'lo fa-1-I ll!lXX'l'Vl'I', llml we 5 1 i 3 i tl i Principcl's Message New fields of adventure will open to high school graduates this year. Many will go on to college to prepare for careers in a space age. Others will begin jobs in industries now plan- ning space-bound equipment. Still other gradu- ates will be supplying the clerical and secretarial aid necessary to support space age enterprises. Unexplored space is waiting for you on this earth also. You have learned your first lessons well. You know the alphabet of life. Now you must learn to build your own words, sentences and paragraphs. The meaning of your life must become known to you. Only you can find this meaning. We have given you the fundamentals for your exploration into yourself. Now you must decide what it all means. Unexpired areas in human relations will provide a challenge for many of you, for though man has entered space, he cannot get along peaceably with those close to him. War and the threat of war consumes billions of dollars of the earth's wealth each year. Carelessness and neglect take an overwhelming toll of the world's productive capacity. New areas of human under- standing must he developed. This year's gradu- ates may he able to teach people how to get along with one another. New space to explore, new fields to con- quer, new challenges to respond to and new horizons to reach for are yours as you face a new phase of your life. Some of you have achieved outstanding results in your four years at Guilder- land Central lligh School. To you we offer our congratulations and our sincere wish that you continue to excell in your new tasks. To those who have not achieved as they would have liked to, other chances will be given, for life continu- ously presents opportunities for a new start. Your diploma signifies that you have success- fully reaehed one plateau in your life. You have climbed high enough so that your vision from this plateau will show you where you have been. You now have an opportunity to look hack and evaluate what you have done to arrive here. Your vantage point can also give you a hetter view of thc road ahead. The future is yours. We hope you make the most of it. 65 ,l+l'illilWlM' qu Ui' IW!! ,L IW ll X M IUIIEM i. 4 V -7. l ? ? if li .ZX ' . i Q 1 12+ X .39- ' X G --1' '14 S x. e-' v., 2' K , ff 1. - nb!-Vi Q- .1 ..- Q ,I V K SN X -r 'zxxi' A , xl' U' Hi . 'JN- il 1 l Inge Lise Nellsen by Gail Strom I Cuilderland is one of many schools in the United States which participates in the American Field Service Student Exchange Program. This program is designed to acquaint students with the lives and customs of people in other lands, thus promoting international understanding and good will. This year the exchange student, Inge-Lise Neilsen, is from Denmark. The sto? of how she was chosen to come to the Unite States is an interesting one: In Denmark students are acquainted with the A. F. S. program through the newspapers. Those who are interested send an application to the headquarters in Copenhagen. Students then receive a number of papers which must be filled out. This year, 800 applied and 100 were chosen in a screening of t e applications. The final 100 were uestioned carefully to learn their knowledge 0? history and the English language, in arivate interviews. Inge was chosen as one of time 56 students from Denmark to go to the U. S. A. V The students from Denmark met at Copen- hagen August fifth, where they joined the pu ils from Scandinavia. The group then proceeded to Holland by train. Some of them went to the U. S. by plane but a great number, including Inge. started on the ocean voyage on the shi Arosa Sky. There were more than enou aetivities to keci the students busy on board. in addition to tiie different groups for scouts, dancers, painters, etc. there NVZIS a swimming pool, a tennis Court, and a beauty parlor. Every night there was a dance. Durin the day stu- dents would gather in groups and discuss with A. F. S. oilieers, life in America. Many questions on Ameriean schools and teenagers were brought up and answered. During the course Of the voyage 200 of the 876 aboard were taken ill with the Asiatic ilu. One student, a boy from Creeeo, died. After being detained in the New York harbor for over a week, the ship docked and the anxious students tried to hurry through cus- toms-an impossible feat as the later found out. The grou 1 stayed for several dlays at the Hotel New Yorker and then headed each toward his different destination. Inge arrived in Albany to live with joan Clark on August 15. A pm! from Nm lmrlmr I W 4 i hu-g.,-.-. --Qg -f.. -Y Typical Danish farm. him' - 1.',? ' In an interview with Inge she explained that Danish schools are quite different from those in the United States. Students in Den- mark must attend school six days a week for six hours each day. They take 16 different subjects each year. These subjects include, Danish liter- ature, Danish composition, German, En lish literature, English composition, geography, llliol- physics, arithmetic, math, sewing, cooking, drawing, painting and gym. Danish students wear whatever they like to school-the girls wear slacks. When school is dismissed the students have nothing more to do with school until the next day. There are no clubs or activities associated with the school. There are in each city, however, places where girls can go to learn sewing and boys, woodworking after school. There is a Y. VV. C. A. fellowship meeting each week. lt there is nothing else to do Danes go to the movies, go bicycling, swimming, ice skating or they listen to the radio. People in Den- mark read much more than do the Americans. During lngels first week or two in America she was amazed by many things. VVhen teen- agers told her to eat corn on the cob she thought it was a joke. And who ever heard of eating raw vegetables? Carrots, celery, lettuec-every- thing is cooked in Denmark. When asked her Hrst impression of rock 'n roll Inge said, I thought it was crazy! Her opinions on many new attractions have been altered in the past year. Inge was both surprised and pleased to see the many tonveniences we have in school. There are no cafeterias, gyms, or home economics rooms in the average Danish High school-in fact there are not even refrigerators in the kitchens. lllge was uite impressed with the large buildings and gkyscrapers in New York Citv. Students from all over the Uniticl States met and stayed at the XVindsor Hotel, there. At 151230 A,M, the ncxt day, Ron and two friends he had met from Errzas went down to the boat. The Arosa Kulm sailed for Holla. al at 2:01 P. M. Tlicrc were 750 students aboard the ship. Erich day tlicrc