The Creative Arts School has been designed for students with above average interest andfor ability in one or more of the areas of music, art, dance, theatre, and videofcin- ema. A very important aspect of the Creative Arts School is its homeroom. Another important part of the Creative Arts School is the opportunity it offers to explore the arts outside the class- room. Examples areg a music clinic with the Skip Parsons' Jazz Band. a trip to New York City to see the Metropolitan Museum, Evita and the New York City Opera, a pottery demonstration, and trips to Proctor's to see the American Ballet Theatre, and Williamstown, Mass. to visit the Clark Institute Art Museum. SAE was founded in 1972, and is one of the oldest alternative programs in the state and perhaps the country. SAE allows the members of the senior class to complete graduation requirements through com- munity experiences, independent study, specially designed SAE courses, regular high school courses, or college courses. Students are given the opportu- nity and the responsibility for creating their own academic programs based on their goals and needs. The community experience gives each student in SAE an opportunity to go out in the communi- ty. Students use the experience for career explora- tiong others take college courses to help them with the transition from high school to college, and still others volunteer as a community service. It has been a wonderful experience, though it's not all play and no work. Aside from a difficult language, I am attending a Danish high school, the Middelfart Gymna- sium Cthe Danes have a good sense of humorl, and I am taking no less than eleven courses. On the train ride there every day, all one sees are little old farms and churches, small towns, and rolling hills. It is a small land, only one-third the size of New York State, but is filled with many sights and a beautiful countryside. I live in the north- emmosf town of Denmark which is right. by the Mean, The school in Denmark is very different from Guilderland. You cannot make up your own sched- tile. and you have to take eleven subjects. Also, my school doesn't give me any credit for being here thfs vear. But I don't think I will ever regret that I came. Being an exchange student can be difficult. There's a lot of things you have to get used to: the language, food. attitudes. and also the different costumes. But with people like the students and teachers at Guil- derland High School, my two host families, the Cul- lens and the Costins. my year has been a great and exciting experience.
