I'm Peta Friedman, a Rotary Exchange student from Cape Town, South Africa, I'Ve been here since .lanurary 1975 and I'm having such a wonderful time. I think that Americans are such lovely. warm and open people. This kind of exchange program is a great oppor- tunity for spreading friendship and goodwill, and infor- mation about your country. Ive certainly had my fair share ol' peculiar questions! Do you live in a hut near thejunglc and Do you ride an elephant to school? The South Africa slang sure caused some embarrassment on my part. Once when I asked by host mother whether I could bunk tskipj school as I was tired, she thought I'd gone mad. When I -I told my host sister that she was loskop tabsent-mind- edt, she was convinced that I was being rude. I'd like to really thank all my friends, host families, and teachers who were so fantastic to me. If you ever come to Cape Town, please look me up and I'll be onlv gn too happy to show you my beautiful country. 5 i : - vu . WA W i M... ,J it I J, -A f ' ' 4' I I 2 i I N. lei- fi -, ,,,,. This past year I have stayed il usual for the Rotary Exchange program. This year, 1974, which I've spent in the Guilderland district lib rewarding experience of my life. The opportunity to meet and get even though there isn't such a great cultural difference I saw snow for the first time. I love to see it falling and on the trees, mud that follows. I love New York State in its variety and beautiful like the U.S.A., has a variety of landscape. During my stay here,I places with my families. Hopefully on my retum I will travel to see my own when you go to a new area and realize you should see as much as possible i a do you get to know an area. I've lived in a southem suburb on the bear my life and have seen very little, it might have taken me a life time. Now an urge to travel Also, during my year here I've attended both A.F.S. and Rotary uweekamhf' Exchange students from all around the Albany area have a chance to meet each Together as a large group we give talks and answer questions on our respective ei In this way it is not only a chance to meet others, but we learn of other COURUK, school benefits and everyone has a good time. Hopefully in the future Guilderllld host another weekend. I love Americans and America, I will never forget my year here. The people at GCEH and the surrounding community will always remain in my thoughts and have a spas! place in my heart. Nmda 5 . Hi, I'm Linda Stressel. For the past few months I have had the experience of living in Japan as a Rotary Exchange Student. Living among Japanese families has given me the opportunity to view Japan from the inside looking out. I have learned the marmerisms of the Japanese as a young child does - by accepting them as the proper way and putting them into practice. Also, attending a private all-girls high school here has given me an understanding of the Japanese educational system. In Japan, six years at primary school and three years at junior high school are compulsory. Senior High Schools are divided into two types - vocational schools, such as commercial or agricultural. and schools of general courses for thos who want to go on to a university. All senior high schools and some junior high schools have entrance examinations! I have found the Japanese to be friendly, warm-hearted. cheerful people. Through my friends and families, I have learned much about Japan. the United States. and myself. For instance, just as we Americans take our impression from the Japanese we meet in the U.S., so do the Japanese take their impression of Americans from the tourists and Ameri- can movies they come into contact with. This doesnt give us a very accurate understand- ing of each other's cultures and leaves a lot up to the imagination. Although customs and ways of showing our emotions may be very different. the people of our two countries are basically the same. We all want the same things out of life. such as happiness. friendship. and love. By accepting each other's cultures and mannerisms without questioning orjudg- ing them, we can achieve a much better understanding of each other. ...ff . M .f- M Exchange Students -F ' al.: ea Since the beginning of this school year. I have been here as the AIS Exchange Student from Germany. During the first five months of my stay in the LSA. my life has changed in a way l never would have expected. My family in Germany consists of my parents: 2 sisters, 20 and IT years olda 1 brotherg and myself. We live in a rather big city and all this is different from my new experiences. Here I live in a smaller community. Altamont. with a family of 3 children. ages 1-..3.and-I-4. Also. the school system is quite different from what I was used to in Germany. In Germany our high school is only one branch of the whole school system. After attending primary school for all kids for 4 years. we decide between elementary school for 5 years. middle school for 6 years. or high school for 9 years. depending on our grades and wishes for a profession. This means also that every branch has its fixed pro- grams of materials taught: we cannot choose our courses. While the German system is a more selective one, the American system aims more to equal rights in acquiring jobs. I expecially like this about Guilder- land where I can take a lot of courses. like Typewritf ing. Russian. or Computer Mathematics: I could not elect these courses in Germany. Some other not so obvious differences between people in Germany and America I experienced espe- cially during the Christmas season. People are very friendly and like to socialize. more so than in my country. They celebrate Christmas. for example, with a lot of parties and invite their friends to join them. In Germany. however. people are a little bit more reserved and tend to celebrate only in their own hmilies. At the American parties I found many nice lld open individuals who liked to meet people from breign countries. Besides these new impressions. I leamed a lot of lew things. such as how to ride a bike and that Amer- ita is a wide country with longer distances than I ever So. I can say that even after only half of my stay in this country. already I have a whole suit- ome of new impressions and ideas to carry back with Germany. Barbara Behr C' 5 I Q . - hun OF .pent last summer as an Open Door exchange student tbym, in Santiago, Chile. In thc taniily that llived with there f .,s N were my parents, the older liqg 7,33 brothers. and two sistcrs. -as Having a family of this size was a strange experience for me. Life is hard for most Chili- ans. though I never really fclt it. Inflation has