were language classes, panel discussions, club-. movies, and danccs. XVhcn twelve days had passed the ship triveflin liottcrdam, llolland. july second the students who were to live in Germany took a train to Dusseldorf where they spent the night. Latcr Ron went on to Karlsruhe to live with the Kohler family. Ron fclt quite at home with his three brothers, Ceroltl, IS. Wolfgang, 14, and Landolt, 11. Mr. Kohler is a teacherof history so lion went to school with the Germans for several wccks at the beginning of his stay. He attended classes in linglisli, Cit. lid., math, and Latin. Tlicrc wcrc thrcc other American boys living near Karlsruhe. lion and tlicsc boys often went sight seeing together. A favorite pastimc of thcirs was visiting the army P-X near-by. On the basc tlicy could buy various articles or attend the movies. The boys discovcrcd that the main part of Karlsruhe had been greatly damagcd by the bombs during WVorld War Il. There WHS 3 vacant lot cvcry seven or eight houses. The town WHS, lm suuuncr, being rapidly rebuilt. Karlsruhe is a unique city in that it is built around a castle, thc ccntcr of attraction for tourists. All roads lead from the castlc making a fan arrangement. lt is therefore called Die lfaclicrstadt -the fan city. Ron and his German brothers oftcn took bicycle trips since bicycling is the main meillfldflf transportation in Germany. At one time during his stay in Karlsruhe, Ron went on a bus trip through the Black Forest to Baden - Baden. This town is several miles from a resort Wheff Chancellor Adenaeur spends his vacations. American House in Hiedelberg Hicclcllzcrg and Nggkgf Bismarck Plaza, Ilicrlnllmrg Main Corner in llirfrlfrllnerg At the end of july Ron went to the town of Sehrieshiem just outside the city of Heidelberg. lflere he spent the rest of the summer with the Scharf family. In this family there were two girls and two boys ranging in age from 15 to 21. VVhile in Schrieshiem Ron went on a three day bicycle trip with two of his friends. They traveled along the Neelcer River and spent their nights at youth hostels. Students can sleep at these hostels for fifteen cents a night. One night the beds were quite uncom- fortable so the boys dropped down to a haystack below their window and slept there for the night. They toured the Black Forest and returned home several days later. During the third week in August there was a grand castle lightingf' The castle, which is on a hill, overlooks the Neclcer River. Every year the people shoot fireworks and pinwheels. This celebration is a great event in lleidelberg and is an outstanding source of attraction for tourists. ln the last part of August lion left lleidelberg for Bremen. At Bremen the 250 students who had been living in Cerinany met and stayed at a refugee camp near the town. VVhile in Bremen the American students were invited to a dinner at the City hall. There was a special dish prepared just for the students as they were the guests of honor. On August 31 the students took a train to llreinerhaveu where they boarded a boat on the English Channel. After two days on the Channel the boat picked up the remaining Aineriean students at ltotterdain and the Arosa Kuhn began its ten day journey to Canada. The ship docked at Quebec Monday, September ninth. The group then split up and lton, with some of his friends, went to Montreal where he waited for the bus which was to bring him back to Albany. Ron brought with him several souvenirs from Germany. The Cerman people specialize in leather and steel goods and make them of a superior quality. Ed Sill, sophomore student who is radually re- covering from a lencgthy illness, has retumed to C.C.II.S. to continue his stu ies. The Tawasenthan takes pleas- ure in welcoming him back to the student body. On October 20, 1956, Ed was stricken by a disabling disease, paralytic polio. News of his misfortune caused concem for him throughout the school. During his five-month stay at the hospital lid re- ceived daily treatments. A warm bath designed to al- leviate pain and loosen the muscles was followed by stretching of leg muscles. In paralytic polio the area stricken is almost entirely mechanically destroyed, so different muscles never used before must be developed. This developing process or procedure takes much time. As soon as he was strong enough, Ed began taking exercises to accomplish his goal-that of walking a fain. Together with braces and the parallel bars he gainefl his sense of balance through hours of effort. Ed usually spent his time watching television or writing letters. Then during visiting hours, seven to eight, many of his friends came to visit him. On certain days the patients were allowed to have visitors from two to four o'clock in the afternoon. lid greatly enjoyed the portable television set given to him by his classmates. For a half year, Ed went to the hospital school in Schenectady. Every morning the nurses would wheel his bed to the school room . There the students were taught by one teacher who had had to instruct 20 dif- ferent subjects. Ed took biology, English, social studies and algebra. The only subject omitted from his regular curriculum was Spanish-the teacher didn't teach lan- guages. There was one pertinent comment which lid had on the subject of attending this school. llcfore he had started classes, there had been only a half-day of school. Shortly after he joined the classes a full-day schedule was bcfun. lid didn't think that was very nice . lt seemeda as if the hospital had extended the school day just for him. During the Christinas holidays many parties were held at the hospital. Several bands came and played for the patients. The highlight of the festivities was a demonstration and party given by the firemen from Schenectady. They brought their equipment, including fire trucks, to the hospital and showed the younger children especially, a good time. An additional novelty for the patients was a monthly visit by a group of barbers. Each month the barbers Came to the hospital and gave the boys liaircuts. Pie- tures which were taken were used for publicity by these barbers. Early in March. Ed was permitted to go home. lle has returned to the hospital several times a week since then for additional exercise and observation. Lately, Ed can be found at the canteen Friday nights. He goes out with his friends and does almost everything now . Ed's favorite pastime is that of help- ing his buddies work on their cars. l ' 1 I : ,, itttlt lf tt llsf x 55 ll' It ta. vu- 1. 1 O 0 . Teaching a new crop of players the fundament- als of the game, he molded a quintet which finished above the .500 percentage in games won and lost.
