the home. Children have no say in anything. Children always obey their parents. It was hard for me as an American to blindly follow orders but I soon adapted to the Japaneese way. My year has been challenging but aver all a wonderful experience and one I will always remember. Although our way of living is not very different from yours, there are some new things that I have experienced that I will never forget. Celebrating Halloween for example is a holiday I have never celebrated. as is Thanksgiving. Going to concerts at SPAC. tootsie rolls. watermelon bubblegum, and mint chocolate chip ice-cream were all firsts to me. My school at home is less than half the size of this,. We do not have the opportunity to make up our own schedules and we have to take I5 subjects. I have had just as much fun learning things in school as I have had meeting so many nice people here.
