The first answer that may come to your mind is graduation from senior high school. This in itself is noteworthy. However, millions of other high school students can claim the same distinction this year. The important thing is not that you graduate, but how? Did you develop an inquiring mind that will lead you to seek out the answers to problems? Did you learn how to use books, teachers, authorities, newspapers, magazines and personal observation in gaining answers to these problems? Did you learn to plan your work so that you could complete term projects and yet have time left for the dance, of chess club, or basketball game? Did you learn how to work with people? Did you learn your responsibilities as a member in a democratic society? Did you learn the importance of a sound and healthy rnind and body? Did you find what you thought was your level of performance and then work just a little harder? Did you learn how to convey ideas by both written and oral expression 7 If you can honestly answer Yes to these eight questions, you have achieved much more than graduation from high school. You have built a firm foundation for your future. In this age of rapid change, new discoveries may make today's facts untrue. We cannot foresee the world you will live in during the next fifty years. We know it will be different. We hope we have prepared you to face the differences you will encounter. We hope we have helped your future by adequately preparing you for the years that lie ahead. 8. i 9 uirlance Qffice V 4 I 6 U T I ' ,,.. 9 . The months went by so very fast, We wish that they could last and last We read the paper and the latest news, Which gave us gossip and sincere views. We were always late to class, It's a wonder that we ever passed! The only thing that troubled us, Was staying for the late, late bus. The Senior Prom was a touch of art, It captured each and every heart. Graduation harbored untold pleasures. This was a portion of wonderous treasures Remember the hours filled with laughter, The many things we'l1 recall thereafter? Although we'll go our separate ways, We're bound to meet in future days. And, so it is we all must part, Severed in hand but not in heart. By Judith Van Zandt Class of 1960 'Si 'nag 'k '-11 --- .. lc- ,fi-Q, l all T few Q W Wi? i ...si a:'v'. This village is so small that you will probably not find it on the map, but it lies between two tovsms, Gjovik and Lillehammer. I belong to what I will call an average Norwegian family. There are four of us, my mother, my father, my sister, and myself. My sister and I go to school in Sjovik, the nearest town. It is not a very large school. There are only 700 students. I find that the churches and schools here in the United States differ greatly from those in Norway. We do not go to high school before we have passed through seven years of elementary school. In our highschool wehave no opportunity to choose what subjects we want to take. Everybody has to take the same courses. Another difference is that we g0 to school six days a week with one Monday each month off from school. I think that we have about the same number of hours at school as you. In my opinion high school in Norway is more difficult than here. A Norwegian student has to take more foreign languages and math as compared to an American student. I have for instance taken six years of German, two years of math. The church life is the second thing I have found so entirely different. In my country we have a state church which is Lutheran. Here the religion is more a part of the daily life than it is in Norway. The church service is also much more informal here. One of the things I like the best in America is the food. The chief reason is that my mother, Mrs. Butler, is such an excellent cook. What I am not particularly fond of here are the Bermuda shorts. They are not, in my opinion, attractive. Bicycles seem to be used rather little here as compared to Norway. If they go shopping, go to movies, or want to go somewhere else, the Norwegians, both old and young, use their bicycles. Among Norwegian kids, bicycle trips are very popular, even to. foreign countries. Ihave myselfbeen riding in Denmark and Sweden. When I return to Norway, I have one year left in high high school. Afterward it is my plan to go to the University of Oslo to study languages. In its attempt to make people from different countries understand each other better, I think that the American Field Service program has a great mission, and I am very thankful that I have this wonderful chance. Ambass ado rs JOYC E SMO LENS June 18, 1959 -- What a day! The S.S. Zuidercruis sailed away from New York with its eight hundred passengers waving excitedly, each straining his eyes for a last glimpse of family and friends. It hardly seemed possible that the day had arrived and I was actually on my way, but as we came to deeper water my stomach reminded me of the fact with every roll of the ship. During the first two days, most of us spent our spare time by the rail wondering if the rest of our voyage would make us 'as miserable as the beginning had, but we had no need to worry. The seasickness was only temporary, and it wasn't long before we could really start enjoying the trip. On the third day out, when my stomach had settled down,I began to have fun which was to continue throughout the summer. I don't know exactly what I was expecting of Holland and my Dutch families, but I certainly never dreamed they'd be as wonder- ful as they were. When we arrived at Rotterdam I found my Dutch sister waiting for me. We went directly to the Hague where my family lived, and I met my parents, brother, and little sister. These people were so kind and understanding that it took me only one day beforel really felt like a member of the family. I came to love them very much, and it was very hard to leave them when my month's stay was over. My second home was the small town of Oaster-Nljkerk in the north of Holland. Although it was difficult for me to leave my family in the city and make a brand new start, I soon found it worth it. I became acquainted with another type of living, I met many new pgeople, and best of all I then belonged to two Dutch families instead o one. Although my second family was quite different from my first, I again adjusted quickly, because oftheir warmth and understanding. Neither my mother nor my father in this family spoke English, but my sister translated for us. We soon discovered that language doesn't present as big a barrier as one might expect. By the end of August, my relationship with this family was as close as it had been with the other. Leaving Holland was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do, and judging from all the tears that were shed as our ship sailed from Rotterdam, my fellow exchange students felt the same as I did. We were filled with a new kind of spirit, though, which mixed joy with our sadness, and we said good-bye to Holland with shouts of A.F.S., A.F.S. -- American Field Service -- an Organization which had come to mean a great deal to us all. Yes, it was actually a unique season, except Guilderland had difficulty finding mid-season victories. Perhaps the greatest moment during the season was when Chet came off the bench at Colonie with less than a few moments left and five points to Score, but he came through with a 54-46 victory, or maybe Craig Farnsworth's seven consecutive foul shots against Mohanasen earning G.C.H.S, a 57-39 victory, Tl? ffl ? mf'-' 'Jr' -1 '- ,- -w WL 5 E 1 I X Q -1.