been as high as 1200 percent and most of the prices were above what we pay. Because of the military government there was cur- few. and police could be found on nearly every corner. The school I attended was owned and operated by the French government. Many of the classes were taught in French. I was surprised to learn that many schools were taught in foreign languages such as English and German. My Chilian school was very small compared to GCHS. Each grade had about three classes. I took thirteen courses and the school day lasted from 8:30 to 4:15. Chile is a beautiful country, not only because of its geography but also because of its people. It has some of the most fascinating mountains. lakes, and volcanos in the world. Still, no one can compare with the people. They gave me the feeling that it was important to them whether or not I had a good time. Judy Humphrey BONJOLRY Greetings from Provence. the land of herbs. cyprus trees, and sunshine. I'm living in the country on the outskirts of a city called Aix-En-Provence. Originally. Aix was built by the Romans and one can still observe traces of ruins here and there. Aix is filled with fountains, narrow streets. and old buildings. Located not too far from my home are the stone quarries whose yellow bricks were used to build the houses of Aix. It's a beautiful city and I'm fortunate to be here. My home is a 300-year-old country house which overlooks Mont St. Vic- toire. A white, needle-pointed mountain. St. Victoire was beloved by the artist Paul Cezanne who frequently painted it. Although my house is large, it still isn't big enough for my rumbling, tumbling family of six children. two parents. two dogs and a cat. There is always some activity going on at the house. so I'm never bored Quite the contrary, I never have enough time to all ofthe things I would like to do. School lasts until five o'clock here in France. Thus, by the time one gets home, does his homework, and eats dinner, the day is over. Therefore, the weekend means so very much to the French students. My weekends are crammed with visits to other places. long walks in the country. etc. Being a foreign exchange student has opened up my eyes to the world. The motto of the American Field Service is Life Sharing, and. really. that's what my experience here in France is all about. Carol Iwas an Open Door Exchange Student in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil. during the summer of 1974. I lived with the Lombardi family. Fernanda Lombardi was an Exchange Student to Guilderland the previous winter. My family had two live-in maids and one who came once a week to do the laundry. It is luxiourious, but it also helps the Brazilian economy. There are many poor people in Brazil. All would be happy to live in a nice house and eat well in return for their services. I loved Rio very much. It is a beautiful city. lt has many beaches which are attended every day of the year. The beach is a relaxing place to talk to your friends, and body surf. School is very different. and I like our system better. GCHS is lenient in comparison. I leamed many things. mainly how friendly and warm people can be. especially to Americans. We are idols in their eyes. All Brazilians wish to go to America some day. I wish to retum to Brazil. Once you've been to Rio, you will always have a constant craving to return. I thank Miss Ryan, the Open Door Advisor at Guilderland, for helping to make it possible. Looby, Superintendent Of Schools ' Prospect And Retrospect Graduation is a time for graduates to think both retrospectively and prospectively - to draw from your past experiences useful lessons and insights, as well as to plant your feet firmly and focus your eyes clearly on the road ahead and the direction you will take. To each senior I would put three rhetorical, reflective questions about your school experiences: 1. Have you learned that you cannot rely solely on an institution alone, or on others who are in charge, to fully enrich your experiences and lead you to true personal fulfillment? You must be self- reliant! ' 2. Have you learned that it is not until you alone, all by yourself, create from your own time and sweat and tears a work you are proud of that you really come to know yourself and gauge your own potential? You must assume personal responsibility ! 3. Have you learned that good friends make life more interesting, and that you more easily find and make friends by participating in the activi- ties around you and by giving service to others? You need to function in a social setting - you must join and belong and participate. Looking ahead now, what are your prospects? You are at a point in life where you are loosening old roots - leaving high school, untying mother's apron strings, departing from close family association. What compass will you use now? What light or hand will guide you? How will you avert an interval of wandering and wasting? Your IDEALS - the principles you hold dearly, will help the most. Every problem you confront, every situa- tion you encounter, should be evaluated in termsof H own personal principles and ideals. Be carefd th! P ' are not robbed of your ideals by those around yea preach expedience, or that you do not abandon S yourself through weakness in time of temptatitm. Your INTERESTS will also help give you dirmtk. Remember, you do best what interests you mlm. Ya have already developed some interests. You must em- tinue to broaden and develop additional interests. Yu can build a life upon an interest, you can make a out of an interestg but especially you can find personal fulfillment through pursuit of avocational interests. Your FAMILY will always be a port in the storms of life, a source of support and comfort. Perhaps you have felt, on occasion, that Mom and Dad were not with it , that they simply did not understand you. Sometimes it seemed difficult to communicate with them. When you swim away from the family shores and look back on your parents from afar, I predict that, over the yearsg they will look wiser and wiser. After your parents have de parted this life, their values will remain ever in your memory, providing a bright and useful beacon as you search for right decisions among conflicting options. Perhaps when time and distance strengthens your ap- preciation of your parents and your brothers and sisters. you will renew and repair any relationships that may have frayed during the high school years. You will have many opportunities to say 'Thank you. My very best wishes to all the graduates. of whom the Superintendent, the School Board. and the Staff are very proud. Dr. Thomas F.
